Default Buy or not buy a 457?

I saw one at a local gun show today, and while I was looking more for pre-lock revolvers (the ONLY one at the show was a beat-up model 64 that was overpriced!) it was really tempting me. It included 6 OEM mags, Hogue grip, the OEM grip, a leather OWB holster (some off-brand, AFAIK) and 3-dot night sights that have lost their energy. The guy was asking $425, tax included. It had some holster wear visible on the edges, but all things considered it was in good condition. I know little about this model; what can you guys tell me?

I hope you can go back to the show tomorrow and buy it, because that package is an excellent value. The 457 is a great little pistol, and with the six mags and holster, plus the night sights (which would have to have been added after-market) and the choice of grips, you would have a worthy rig in God's caliber. Even though they were one of S&W's "value line" offerings, the 457 is reliable, well-made, and will, I would be willing to bet you, be more accurate than you might expect out of a production pistol.

If you buy it and don't end up wanting to keep it, I'm sure you could easily recoup your investment by offering the package here. I've owned two of these, and I never had a minute's problem with either one.

That is a decent price for the pistol and a lot better deal with the mags and holster. I’d been hard pressed not to buy that pistol.

That's a good price. The magazines can be hard to find, so figure around $35.00 each for them. The one with the yellow follower might be marked something like "For use with 4516-1 only, but it will work fine in the 457.

Depending on who made the night sites, you might be able to get the relamped. Trijicon was charging $54.00 to do all three, including return shipping. If they're the manufacturer, go to the website and fill out an RMA requesting relamp. They'll contact you and give you instructions.

The 457 didn't use the Novak night sites as part of the cost savings S&W implemented for those guns.

Great price on a very underated 45. Especially with that many mags. And night sights are hard to find for the 457.

I have many thousands of rounds through mine, with zero malfunctions - BUT, I keep mine cleaned and lubed AND I change my recoil springs every 2K rounds or 2 years whichever comes first.

Great pistol. Buy it with confidence. Good luck! Regards 18DAI

Have you gone back to buy it yet?
If not SADDLE UP!
I got one with stock sights, 3 mags, and a nice holster for $335 a couple of years ago, and felt I made out like a bandit.

Thank you for your advice, guys. I just called the guy and he still has it but is halfway home from leaving the gun show. Told him to give me a price that I simply couldn't refuse so he hemmed and hawed and said $400. I asked if there was any way he'd do $385 and he said he would. It's about a 50 mile trip to his place, so we just have to work out the logistics of picking it up.

Very good price and well worth the drive.

It would be a good idea to replace the recoil springs. It uses two nested springs and inner and outer.

You can call customer service to see if they have springs in stock. If not Springco has made a set that works well. A bit more expensive than the factory springs, but worth it.

So I have another question that sound sacrilegious to some, but is there another model of Smith that has a compatible/interchangeable hammer that has a spur? I would love to have the ability to easily cock it manually if possible.

The 4506/4566 hammers will fit, but you'll need to change the stirrup. In fact, I think just about any 3rd Gen spurred hammer will work as long as you use the correct stirrup.

It’s the only way to go. Did it to my 4516, 3913, & 469. A hammer from any Gen 3 full sized gun should work. Just make sure it’s the same type hammer, be it MIM, or blue steel. GARY.

"Correct", as in a stirrup for the same model of donor gun as the hammer will be coming from?

The stirrup needs to be the "correct" length for your 457.

That isn't much of a problem because you can re-use the stirrup from the spurless hammer you will be replacing.

So to understand correctly, what GaryS said regarding the stirrup is only an issue if I change to a hammer with a different metallurgical makeup? If going from blue-to-blue (or MIM-to-Mim) the hammer is the only part needed, but I would need to also get the matching stirrup if I changed from MIM to blued steel, or vice versa? Would it be safe to say that a blued hammer would be the same design as a stainless? I ask this because--unless I'm mistaken--the hammer from a 5906 or similar gun would appear to be an option as well.

It's not the material of the stirrup, it's the length. Different guns had different length stirrups. You'll need to make sure that the spring matches as well, but if you're reusing the stirrup, you can reuse the spring as well.

The recommendation is to use a hammer of the same material, but JohnHL can give the details.

I see you did buy it from your FB post. Congrats.

Jcon72, if you wish to replace your spurless hammer with a spur hammer on your model 457, you are in luck.

You may choose a spur hammer from practically ANY 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gen TDA (DA/SA) pistol model WITHOUT regard to material.

They will all interchange although the 1st and 2nd gen hammers will have a "half-cock notch".

The MIM hammer would be the best choice as it is most widely available, is the latest and best design, and is very smooth where it rubs against the sear during double action and gives the smoothest trigger pull.

As far as the stirrup and hammer spring (mainspring) are concerned, all are made from the same material and the only thing that matters is length.

But like I said before, just transfer your existing stirrup and spring to your new hammer and everything will fit.

John

I liked mine a lot. Some years back I let my old law partner have my 457 because I mostly carried my CS-45 at that time and he gave his Para-Ord .45 to his brother-in-law in New Mexico after the poor guys parents were murdered (long, ugly story).

I paid $350 for it around 20 years ago, give or take a year, so I'd say with the whole package it sounds righteous to me.

Buy
It's been around since 1911
Every manufacturer makes one
They sell like hot cakes
If you don't own one ...you will never know what you are missing out on.

A buddy had a gunshop ...he confided that he easily sell every 1911 that came through his door with no problems...high end , low end , tricked out custom jobs and basic no frill...they would all sell.
There has to be a reason why .
I own 4 .... but I know why .

The 457 is, thankfully, not a 1911 pattern gun. It's a TDA compact sized .45ACP pistol that is reliable, needs no modification to be accurate, and is relatively light due to it's alloy frame.

Everyone that I've let shoot my 457, which includes a couple of hardcore 1911 fans, marvels at how accurate it is. They marvel even more when I tell them that they can be had for around $400.00 for the black version and under $500.00 for the stainless version.

All of the above are reasons for buying a 457. Currently I have one black and one stainless.

Sorry for beating a dead horse, but a stainless 639 hammer should work fine with the 457 and add the half-cock feature, correct?

Already have the 1911 and got the t-shirt...
My wife bought this Desert Eagle 1911 for me for our 25th anniversary a couple of years ago, including the custom laser-engraved grips. Yeah, I'm luckier than most guys.

That is absolutely correct!

Although the "stainless" hammer is not really stainless.
It's plated.

Unfortunately, your trigger is black and it won't match. (only a problem for the "fashion conscious")

You could also locate a silver trigger, slide release, and safety.

Those items would really "pop" against the black background.

And the horse doesn't mind.

It's already dead...

I'm not too worried about the hammer matching the trigger, especially since locating the stainless one with the stirrup for $30. The half-cock option is also appealing--although not a necessity.
As for switching out the trigger, slide release and decocker....that would be nice but costly. A lot more than I could justify for this piece unless a fantastic deal just happened to cross my path.

So I picked up my gun from the FFL this evening. While my original comment stated that the included holster was an "off brand", on closer inspection it is a High Noon "Sky High" which costs close to $120 on their web site. This is a name previously unknown to me, but after reading other folks' opinions on their products apparently they make very high quality holsters. Score!

Thanks to you guys' suggestions I found a really nice stainless hammer from a 639 for a decent price on eBay. It arrived today so I swapped it out after finishing my work-from-home. Some folks may not care for it but it works for me. It's nice to have a spur and it can always be re-swapped in the future if the desire strikes.
