A MUST VIEW IF YOU OWN A MODEL 41 - PSA
Attention model 41 owner's: FORGED VOLQUARTSEN EXTRACTORS NOW AVAILABLE!
I guess enough of us have called Volquartsen and let them know we have been unsuccessful at acquiring them from the normal sources, and we need them produce forged Extractors for our beloved M41's. I spoke to Scott (at Volq.) a few times myself and he finally caved in and said they would do a special run. Anyway, they are doing this special run of them in a week and they are taking orders NOW! I ordered 3 for myself at $12.95 ea. today. If you own a M41 and want to have a few on hand to solve any possible extraction or jamming issues you might have now or in the future, - now's your chance! They may never make this part again, and S&W is too cheap to buy them from Volquartsen and install them from the Factory or stock them. The Factory stamped out Extractors just plain suck and eventually cause many of the problems with the M41.
So for all you guys that own the M41 - call Scott (or his secretary) and get 'em while you can......

And just to be precise, they are EDM wire cut, not forged.
Exact Edge Extractor for MKII, MKIII, MK IV, and 10/22 | Volquartsen Firearms
Note, this is for the 10/22 but the M41 was exactly the same specs.
The M41 part has been removed from their web site.
Whatever, still way better than the stamped S&W part, and why these are not sourced and installed at the S&W factory is a mystery to me !

Mod 41 has to have Mod 41 extractor.
Just wanted to make that clear.

If the Ruger extractors were exactly the same, all the distributors would still have them available and Volquartsen would not be doing a special run.

Same material. Same process, different size / shape so WILL NOT FIT THE M41.

Thanks very much for the update. I never heard back from my original email conversation with Scott that started the previous thread, but I did send him a reply this morning that I wanted to order some and asked how to pay. If I get a link I will post it, if I don't hear anything by 10:00AM, I will call them directly.

In actuality this was the perfect time for Volquartsen to run these - because of the current Corona Virus they probably aren't doing much else now. A win for them - - and a HUGE win for us!

I believe that they used to make them in the past and then stopped.
Don't shoot my M41 enough to warrant getting any. Shoot my Rugers more often. Heck I even like the SW Victory almost as much. The 41 is a heavy sucker.

Just called Volquartsen, ordered 3 extractors. Was told production set to begin in about 2 weeks. Price $12.95 each and shipping was another $3.00
The whole process took less than 4 min. Great people to deal with.

I spoke to Scott via email and ordered several for myself and two for a friend. Glad that everyone jumped in on this and the other thread and we got them made again.
Stay safe and healthy fellow shooters....

M41
SO: what's the deal? Several people have said this "will NOT" fit the M41! Which is it? Tom

The extractor that is going to be made specifically for the 41 will fit the 41. The one for the Rugers will not.
The Ruger part was shown in this thread to show they are made using EDM, not forged.

The Extractor being produced in the next few weeks IS SPECIFICALLY for the Model 41!

As I understand it, The EDM manufacturing process is a precise method of making a part without distortion. The parts that S&W are using are stamped out from sheet metal. Every stamped out part always has a smooth side and a sharp side. The sheet metal being used is a mild steel so the Dies won't wear out in a few hours and therefore the factory part is not very precise, hard or resistant to deformation.
IMHO after owning Model 41's since 1979 and shooting tens of thousands of rounds through them, the weak part of the gun is its Factory Extractor. Once the Volquartsen part is installed, the extraction issues go away! That has been my personal experience with the M41 for 41 years. Of course if there are other separate issues with the gun, simply changing an Extractor might not be the answer, no matter who's part you install. I am simply addressing Extractor issues.

The Chief is correct and as we say during a restoration project on an old car, "while you're in there", make sure that you have a new extractor spring and since the firing pin and it's return spring will be coming out at the same time it would behoove one to check/replace those as well.

Also make sure that you de-burr the extractor spring hole and slot.

You may want to relieve the outboard side of the Volquartsen extractor so it can ride over the rim of the cartridge if a cartridge is in the chamber and the slide is lowered. This allows the M41 to be loaded single shot like a Hammerli X-esse.
As delivered the extractor does not have enough travel to ride over a cartridge rim.
This comes in handy if you are using a long barrel M41 in 50 Meter Pistol competitions.

Thanks for the heads up on these. I ordered a couple, even though I have an extra OEM extractor or two on hand.

This thread seems to have fallen silent. I received my 2 Model 41 extractors today, much quicker than expected.

Could you elaborate a bit more on this? Perhaps show a picture with an extractor marked to show what should be removed?
I'm asking because when I load a dummy 22LR cartridge in the chamber for dry fire practice and close the slide the cartridge will eject if I pull it back too far to reset the trigger for the next practice shot.

My 1973 vintage Mod 41 works great with the original but when I received an e-mail from Volquartsen offering free shipping I ordered one for a spare in case it's ever needed in the future.
