Default 39-2 Nickel

Picked this up from a widow who actually knew what it was and what it was worth and I paid a fair price for it. Now for what is different from other 39-2 nickel plated pistols, someone jeweled various parts, hammer, trigger sides, side of hammer, top of barrel and a couple of other parts. Also I am not sure the rear sight is original and that is my question, did S&W ever use MMC adjustable sights?? Also the grips are polymer ( she thought they were Ivory ) with the S&W emblem. See pictures. Just saw another post just down from mine and see the MMC sights are aftermarket. What is the general idea as to value??

What was the fair price you paid for this mod 39-2?

It has been my experience that aftermarket modifications such as the sights and jeweling don't necessarily increase the value of a gun and can in fact reduce it. Modifications are personal and reduce the overall appeal to a smaller group of people. While some would like the changes made to your 39-2 and be willing to pay a premium for it those same changes would prevent others from buying it at all even for a reduced price.

What's the value of your nickel 39-2? Whatever you place on it. The amount you paid was worth it to you so enjoy your new gun and don't look back! The 39-2 is a great gun in any case.

i pretty much agree with lhump, almost word for word. jeweling was popular in the 60s to early 80s but for the most part has fallen out ov favor with most. that and the replaced sights reduce it to shooter value and i doubt anyone would pay a premium for the modifications. it would bring 300-350 in my area.

anyway, you liked it enough to buy it so for you it should be worth whatever you paid and the 39 is among my favorite s&w pistols.

Hmmmm... looks pretty well pimped out to me. I wonder if it started out as a factory nickel plated Model 39-2 or if the entire pistol has been refinished. Regardless, value, like beauty, for something like this will be purely in the eye of the beholder.

Gave $350 for it. wasn't going to lowball her, she wanted 350 and it was fair to both of us. I did get it to the range this morning and it ate everything I fed it, even as fast as I could pull the trigger. SOOOO long story short, it's a keeper!

Collectors abhor such modifications, but If I'd come across it at that price I'd have bought it without hesitation. Neat old S&W 39-2 IMHO.
I thought that forward spring section of the sight was machined, looking closer I see it is the matte finished and nickeled, but original type mounting system. I'd still have bought it in a heartbeat.

$350 was a gift for you. Cherish it. I would. Practically speaking, the rear sight is a plus.

Yep, well worth the dollar spent. Congratulations on the find. The 39-2 I had would also eat anything I offered it. Very good gun.

I've got two NIB nickel 39-2's, a NIB blue 39-2 and a few shooter grade 39-2's. All of the shooters will digest anything I throw at them. One of my nickel shooters LUVS Rem-UMC yellow box bulk packed, shoots it like a target pistol. I can't reload any cheaper than what I pay for Rem-UMC yellow box bulk.

You did VERY good price wise with all the extra magazines.

I’m not a big fan of nickel plated firearms, but that one is very attractive from every angle and aspect. If you don’t like the MMC sights, the originals either semi- or fully adjustable are commonly available as are original blued (color cased?) hammers and triggers if the jeweling on those offends your sensibilities. At the price you got it, returning it to original configuration might be an economically viable option, but then again, you might want to respect the previous owner who built it to suit himself and just enjoy it as is.

If it were mine, and I were to change anything, I would consider going whole hog and replacing the hammer and trigger with originals (fine tuned, of course) then adding a blued slide stop, ambi safety, and fully adjustable factory rear sight (also blued) to emphasize the beauty of the nickel. Then I would finish the whole thing off with a set of ebony or black micarta grips. JMHO, of course and it’s your gun and your money!
