Default 5906TSW help wanted

Someone I know has a nice 5906TSW with 3 mags, and original box for sale. (not here and not an auction. I need a 5906TSW barrel to convert to a 357 Sig using a 4006TSW Gun. That was my plan.
But the guy that has the barrel also has the complete package. I didn't want a 5906TSW until I started thinking about how well they should shoot. MY 5906 is a tack driver. This ought to run rings around it.
My real question is whether the package is worth $500? I am thinking it is in the high end for it but not out of the ballpark too much. Thoughts?

5906tsw barrels show up on MidwayUSA every so often. Might be a better option for you to just wait.

$500 would be low. They didn’t make near as many 5906 TSW as they did of 4006TSW or 4566TSW.

I would never expect any of the TSW guns to be elite level tack drivers, I think you’d have to be very fortunate to find one that shoots like a Performance Center gun.

$500 for that with three mags and original box is a fantastic buy, but if one of the big motivations for the purchase is that you have a 5906 that is hella accurate and you think a 5906TSW will be more accurate, I don’t see that happening.

mbliss, are you saying a guy has a 5906TSW with box and three mags AND a spare 5906TSW barrel, all for $500?

The barrel is worth at least $100.

John?

John no spare barrel. That’s what I am looking for. I’m waitlisted on several vendors . The gun package came up as a possibility when inquiring about a barrel.

OK, my mis-comprehension.

$500 isn't a bad price for that package, unless the pistol is trashed.

Yes a 59806TSW as described is worth it, when is the last one that you saw available? Hang on for the barrel, Midway will have some more.

Default poor condition one

I paid $340 for mine. It was a private deal, early 2019.

Poor condition (pitted and scratched). Box, papers and original cartridge fired.

the only "cheap" ones I have seen are like this.

Mine is accurate.

The standard 3rd gen's and the TSW's used different barrels. I was told there were some dimensional differences involved (like the barrel hood thickness). Not interchangeable.

I once spoke with a factory tech who was familiar with the replacement of some barrels in some older 4006's used by the CHP, after they'd stopped producing new 4006 barrels. He told me it was a laborious process to hand-modify a 4006TSW barrel to let it fit in an older 4006.

In an effort to make improvements on the TSW models, S&W changed the barrel cam lug angles on the 9 and 40 models for the purpose of "delayed unlocking".

Oddly, they found no reason to do the same for the 45 models.

Other than that, the 4006TSW barrel will drop into a non-TSW 4006.

Filing the barrel camming lugs IS a LABORIOUS process because of the excruciatingly short file strokes in the confined area.

I have done this to a 5906TSW barrel (dimensionally very close to the 4006TSW barrel with the exception of a slightly narrower barrel hood) I rechambered to 357 Sig so that I could use it in my 4006 non-TSW models.

I'm glad I have the conversion barrel, but I don't ever want to do THAT filing job again.

Probably could be set up on a mill to re-cut the angles.

John

Thanks guys for your help. It turns out this $500 gun was a ghost. (scam) Your comments about being a low price got me suspicious. I am glad I didn't send any money. There were a couple of other red flags beside your comments but all put together the bad actor was sniffed out. Thanks. It did kind of get me excited about owning one though. I will put it one my "if I get lucky" list. The list that has firearms I would really like to have but not enough to pay market value for them. The 3" Model 65 is one of those. So is a 4" Colt Python from mid 1970s. Just to keep it in the semi auto section an ASP and a Shorty 45.
