Hi folks, can someone help me sort out a purchase I may make? The pistol involved is a Model 52-2 mfg in 1982. The frame and slide are correct for a Model 52 but the barrel and magazine are marked 9MM. The owner has a second 5 inch barrel marked "38 spl mid range" but does not have a magazine. I'd like to make the purchase but I have never seen a set up as described. The S&W Catalog 4th Ed mentions five known 52-2's chambered in 9mm but they were 4 inch barrels and the writers indicate the slides were from a model 39. See page 351 under "Variations". Thanks for any insight.

Don’t know if I can help or not. Hard to judge without pictures. I Bought a model 52 in a bag For $300 a year or so ago(see ‘bag-o-gun’ post). I have 5 model 52’s and know Enough to put together one from parts. What is the asking price?

Asking price is $1000 which seems to be decent based on what I have seen these models sell for online and at shows. That said I am not anxious to spend that kind of money and end up with something that does not function. Thanks for the interest.

As with Mine, the magazine should work just fine.

I'm confused. How does simply changing a barrel work in a 52 originally built for 38 Spl.? Wouldn't the slide also have to be changed? There's quite a difference in the rim diameters of the 9mm and 38 Spl. The bolt face is made for the larger rim of the 38 Spl. Wouldn't that be too large to handle a 9mm?
