Model 41 date of manufacture and suppressed barrel
Hi!
I am completely new to this forum and... I'm french...
I discovered the S&W Model 41 3 weeks ago and...I really love it!
I think mine (a 5,5") is an old one (There is no drilling on the top and the sighting is not recent) but I don't know when it was manufactured
Here is the engraved serial number: 338058XXX. (XXX are also numbers)
Could a nice person tell me what the manufacturing date is?
Second question please: I would like to equip my model 41 with a threaded barrel. Could you tell me which one is most suitable for maintaining good performance at 50 meters?
Thanks very much for your help.
Kind regards from France.

Welcome to the Forum from Canada,
The serial# you posted contains to many digits to be a serial# applied by S&W. Best to take a pic of the serial# on the frame and post. I'm not aware of threaded barrel options for the Model 41 as it's a target pistol but someone may chime in.

I found places in the USA where a threaded barrel is sold and places threading the factory barrel. I doubt that will help you in France. You should consult your silencer dealer.
An "engraved number 338058XXX " has the right number of digits for a US Social Security Number. The serial number is stamped on the left side of the receiver above the trigger.

Bonjour!!
I'm not sure what to make of your serial#. I've personally never seen one with that many digits. I have 2, one early (1964) and one later (1985) and here is a pic of the pistols with serial#s. I'm not exactly sure when in the 80's S&W changed from 6 digits to 3 alfa/4 digit serial#s for the Model 41. Tough to read the serial# on the second one (29450). S&W went to a "A" serial# prefix in the 70's.

That is the right font and the right location but far too many digits. Even leaving off the XXX, serial numbers without prefix stopped at 115000.

Thanks for your answers.
I'm disapointed, I thinked I would have the manufacture date.. Maybe is it because it's an "european" gun?
I've got an other question please: When I tried different ammunitions, I encountered problems inserting the cartridge into the barrel ...
At the time, I did not understand but by dismantling the barrel, here is what I see:
I think the burrs are not normal ...
Do you think it is possible to file them very gently so that the circle is round?
Many thanks for your help

Have a gunsmith clean up the chamber with a reamer for .22LR. Considering the number of target pistols out there, it should be available in Europe. It might not be possible to buy a threaded barrel in the US and ship it to France because of certain international agreement on firearms and parts.

I have Clark and Bully threaded barrel. Both work fine. Clark makes them by threading the S&W barrel and looks stock. The Bully is lighter than the Clark.

Many thanks @batman4706 for your update.
After some researches, I have the impression that it is not possible to find a threaded barrel which looks like the original barrel (BOP barrel)...is it correct?

Hello!
An other question please: What type of red dot do you recommend for a S&W 41? Burris Fast Fire 3 with Picatinny mounts?
Many thanks for your help!

Bully has one that is similar with a pictinny rail that you could mount a red dot on.
Ray-Vin.Com
Clark sells barrels & they will thread them for you.

Here is a Fast Fire III mounted on a 5 1/2" bbl. on a BME base that fits in the dovetail. My 75 year old eyes like the FFIII.

Thanks for your answers. That's perfect
So the Burris FF3 is a good red dot for the S&W41 (thanks @72AV8R).
No other suggestion?

As I've said in many Model 41 / red dot posts, consider the variable power Leupold extended eye relief scope. I have two 41's with this set up and love them.

Thank you very much for your reply @ Tom S.
Please do you have the exact reference of the Leupold variable power extended eyepiece scope or a link to a web site?
Thank you
