S&W 1st to 3rd Gen Chart
Found this on another forum. Tried to put it on PhotoBucket but can not log on (guess I’m not paying them enough).

That damn chart cost me plenty (but I'm not complaining).
I came across it a few years ago and decided, "Wouldn't it be neat to get at least one example of each generation in each caliber. Now I don't "collect" museum pieces, shooters be good enough for me. But I've got got at least one of all of 'em except a 10mm (which ain't happen'n) and a .40 (preferably a 4006TSW CHP in memory of my best pal, a former CHiP).
I keep trading up in terms of quality if I find something better than what I have at a good price. And two of them, the CS9 and 4513TSW got worked on and are now two of my mainstay carry guns (the others are a 642, Beretta PX4 compact, and a Shield in .45acp).
I found a similar chart for Beretta...so I'm hoping this year's harvest of the money tree is a good one...there's a whole bunch of Berettas on that chart.

Good chart, we have been passing that around for a good number of years. See also the similar chart for third gens on SCSW (4th Edition) Page 334.

Be aware there are discrepancies in the chart. 6946's do not follow the numbering system. There are others too, I believe.

I know what you mean. Last summer I bought a CS9 and the rest is history:
3913
3914
4006 (CHP turn in)
6906
4513TSW
Also bought and sold a 410 and another 6906. Since last summer. The CS9 now sports a set of custom grips made from cut down 3913 grips by Delrin TercGenn.
This is the CS9 that started this 3rd Gen S&W thing:
