Question on SW 4566
I picked up a Smith Wesson 4566 a while ago but its different then most I see else where. This one is black, novak sights, and has front cocking serrations. Its a factory finish ...and I believe the front serration are factory too. The gun is SA/DA capable.
Anyone have any information on it, is it unique? Let me know your thoughts...

Congrats! A VERY scarce model 4566. It took me almost 20 years to locate mine. Thanks to member Paddlingman I got it. Thanks again Paddlingman!
I'll try and post a pic of mine tomorrow. I think I did post pics of it in a thread here. You may want to check through the threads I started.
Anyways, here is the little I know about this scarce 4566. First time I saw one was at a S&W LE dealer around....1999...2000? It was on a flyer. Marketed as an LE model with 3 mags. But the dealer could not find one at the distributor.
I was told by a retired S&W LE rep that there were around 25 of these made. As salesman's samples to try and gin up interest among LE agencies.
Mine is very nice. Everything I wanted in a duty 4566. I am not sure what the finish is. It is much more durable than the usual S&W black sharpie marker finish. But it is not a bead blast blue and I am not sure it is Melonite as it wears too easy. My Melonite 4566 shows almost no wear. I will check my box label tomorrow.
Very nice gun! Congrats on scoring it. Regards 18DAI
Edited to add: Is your serial prefix KJF?

I believe you have a 4566-M which is unusual. Its a melanite finish gun that is rare. S&W was blindsided by the Glock revolution and tried to market a pistol with that finish, even though the gun was stainless steel and really didn't need it. It is still a 4566 just with a different finish. Grats on finding it, hope it didn't cost you too much.

Thanks for the picture. Nice.
Hope you don’t mind me turning it. My neck was just having a hard time and my tablet just kept righting itself.

What does the writing say that's inscribed on the frame in front of the slide stop?

Lawyer language. "CAUTION DECOCKING LEVER RETURNS TO THE READY TO FIRE POSITION".
These were decock only pistols. Like the similar 4566M pistols and LE Special order 4566s.
Thanks 4T5GUY! Regards 18DAI

I picked it up at a pawn shop about a year ago, have only seen (1) other like it since then doing research and it was on an auction site.. They said these were US Marshall guns.. but after further research I could not verify...
It's a great gun, and I like the unique aspect of it. My first 45 was a SW 645, then a 4513, and now this.

I don't know what you paid for it, Echo99, and I'm not asking, but I seriously doubt that the pawn shop knew what it had there. These are unicorns, and to stumble upon one in the wild like you did is rare good fortune indeed.
If you type KJF into the search box here on the Forum, you'll get a set of responses that will allow you to "read all about it."
Enjoy that fine 45!

Agreed, that is a very lucky find, especially in a pawn shop. Congrats on a beautiful pistol Echo99!
