Default Smith-Wesson Auto Pistol ID Wheel

While discussing various SW 2nd and 3rd guns at my local gun shop, an older employee mentioned he thought he may still have a rotating wheel rubric that gave different model “decoding” that explained what a 1006 was vs a 4046 etc from the 80s. This never came to fruition but I thought it would be neat to buy etc.

Needless to say he never did find it and no longer works there. I am looking for something like it for nostalgic sake. I have seen the very excellent LuckyGunner website writeup that clearly explains the models etc.

Does anyone remember this or has one?

Any idea where I could find or obtain one? The Bay of E did not have any. Neither did the Broker of Guns.

I have one, SOMEWHERE. The question is exactly where. I cannot promise when or if but should I stumble across it, I'll contact you.

You wouldn't understand unless you've actually seen my storage boxes and storage rooms of S&W associated items and oddities. 40+ years worth of stuff I've been stashing away when started looking for old S&W catalogs back in the late 1970s.

If you come across it you will have my sincere thanks. Collecting a handful of the full-size stainless SW metal autos has been interesting. Having a few period oddities to go with them (catalogs and dealer cards, etc) just add to it.

I may eventually setup a display for the local gun show in a few years. Such well made pistols that were ground breaking for the period. To me SW pretty much defined the handgun market in the 80s between the revolvers and autos. I can remember going to the SW store in SC w my father many years ago.

Mine is tucked inside the cover of the SCS&W !

It's one of those things that now you know that it exists, and what it is and how scarce, you'll be able to jump one one if it ever shows up on one of the auction sites, or even on our own Classified section here.

What would be great is if we could get high-resolution images of the disks themselves posted and then we could print our own copies on cardstock and use Xacto knives to cut the windows on the outer disk. A simple rivet would then make it functional.

Referring back to post #7, to get a pic of the underneath rotating disc, the rotating center point of the 'whiz wheel' would have to be destroyed. I don't think anybody's gonna molest such a rare item. I have 2, both still in the S&W OEM cellophane packaging. No, not selling one.

Here is an early brochure with the same information as the whiz wheel.

The 'whiz wheel' is a S&W collectable item and has nothing to do with being needed to identify a pistol.
