Default Anyone here USING 3rd gens?

So are you buying, collecting and talking 3rd gen pistols or are you using them? I was struck by two thoughts this past week. A friend posted on another board that I carried and used 3rd gens daily - which is true and an old fella wandered into the shop I work part-time in looking for a new holster for his carry gun - a pristine 4563TSW. Which he purchased new and has carried in the fall/winter for twenty years.

Those two things made me wonder, are there others here who use these guns daily? Or are your 3rd gens more for occasional range use or collecting?

I continue to use them daily, for serious purpose, for a few reasons. One, they are what I shoot best. I can get "A" hits out to 25 yards with the ones I carry. Fast. And I am able to shoot DA/SA as well as anything else because I came up shooting revolvers and I practice regularly. While I no longer shoot as much as I have in the past, being semi retired, I still shoot 200 to 300 rounds a month. More if I am testing customers guns or giving a lesson.

But other than myself, I don't know anyone who uses these fine pistols regularly. The three folks I know who are S&W fans, all carry either HK, Sigs or Glocks. Two of those folks are collectors, the third is just too lazy to practice and prefers a light weight plastic gun to carry. To each his own.

I prefer a solid platform to shoot 45s from. The 45 being my preferred round for miscreant control. Reliability is my chief concern - and these guns are bet your life reliable. Weight is not a concern, to me. Because I own a gunbelt and good holster and my loaded 4506-1 weighs within an ounce of the vaunted 1911. Which I hear is the gun of choice for "professionals".

And often I carry an aluminum framed version, the CS45, 457 or 4513. All use the same manual of arms. Controls are the same or similar. And all are minute of felon accurate.

So I am curious. Anyone else here using these fine guns daily? Occasionally? Or just buying/collecting? Thanks! Regards 18DAI

Yes indeed. My constant companion lately has been a late model 6906. It was a more difficult pistol to learn how to shoot well, but well worth the effort. Great balance between concealability, weight, and capacity. I'm actually very interested in a 4513 or a 4506 to add to my rotation but finding holsters for these guns is sometimes challenging.

Yes I am carrying a M4040PD right now. I added a set of XS Standard Dot night sights and it shoots lights out. I love it so much, itís actually my favorite carry pistol ever. I also do like my Kahr PM9 for 9mm carry, since itís so small and light. But it also has a DA trigger. I wouldnít carry a SA gun or Glock-style SA striker gun

Holsters can be problematic. I have an additional problem when holster shopping - I am left handed!

I have found that holsters for a Sig 220/226 work well for the 4566. Sig 229 holsters work with the compacts - 4516/4513. Glock 30 holsters work with the 457. And some Glock 27 holsters work with the CS45. A kind member here made my a very nice IWB for my CS45, so that one is covered.

The 4506 holsters are the hardest to find. I have had MTR Custom leather make me a few holsters over the years. Nice product that they are very proud of.

Murphs Cutom leather is a fine holster maker. He does the local gunshows and makes superior leather at a reasonable price. I used one of his holsters on duty for 15 years and still use it. Very durable and well made.

Non fitted holsters for a Beretta 92 sometimes work for the 4506. And Alphonsos leather in Hollywood CA still makes 4506 holsters. LAPD guys put me on to them. They have both duty and off duty leather.

Aker is another good holster maker for 3rd gen guns. But I don't think the currently offer one for the 4506. Ebay often has some old new stock Aker holsters. I use their Flatsider pancake with my 4506. Great leather to conceal a fairly large gun with. Regards 18DAI

Sure; I've been carrying the same 39xx,69xx and Performance Center Shorty-9 since the early 1990s.................a 3913NL is my EDC here in the Burbs of the Burgh....... I tend to go to a 6906 when I'm going out of town.

I accumulated my carry guns, back-ups and back-ups to the back-ups in the safe over the past 25-30 years.......

Holsters..... custom from Milt Sparks, MTR and Kirkpatrick out of Texas.

Currently looking to get a IWB holster for my newest carry a Squidsix custom 6915. Anyone with one in their Big Box-O-Holsters they want to sell drop me a PM...... before I call M Sparks next week.

My only S&W .45 is a 4566..... to meet my .45 carry needs I switched to a Sig 245 in about 1994/95

Another old gun seeing more use lately is a Beretta 92F Compact with "thin" G-10 grips, night sights and the new Mec-gar 15 rd flush fit magazines.

My carry revolvers also date to the 1980s three inch 65s and 66s.

As I've posted before..."new is new.... new doesn't mean better... just different". Experimented with different carry guns for about about a dozen years 1978 to 1990. Since then never seen a reason to change.

Carrying? No. For me, carrying is all about weight and size and metal guns are just heavier. I carry a Ruger LC9S or a Shield. Ruger is slightly smaller and lighter so Shield doesnít get carried much. Every ounce matters so Iím considering a SIG 365MS.

But my home defense gun is a 5903. Everything I like in a non carry gun.

Strongly agree BAM-BAM! I examine all the "new" latest and greatest every week at the gunshop. Absolutely no interest in any of them.

Ugly designs with lousy triggers and exhorbitant price tags. I see absolutely no reason to change. Regards 18DAI

Range use mainly. Unfortunately, for the calibers i like to carry, no 3rd Gens have the round capacity i prefer.
For carry i use a Glo** 29SF that holds 16 rounds of 10mm.

I carry mine frequently, it has seen all kind of use from hiking, hunting, kayaking, traveling, daily outings, and two trips across the entire continental U.S. and back in a car. Itís not the only gun I carry, but it is one I use regularly. It is large, but open carry is legal in my state and most of the ones around me, so I wear it proudly if the situation allows.

For holsters, Iíve found success with leather holsters made for the Glock 19. They start off a tad small, but if you dampen them up and stuff a third gen (in a bag, of course) in it overnight, by morning itís usually a perfect custom fit.

All I use are generation three S & W pistols, and revolvers. I have carried a CS 45 for over 20 years. I keep a 4513TSW by the bed, and a 4506 with only 50 rounds through it, in the safe. It was my last duty pistol. I do not like striker fired pistols. I require a safety even though I only use it for de-cock. I never carry with the safety on. I love these handguns. The absolute last revolver I would ever sell, the ever versatile, Model 63.

My 4006 TSW is mainly a range gun right now, but as soon as I can find a good holster for it I will be carrying it in rotation along with my CZ P-07(it is also 40 S&W)

Week days I carry my .40 shield or my .38 model 640 no dash, as I can conceal those best while at the office. On the weekends, or on my day off, as I drive my wife or daughters to the store, I carry my 457 or 6904, as the cold weather allows me to conceal them with heavier coats. Also, if I had the 457 at the range that week, I will be more apt to carry it all weekend. Next week I may take the 6904 to the range, so I will carry that for running errands that weekend.

I have tried at times my 5904, 5903tsw 5906 tsw, and even my 686 a couple times. i always went back to my 4506 no dash IWB.I dont know, but i guess it is the slimmer width. So it has been clear after all these years, no more efforts to try to use something else..Why improve on the best choice anyway?

I would really like to say I do carry one of my S&W 3rd Gens daily, but I donít anymore. Sometimes but not daily.

Iíve went from the whole progression of 4506, 4516, 4513, CS45 because I started wanting smaller/lighter, (the same with SOME 9mmís too.) I keep getting ďnewĒ examples that I think Iím going to carry but I donít for various reasons and excuses. Mostly the condition of them.

I shoot them all and take great care of them, but as theyíve multiplied Iíve realized Im actually creating more of a reference library than a collection. Iím starting to appreciate them for more than just ďtools.Ē

I hate to admit it here but my daily carry is one of my PM series Kahrís, (.380, 9ís, or .45.) Iíve had them for years and am very confident in them. The plus thing too is if something DOES happen, I would not be amiss if one of them were locked up for ďevidence.Ē I would be very bummed if my Shorty 45 MKII was thrown in a metal cage. (Yep I know, NOT a 3rd Gen but..)

My EDC is Tupperware but I end up with the S&W 469 on me more often. It is of course a 2nd Gen and not a 3rd Gen.

When it comes to a high round count and piling up scorched brass, it tends to be from my S&W guns much more than all the others I own combined.

My Brinks 4046 is tucked into my everyday easy chair right next to me. Hopefully I will never REALLY use it. It is also my carry gun on my property.

To expand on my earlier post. The CS9 is what I carry when I don't want to hang a gun on my belt. Since I worked four days this week, I was using it so I could put it in my gun vault before I get out of the truck at a client. I was just lazy this morning.

My go to belt gun is the pre rail 3913TSW.

The truth is, in my state if "something happens" I can likely kiss my guns goodbye. All of them. So there is no benefit to carrying a cheaper plastic gun.

OTOH, if I go out of state, I'll often bring my Sprinfield XDE in 9mm. If something happens there, it might come back to haunt me in MA, but maybe not since the laws are different in the southern states where I try to spend my vacation time.

The XDE is much like a 3913, so it's not hard to adjust to carrying or shooting.

Once in a while, I'll carry one of my 457s at home.

For holsters I've been mostly using FIST IWB leather holsters, but my 457s ride in Fist Kydex holsters and I'm thinking of getting one for my 3913TSW as well. The leather just doesn't hold it's shape as well and makes reholstering a bit of chore.

I'm twiddling with a 3913 grip on my CS9.

The cutting/grinding is pretty much done.
If I can incorporate a pocket-clip on the
right grip panel, and make the safety lever
a bit more belly-friendly, it may well become
the daily carry.

I admit that I am stuck in the twentieth century, a brand loyalist, and an S&W Gen3 fan-boy. I am buying, collecting, and using S&W Gen3s. I mostly use a 3953 or 4053 for EDC.

My CS40 and 69XXs get some time out of the safe, but I favor the single stack DAOs for EDC. I feel more comfortable with the DAOs in a crisis situation because I carried revolvers for 33 years on the job and my training and muscle memory favors this KISS option.

I have accumulated quite a few Gen3 9s and 40s in the last few years. I'd need to buy an additional safe if I started buying 45s. I currently own only one plastic, striker-fired gun - a Walther PPS40 which is my only non-Smith and it sees duty on those rare occasions I wear a blazer or suit.

My wife complained that I need a 12-Step group so I slowed my buying to four guns in 2019 - all Gen3s. My last purchase, a nice 3953TSW pre-rail, was picked up from my FFL on New Year's Eve Day.

A nice way to end the year.

Not everyday, but I do have a 4516, a 4040, and a CS40/10 in somewhat frequent rotation with my P239. I’ve got a Milt Sparks VMII for the P239 and it works pretty well for the others too.

I carried a 3913 as my ccw, and a 59 when I wanted a higher capacity gun, until about 3 years ago. I never cared for Glock’s or the M&P 1.0’s, so I never bothered to upgrade until the 2.0’s came out. I am a huge fan of the 2.0’s, and carry those almost exclusively. The only time I carry a 3rd gen anymore is when I get a hankering to carry a .45.

Around the place I generally carry a revolver, I like having some snake shot mixed in the cylinder, but off the place I pack my 6906 in a lined Bianchi #19? or a Gordon Davis rig.
Im a 9mm guy and I tried carrying a 5906 P/C but it was a tad heavy and really wasn't any advantage in accuracy over the Shorty 9 , so just added the extension and modified the grips to have 16 rds in my 6906. Been carrying it over 20 years and it shows, HA.

My carry gun has gone from a 6906 to a P320 Compact. It may change back, we will see.

S&W 3rd Gens are all that I use, whether for carry or as a nightstand gun. The whole reason I started collecting them was for CC due to the manual of arms, safety of operation, and reliability. The fact that they are also usually very affordable on the used market and just plain fun to learn about and collect simply adds to the experience!

I have a nicely-used 3913TSW with the rail removed that has been in my holster more often than not lately, though in the Summer I will rotate between a 3913TSW pre-rail and my CS9. Others that get into the rotation during the colder months include a late-production 457, 6904 Long Slide, 915, 4040PD, and occasionally a 4566TSW. My nightstand gun is generally a 5906TSW with a bobbed hammer, 20-round mag, and a Streamlight TLR-1.

I wound up making some leather IWB holsters, one that fits all of my 39xx guns as well as my 4040PD, and another that's specifically made for my CS9. OWB holsters are generally old-stock DeSantis models that I've sniped off of eBay over the years, specifically made for S&W 3rd Gens and found at very nice prices.

I have a 6904 that I carried for a few years during flannel shirt weather. I purchased a M&P 2.0 C and switched to that. I am back to a DA/SA CZ75D PCR which has far better ergonomics than the third generation Smiths.

Well, at the risk of disappointing any of my valued, fellow Third-Gen aficionados here, I'll be up front and say that I don't carry one or regularly shoot one as so many of you do.

I do, however, always carry them to the range when I go (which is not as often as I'd like), and my round of choice is "God's caliber." It's what is loaded in my HD gun -- the WVSP 4566TSW I found recently -- that makes me feel well-protected in my castle and don't hesitate to bring along if I'm traveling.

What I have with me every day is a Kimber Micro-9, primarily for its size, weight, and acceptable capacity given the largely non-threatening environments I frequent.

Of course, in my heart of hearts, I'm an S&W guy all day long.

I prefer DA/SA pistols for SD and HD and local competition; and have a nice assortment of CZ's and SIG's, most with RDS. However, it's been difficult to find a good 'pocket-sized' DA/SA for hot summer carry (which is pretty much year-round in FL) so I settled for a DAO SIG 290rs. Then I recently re-discovered the CS9 which is among the ONLY DA/SA that at 22oz is still quite pocket-able. Wish there were better sights available but just added Novak's FO front, thin modified 3913 grips (thanks TercGen!) and a few spare mags and wear parts (thanks Midway!). I think it will be replacing the SIG.

I'm a big fan of the 3rd Gen. Smiths, currently owning a 4506 and a 4566 and always on the look out for more. I love them, but I don't carry them for only one reason: lack of support. I'm a high volume shooter compared to most and I give my carry guns a work out. While I have managed to accumulate a decent cash of spare parts and magazines, if I crack a frame or blow a barrel the guns are paperweights. Consequently, my 3rd Gens are occasional shooters. I've owned the 4506 for about two years and it's seen about two/three thousand rounds, give or take. At that rate it should outlast me. However, run it as hard as my usual carry gun and sooner or later I'm going to be faced with a problem that may not be fixable. It's a shame since I love them, but the lack of steady product support is a deal breaker for me.

I like the CZ autos..... but only have a 75B and a Kadet (.22)

If I hadn't been so heavily invested in 3rd gen Smiths by the time CZ became
readily available in alloy and Compacts......I'd probably have more CZs.

Love their Rifles.......17 22lr and .22 mag to 5.56.... wonderful mini Mauser's.... with Full/mannlicher stocks

Just got back from the range where I test drove Mark's newly cobbled up '1014'. On my belt rides my tuned up 4506 in a Kramer #2. I find myself carrying the 4506 more than anything else lately. I'm not particularly bothered by the weight, in fact it's a non-issue and it has a wonderful trigger, supremely accurate and will plop those fat bullets one after another in the same ragged hole with boring regularity so long as I do my part.

Other than a 4506, I occasionally hang my own '1014' on the belt or my SFF mk2 and every once in a while my CS9. Frankly speaking, for me, the 4506 is just more comfortable to carry than the smaller guns. I think that comfort has something to do with the larger holster spreading out the pressure over a wider area of my hip.

So yeah, anyway, 3rg gen every day all day and those are the only guns I carry and trust. Besides, plastic striker guns give me a rash

Cheers
Bill

Well as of today I finally mustered up the courage to pull out my 1013, she rides in a Milt sparks summer special straight drop, kinda forgot it was there... after some successful draw n'fire drills I'm pretty good with her DS/SA, she will become part of the rotation from now on and being decocker only she perfect...

I sunk so much into her I was a bit standoffish at first

BMCM I have been carrying my 4506-1 almost everyday too. We have had a rash of robberies lately, locally. Targeting gunshops. Some "agency folks" came by and briefed us on the probable cause and shared that they thought an escalation into daylight take over robberies might be possible/probable.

So, my 4506-1 has been on my hip since, when I am at the shop. Carried in a Don Hume JIT slide. A very comfortable way to conceal and carry a full size gun. But the 12 guage under the counter will be my 1st choice.

I took my 4506-1 to the range today. Another flawless 275 rounds. Shooting a full size all steel pistol, after a few months of shooting light weight compacts and sub compacts is a joy! "A" hits out to 20 yards are effortless. "Head shots" on a 3 inch Shoot-N-Cee reactive target are relatively simple, compared to having to work at the basics shooting the smaller guns. The big stable platform makes accurate shooting.......easy.

Of course the Trijicon front sight and blacked out Novak rear help too.

I would not leave a 4506 in the safe over concerns about breakage. There use to be a fella here named Dennis, who had over 28K through his 4506 no dash. He never broke anything. And one of the gunrags, back in the day, did a "torture test" on a 1006 and a 4506-1. 5K rounds, IIRC with no cleaning shot in one sitting. If memory serves, the 1006 broke the tip off the ejector - but still functioned and completed the test. The 4506-1 broke nothing. Spare parts, should they be needed are readily available, online.

Don't worry. Shoot and enjoy them. I have never heard of a 4506-1 breaking a frame. Maybe my friend CALREB, who saw and serviced far more 4506s than I could share his experiences.

vigil617 I am green with envy at that WVSP 4566TSW! Regards 18DAI

I’m in NJ and a professional nerd, so no ccw or hard duty carry for me. My PPQ lives in the pistol vault next to my bed. My 3rd gens are for killing paper only, although I’m sure my 5906tsw, 4006tsw, CS9, or even my 39-2 would be capable in those roles.

I carry my 4014 on the weekends when I know I won't have to holster/reholster a lot. On the weekdays, I have to unholster to drop kids off at school or when I go to work, so I normally carry a sig p290rs or a s&w bodyguard 380 in my pocket.

Only one I own is a 4596 and it is the home defense gun. My daily carry is a 442 but the 4596 would be a woods carry for sure.

I did carry the CS9 and CS45 for over 15 years and still sometimes do, but have primarily switched to a Model 340 PD. But some of my third gens make every range trip.

1076 is one of my favorite hand guns of all time, although I rarely carry it anymore. I do carry my BMCM 4053 10mm quite a bit. It's so perfect. Need a 1086 to go with it.

CCW :
1. Model 6906
2. Model 4006
3. Model 457
4. Model 645
I carry the Model 457 more than the other three as it feels "Just Right"

I carry my 6906 a lot. It has been modified by Teddy Jacobson (Actions by T) and I have 7 mags with spare new springs and followers for the mags. I usually carry this gun whenever I wear gym shorts or sweat pants because I have a fanny pack(don't laugh) holster that fits it perfectly. I like how it fits my hand and how it shoots and the weight doesn't bother me.

Some people say that they would carry a 3rd gem, yet the possibility of the pistol ending up into the evidence locker stops them from doing so. I understand their point. But i disagree in the major degree. Here is why. I cc for one reason and one reason only, and that is in case someone wants to harm me, I may have a fighting chance against them. If (God forbid,) this moment ever arrises, where I will run out of options, and will be forced to gun down another human being, then I want to have by my side the best there is. And no my friends, plastic toys that cost 50 cents to manufacture but cost actual pistol prices to buy, are not the best there is. (Regardless manufacturer) 3rd gems were preety much the last human succesfull effort to mass produce a beyond well made semiautomatic series of pistols, and that was a third century ago. Since then, the "lowest bidder" has been the name of the game. Therefore, I will stick to the pistols that have been feeding empty cases as a true statement of reliability, and I will not sucumb to what Hollywood projects as cool and must have equipment. I am not 25 anymore. I know better. So, If I end up allive after a posiible shootout, the pistol has performed its duty, and I am greateful. Farewell to it, and off to get an identical one asap for replacement. If not, then the evidence locker will not be a concern for me anymore. Just my two cents.

I agree worrying about a nice gun being confiscated for evidence is stupid. The odds of any of us even using a gun in self defense is so low to begin with that itís a non-issue for me. Secondly, Iíd have far more things on my mind then worrying about it to begin with. Trauma at being in a shooting to begin with. Trauma of taking a human life. Financial issues of hiring lawyer for either criminal or civil defense. Even if Iím not charged either criminally or civilly Iím not talking to the cops without a lawyer. Worry about possible retribution from the assailants more than likely low life friends and family. Replacing a gun wouldnít even be on my radar.

But show me where a lighter and smaller plastic gun is less reliable. Feeding empty cases? Some do and some donít. Who cares? I care about feeding live rounds and expending spent brass. Quality plastic guns do that just fine. Glocks arenít my thing but they sure do take a beating. Any other quality plastic gun does as well.

I carried 3rd Gens for several years (3914LS, 3913, 5906, 915) after I left the C&L community...
Despite it's ideal size, I never could warm up to the CS9, and stuck with the 39xx for most of the CCW work.
A few years back I went to the dark side, and now a SIG P365 follows me around almost exclusively. Never thought I'd be a Striker guy, but it's hard to beat the weight, size, and capacity. I can't say I shoot it better, or worse. I'd have no problem going back to the 3914, though. I have less through those guns than a lot of folks here, but for the thousands I did put through them, never once did I see a hiccup.
