I recently picked up this very clean, square trigger guard 6906. I just got it back from a S&W armorer (& friend) who gave it a full inspection and cleaned up the innards.

It came with the factory box, manual, papers, tools and two magazines. The bottom of the box has a few holes from what looks like high heat, but it's in great shape otherwise and the vapor paper is like new.

I'm amazed at how smooth the trigger is and with the short reset, even for a 3rd Gen. There are initials and a date on the inside box cover of 6/5/90. I'm assuming the original issue date at an agency?

I actually enjoyed shooting it more than the 5906 & 915 I recently purchased. The Trijicon sights have a similar picture to the Novaks on the 5906. Anyone know when this model transitioned from the round rear sight to the Novaks?

All in all, a great purchase that will probably become my wife's high capacity home gun.

Nice 6906. I can't answer your question. My 6906 has the round rear sight.
Mine was an LE trade in and I need to replace the trigger play spring, due to it having one broken leg.
My 6906 and 5906 came from the same agency and have the same serial number prefix, which appears to be late 1988/early 1989.
But, I've been wrong before.

Tough question as S&W is famous for not wasting or throwing anything away. They used the old style rear sight on the 915 which was 1993,

I'm guessing the transition was about two years into production (91)..... note the 6-5-90 on your box ......

Round trigger guard was 93????????

The 3913 was 1989 and came with the Novak sight from the beginning.

A thought/theory........ Could Police orders have been offered with the older round sight to save a few bucks on bids (by S&W) or orders (by the Dept.'s)????

Fixed sights, ambi safety shipped the 333rd day of 1989.

My 5906 and 6906 both have serial numbers starting with TCZ.
Not sure whether they shipped in 88 or 89.

I really like my old beat up 669/6906. It’s got the round trigger guard but many of my large frame 9mm have the squared/ “hooked” ones as yours. I’m one of the few that like that look, (maybe nostalgia,) so it wasn’t an accident that I acquired them.

Get some plus 2 adapter bases and run 15 rnd mags in it.

Another question: are the alloy frame 3rd Gens rated for +P ammo? We're talking JHPs for carry, not regular shooting.

Search around on forum, there's numerous posts by LEOs who
carried 3rd Gens, who's agencies issued +P (and even +P+)
duty ammo.

Yes, the 3rd gen pistols are, per S&W, safe with +P ammo. The 1st and 2nd gen pistols are too, just look at the experience of the Illinois State Police, which used +P, then +P+ in their 39-2's.

Do you really need +P ammo? With modern bullets, no, not really. Typically, with today's JHP bullets, +P gets you faster expansion, but the trade off is reduced penetration. I now reserve my +P ammo for steel receiver 9mm pistols.
