Default 3rd gen mix-n-match question

New to 3G’s...

Is there any equivalent to the 1911 Commander? i.e. full-size with a slightly shorter barrel/slide?

Is there any equivalent to the 1911 CCO? i.e. Commander upper on a compact (Officer) lower? Would this work between two different sized models?

TIA!

Buy a 5906/3906 and 6906/3913 swap slides and mission accomplished. The 5906 and 6906 are double stack the 3903 and 3913 are single stack but the slides all interchange.

5906 SSV (Short Slide Variant) mated a 6906 top to the 5906 receiver. Finding one can be a challenge, but if you have a 5903/5904/5906 you might be able to find a 6904 or 6906 complete top end or the slide and parts to assemble a top end and make your own SSV. Personally, I find it an expensive endeavor just to make the pistol a whopping 1/2 inch shorter.

Funny a few years back I bought a couple of complete barrel/slides ......a 915 and a 59xx (adjustable sight) for around $125-150 each.

Built a 6915 ...... 6906 frame and a 915 barrel/slide. have a complete 6906 upper in the safe. NO it's not for sale.

If you want to keep this in the realm of 45ACP, then the best swap is a 4516 (compact frame & slide) and a 4566 (4.25" Commander length slide & full size frame). 7+1 compact grip with a 4.25" slide on top.

Like BAM-BAM, I also have a 69 series frame with a longer 4" 915 top end on it, aka the 6904 Long Slide, which is a compact double-stack 9mm CCO.

My first 'Frankengun' is a 908 frame with a longer 4" 910 slide on top, my 908 Long Slide, which is a compact single-stack 9mm CCO.

Learning to put these together will teach you all about the S&W 3rd Gen family, since not all slides and frames are compatible. Some guns come from the 45 branch of the tree, which won't be compatible with the 9mm side. Other slides won't fit certain frames due to the front frame rails (or lack thereof), and then you have the TSW guns which can have fatter frame rails than some of the earlier models.

In addition to that, any time you do swap a different slide onto a frame, you need to check that the decock timing is still in spec. If not, you will need to file and fit a new sear release lever. Getting a new slide along with a parts kit can help with this, since you may well be able to swap in the sear release lever that came with the new slide and have it work. Before I learned to fit a new sear release lever, this is what I did to make my 908 LSV.

This is how I run my M&Ps, long slide with a compact/sub compact frame. Once I get a 5903/06, I will probably do the same with my 6906.
