I own, carry and shoot multiple examples of both the 4506 and 4516, in all their guises and dash numbers. I think my answer would depend on what you want the gun to do?
Carry? Truck gun? Fun range piece? Home defense pistol? While a 4516, in any dash number, is simply a compact 4506, I think for carry by Joe Citizen who isn't kicking doors or storming beaches, a 4516 is a fine compact 45 carry gun. It shoots like a big gun too. Very accurate and reliable.
For a "Truck gun", fun range piece......or even carry, a 4506 is a great 45. It weighs within a few ounces, either way of the vaunted 1911. Not that heavy. Especially with a gunbelt and good holster. And I have a couple of the 4506-1s whose accuracy matches that of my Colt Gold Cup and HK USP. VERY accurate.
$500 in the box is an excellent price for either model. You may find a used 4516 for abit less, but you will be having a REALLY good day if you find a 4506 anywhere for $500 or less.
So, I guess I would get the 4506, for that price, were I you. Good luck with your decision! Let us know which you choose and how it shoots, for you. Regards 18DAI

A quick look at the big auction site recent sales shows that most sold for over $650 and under $700.

My dealer called me to tell me he has a LNIB 4506-1 in. Still has the inspection sticker on the frame. $695.
I'm going to see it in the morning. NIB examples are getting scarce. Fair price for fine pistols. Regards 18DAI

I do not have a 4506, but I do have the 4516 and a 4566, and both are excellent firearms. So not having the 4506, that's where I would start. But of the two I have, the 4516 carries the best by a long shot, and the 4566 is a bit more accurate. However it is a TSW model, with a longer barrel and it should shoot better.
Tough call on which to buy without seeing them. But of the two I have, I would consider the 4516 my favorite. It just fits my hand and balances so well.
You're going to be a winner at $500 either way I say. But the one that speaks to you the loudest. And please don't forget to post up some photos of the winner. Win Win I say.

The Model 4506 is big, heavy pistol, much heavier than it needs to be for 45 ACP. It's nice on the range, very easy to control, but would be very heavy as a carry piece.
The Model 4516 is 1.25 inches shorter and frame/magazine is shorter by 1 round. It is well suited for carry.
If you just want a range gun, 4506. If you are thinking about carrying, 4516.

I've owned both......both are good guns......both of mine were traded away back in the 90s
For a concealed carry .45 I found the 4516 to be too heavy.....I switched to a Sig 245 with an alloy frame.
I found the 4506 a bit on the large size...... I found a nice 4566 which I still have.......................
That's my personal experience with these two guns..... that said both would be a good buy at that price if it meets your needs!!!!!

@18DAI
And of course if you haggle deep and score it, you'll holler at me about a swap for my 4516-2 and the ever growing pile of magazines for it.

Sorry fellas to disappoint, but I passed on it. Great gun, NIB. Fair price.
But it was identical to the one in my holster.......and I found another dash 3, with adjustable night sights that I wanted more. Regards 18DAI

Both are great guns, and both area bit heavy for conceal carry. The 4506 is also too big for most people to conceal carry anyway. But I have an early 4506 with the square trigger guard and stepped frame, and it is an amazing range and fun gun. I recommend the 4506.

It did not have the wide barrel hood which I prefer. So I am comfortable with my 18DAI approved 4506-1 original and modified as follows: has the wide barrel hood and forged & flash chromed hammer and trigger, was modified with the 639 extended mag release button and the "decock only" safety system and has been shot enough to prove reliability. I have night sights if I want to install them. Take a look.
What else could you want unless it is an 845.

I bought a 4506 New in either late 1993 or early 1994, in Monroe, Louisiana. If my memory serves me right, it had the ambidextrous safety and adjustable target sites. I think, like a Gold Cup it also came with two springs, one for target loads and one for heavy loads. Wish I had never sold it? If I came across one in the original box at a fair price I would grab it.
