Default Model 39 with skelotonized magazzine

I've got a 39 no dash in pristine condition. Came with original mags and then I picked up a skeletonized mag at a gun show a few years ago. Any idea what the value of this collection?

Pictures would be worth a thousand words. Does your Model 39 have its box and papers?

Hello Kingman60, you got my attention, I have some four digit mod 39s
with what is referred to as the military mag. The sides are cut out to reveal the cartridge count. the follower should be in the shape of an eight(8) or X and the base plate stamped S&W. They were first available on the parts list in Sept. of 1958. Pls. post the Sn. or send me a PM. OH! and the matching numbered blue box. Very nice. Good snag. best, Mike

I believe there was also an Israeli version of the model 39 that used skeletonized magazines and clear polymer grips that allowed the user to see how many rounds were left in a magazine.

I wish I did. They're rare indeed. It would be a gem in my collection regardless of its shape (well it has to be in shooting condition at least). I'm not certain what other mods were made to the Israeli 39. Oddly enough, today in my local gunshop, a 39-2 in good NRA condition showed up for 500-bucks. I already have one in way better shape. Weird coincidence is all.

If anyone needs, just holler. Contact me via mail from this forum.

That mag reminds me of every Makarov magazine I've ever owned. They have all been "skeletonized". That's the first one I've even seen for a S&W though. (but that's not saying much)

Nice looking pistol!

I dont know if the cut out mag was sent as original factory equipment or
merely an accessory on the parts sheet? The early 39s boxed that I have encountered have all ways had the seven hole solid body shell.

The skeletonized magazine is one for the Israeli 39s that came into the country a long while ago. They were skeletonized because these particular 39's had clear polymer grip panels so the user could see how many rounds were in the pistol; a fairly necessary thing for Mossad field agents.

You've mentioned this a couple of times. Do you have an example or a picture or some documentation? Not doubting you but would like more information.

Absolutely agree. But the Sept.1958 parts list has them pictured.
Maybe for post purchase acquisitions. I dont know, who does?

I looked around to find a picture, there aren't many it seems, but then, there aren't a lot of them in-country. I believe I did find one that appears refurbished. It has the channel sights instead of the standard or Novak sights, quicker target acquisition when moments count. Not sure why they removed the ribbing on the slide, but they did. Reduce holster friction or grabbing again when an instant of time makes all the difference? It was a highly modified pistol.

It is an ASP designed by Paris Theodore. Paris Theodore - Wikipedia I don't believe it has anything to do with Israel. The ASP, the DEVEL, the Trapper and Austin Behlert's conversions all were similar ideas--a cut down concealable 9mm pistol before they were available from the big makers. Most of them used the so-called military mag (skeleton mag) for the visibility afforded. Here's the DEVEL:

Back in the 1970's, I purchased a couple directly from S&W. They were accessories. You could order these as well as a military dust cover. Would fit over slide and be retained by the slide stop pin.
