Never a Gen 1-3 S&W in 380
I have noticed that there never was a S&W Gen 1 through 3 pistol that was in 380ACP. Did S&W ever issue a statement why that caliber was never used in a model?

I believe they did make a 380 abomination during that era. It was a zinc piece of junk that didn't sell.

That was the Sigma polymer frame gun - the SW380.
Not a lot of positive comments on it...

S&W brought out the Sigma .380 in the mid 1990’s, along with a slightly larger version in 9mm. Both were short lived. Inexpensively made, difficult to disassemble, and both had a shelf life of just a few thousand rounds (5,000 maybe?). They were, like Rhett Butler, not well received.
I had two in .380 and one in 9mm. I lost track of one of the .380’s, but the other and the 9mm are still being carried and occasionally shot by the people I traded them to.

First: Do working prototypes count?
If "Yes," then a full-on, pretty as one pleases Pre-Model 39 had a working .380 ACP; even had the top-of-barrel/chamber marked in "380 CTG" nomenclature.
It was a "Pre- . . . um, well, uh . . . 380(?)"
Presently limited to bar bets, one wonders where No-Name, No-Model but Serial Number 1501 is hanging nowadays?

I was referring to production model Gen 1 through 3. Polymer guns wouldn't fall into this category. It would seem they would have made a 380 version of the 39 series Gen 1 through 3. I just wondered if S&W ever commented why they never used this round during those years?

I think those were the days when 45's and 10mm were at the top of S&W's LEO focused food chain.

Ya know, OP, that's a great question. I've never paid attention to the lack of a .380 in the G1-G3 era. I hope one of the folks in tune with what went on in those days will chime in!

There was no metal receiver .380 ACP counterpart to the S&W metal receiver S&W pistols. Just as odd, S&W did not introduce a 45 ACP metal receiver pistol until the second generation of pistols, even though I understand it was a frequently requested caliber.
