Default My latest Model 39

Pictured is the latest model 39 I stumbled upon. It was shipped in July of 1968. "gmborkovic" sent me a PM letting me know that this is the highest numbered model 39 he has in his data base. It came in the original box with 2 original magazines and a complete 39-2 slide (minus the barrel). It has a green front sight insert and a white outline rear sight blade which I can live with.
I had to replace the trigger play spring and trigger play spring rivet. It now functions perfectly. I will be shooting it soon.

"gmborkovic", thank you for the information.

Pretty gun! I can't quite make out the SN but I've recorded Model 39s up into the 109XXX range. Is yours that high? There are even a few during the transition period with A prefix numbers. There are also some 39-2 guns with no prefix.

Kevin, its 106103. If you have higher mod-39 numbers, I missed them.
This is an interesting transitional period. Mike

My issued 39 serial number is 300 higher. Note the modified split extractor.

Very nice! I wonder if the prior owner bought the -2 slide to save wear and tear on the original when firing. I've heard some of the extractors on the early models could be a bit delicate, plus hard to find if they end up breaking. Not a bad idea.

My dept had our 39-nothings modified with that split extractor. I don't know how many other 39s had that mod. That particular 39 was first issued in 1968.

S&W 39-2 is one of the best guns ever created, easy, reliable, efficient. Respect whoever carries it, he knows what the gun is.

"kennethg" very nice find! I have a later S/N 108919 model 39 that was shipped 11/69. It was an Illinois State Police pistol. There is a notable thread on this pistol. Interesting read.

39 No dash ISP pistol/Range results added 8/21

For the members of the forum to understand Pedro Worms y Cia, it was an important gun shop in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and was a representative of Smith & Wesson, Remington and other top brands, unfortunately it closed its doors in 2009.

Beautiful acquisition! Rare weapon...I had in the early eighties a S&W M39-1 which had incorporated much needed improvements to enhance the 39s reliability. My 39-1 even cycled 158 gr SWC reloads (Yes, 158 gr swc .358 using data from a period gun magazine (I forgot which, perhaps NRA or Guns and Ammo)).

That 39 of yours is a rarity, and congratulations - thanks for sharing!

S&W M39-1
No such animal. It was developed for the Army Marksmanship Training Unit in .38 AMU but S&W was worried about folks trying to fire 9mm in it so they changed the model number to 52. If your pistol fired 9mm it was either a Model 39 or a Model 39-2.

Yes, it was 39-2 (which made the improvements to enhance reliability to the problems encountered in the base 39 model), my oversight...heck it’s was nearly forty years ago!
