OK, I have owned a pre A series 1968 5.5" M41 for about 5 hours.
I will spend time reading, but I have some things to throw out.

First off, I got a 10 shot mag that will not hold the bolt open. The little tit above the knurled thumb button is not there. So use it and disregard a potential dry fire on the last shot if I lose count, or load a 22 cal snap cap in the mag first so it is a nine shot?

Does a dry fire hurt these?

The trigger is awful light, but I think I know how to adjust it. Any do's or don'ts here, tricks of the trade or things to watch out for?

it has a magazine extension, I am not sure I like. They just screw on? I know there is a spring involved here.

Is there a time when mainsprings should be changed just because they get old and tired?

Any special do's and don'ts regarding the use of these? I am pretty much a revolver, rifle and shotgun type of guy, so a comp 22 pistol is a bit new to me

I would not dry fire. Use a little yellow drywall anchor as a snap cap.

Shoot it and enjoy it. I love mine. You will grow to enjoy the light trigger. Magazines prices are very inflated on eBay but I have bought them for $23 at gun shows. Metal follower or plastic follower, my gun doesn't care.

The “tit” on the left side of the magazine is what engages the slide stop to lock the slide back when the magazine is empty. The fix is a new magazine.

The trigger is adjustable but it’s a little more complicated than an adjustment screw. Use the search function here or on google. The model 41 was designed as a target pistol so the trigger is intentionally light.

I do not dry fire any 22lr and I don’t know if the model 41 is ok to dry fire or not.

“It has a magazine extension”. I’ve never heard of of one for the M41. Please post some pictures or a better description so we can answer your question.

The model 41 is my favorite 22 handgun. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

Reference the trigger.....how light is "awful light". The trigger pull can be adjusted. There is also a trigger overtravel stop.

S&W warns against dry firing any of their "rimfire" handguns.

The lip of a .22 cal round protrudes or covers the barrel chamber.

Notice where the firing pin makes contact on the casing. It's inline with the edge of the chamber.

By dry firing there is a possibility the firing pin could make contact with the barrel damaging the firing pin or the entrance to the chamber.
I guess it all depends on which metal is harder.

If you don't want to use snap caps kleiss1 #2 post made a great suggestion.

I have been using the A-ZOOM training rounds. The package says you can dry fire but only a few times. They are used for test cycling.

You can get them at home Depot too.

Thanks for the help! Carter the how to tutorial is pretty neat. I have torn it down already but not made any changes. My comment about dry firing was to protect the firing pin from the chamber wall in case of an accidental dry fire. I never dry fire anything I own, and I do not like to store the gun cocked
