Default 4516-1 Just a great shooter.

It's been several months since I shot my EDC. Went up to the neighbors range today , and I don't know if it's because I was relaxed or what, but , at 30 ft all my shots were an 8 inch circle. I am so very pleased with this pistol. I thought my CZ P-09 shot well, I shoot way better with this..
Only wish I had known about these many years ago and bought one.
I Shot Red Army 230 GR Steel case.100 rnds no failures.

I viewed it and subscribed, waiting to see all the responses.

I am fortunate to own several 3rd Gen. guns, a few 4500 series, but unfortunately have not got my hands on a 4516-1. I have been watching, just haven't found the one for me, the search continues....

Be careful Doc, one leads to two, two to three, and they just seem to keep coming home with me.

My first step in was with a 4506, got it for a steal, and all I was really looking for was a solid 45, non 1911. Like you I didn't know what I missing in the Smith 3rd Gen pistols, and once I got the 4506, the addiction and sickness overtook me.

I've got one that I had to have when they first came out or near after. I purchased mine new in 1993 from Sports Authority here in Florida, years later taken over by Dick's. i purchased it (4516-1) and my 5906 near same time. The 5906 seems a bit heavier but BOTH are amazing guns.

I absolutely loved it and carried the 4516-1 for a short time before it was put away only because this is Florida and the 4516-1 it is heavy little auto.

It is all stainless steel, frame and slide. Not an easy chore to carry with shorts on, in 100+ degree weather.

I would conservatively estimate that approximately 500 rounds were put through it since new, with NONE Of those being anytime in the past 25 or so years. It stays loaded on the top shelf of the safe as my immediate "go to" gun, in an emergency.

Still have the box and papers, etc. a few extra mags. IIRC a few of the mags are "new", with correct yellow follower.

I picked up one of the CHP 4006 TSWs too! What a great gun. It handles the 40 S&W without issue, the recoil impulse is negligible. Love the all steel Smiths!

I have found all the variants of the 4516 to be great shooters. Accurate out of all proportion to their size.

And bet your life reliable. Regards 18DAI

I have a 4516-1 and a 4586. Though the 4516 was badmouthed by Ayoob during it's production time I've never had any trouble with mine and the same goes for the 4586. Great pistol.

A guy on another forum, told me he would prefer EAA 45 witness over a 4506.
And said he prefers sar K2 over the 4506 I think he's crazy.

People have strange ideas and sometimes they change their minds. When Idaho State Police went to the 4586 I shot dad's and I didn't care for it. Throughout the nineties when then the 3rd Gen pistols were in full production I didn't like them. I thought they were bulky, awkward and heavy. I liked Sig and Beretta. However I was in my twenties and looked at things differently.

Like most things in life I didn't really appreciate the 3rd Gen pistols until S&W stopped making them. When dad passed away and the two pistols came to me I really came to appreciate what S&W had made. So it goes.

It's interesting to note that the very same 4586 that I didn't care too much for is now one of my favorites.

There's a reason I still own my big heavy clunky M645.

Flagman1776 I have not seen a PR 24 in years. I beat myself up when I took the class for certification.

Generally speaking, I have found most of S&W's 10mm/45 ACP pistols to have triggers that are far better than what you find on their 9mm/40 pistols and most are very accurate, pretty much all are reliable. There are the occasional lemons, but it seems the big pistols are better than the 9/40 pistols in most respects.

Personally I own a 4506 (no dash) with a 4516 top end on it. It gives me the extra magazine capacity and larger grip size I like with the more compact upper. It is the same as what the 4596 from Lew Horton was only they used the (-1) series. Oh, and I have a stock 4506-1 also, recently acquired in the past year.

And just so they don't feel lonely I also picked up a 4046TSW as a trade-in from Brinks. I had to clean it, replace the recoil springs and got a new stainless guide rod, installed some Hogue grips and it also is a sweeeeeet shooter. I still don't know exactly why I bought it except "Just because"! Once the 3rd Gens get in your blood it's hard to say No.

My 4516 is definitely a shooter. I shoot it better than my 1911 for some reason. I have a fondness for 3rd gen Smith's that I too didn't have when they were being made. Weird huh?

Sometimes you don't appreciate something until it's gone.
