559 de-cocker problems
Seems that when de-cocker is engaged, when I pull the trigger a few times, all seems well, then after a few times pulling the trigger hammer engages. What should I look for ?

I know this may sound cliche', but try disassembling the sear/disconnector assembly and giving it a complete and thorough cleaning going into detail with Q-tips. This is a slightly daunting task for those unfamiliar with the sear/disconnector group. While its apart inspect the disconnector which is a small J-shaped hook the trigger bar presses against for damage or wear. I'm assuming the safety properly decocks the pistol when depressed? If not you have an issue with the sear safety arm which is one of the three small metal arms that sit above the disconnector/sear group on the back of the frame and are visible once you remove the slide from the pistol. This is not a drop in part and must be hand-fitted with extreme patience and constant testing. I am more convinced the trigger bar's channel is fouled with carbon and powder residue and not letting the trigger bar move along the path it would take with the safety activated. This is an involved process disassembling the action but not impossible. Check out some of the YouTube videos on disassembling S&W 2nd and 3rd gen pistols, there are also a couple sites that detail step by step what and how you do it. Good luck,

S&W59, thank you for the reply. I just got around to taking it apart, this is what I found inside the pistol at the rear of the hammer. Looks like stones ? I have no idea what that brass piece is or if it belongs in there some where....can't find it on the parts sheet. Well, I'm getting ready to run it through the sonic cleaner and, put it back together.

The brass piece looks remarkably like the anvil, out of a primer.
It does not belong in there.

All done tear down and, cleanup, parts inspection, etc. Well, the problem still persists. I do find it odd that if I remove the magazine and, rack the slide the hammer will not drop in either safety on or off. If I install the
magazine and, select safe (deck mode) I can pull the trigger 3 or 4 times with no hammer fall then, all of a sudden bang, hammer engages. I then try to re-engage the de-cocker and, it still causes the hammer to fall unless I remove the magazine. I'll tell you, I'm at a loss. Every thing in this pistol looks good comparing it to a other pistols I own. I'm getting ready to throw in the towel.

I would suspect the magazine may be the problem. If the magazine is contacting (rubbing) the interior of the drawbar, this can have an affect on the position of the disconnector during the drills you describe. Are there any signs (shiny spots) on the exterior surface of the magazine that would indicate any possible contact with the drawbar?
Rub marks, if there are any, could be on either side of the magazine between the two markings as shown in the photos. Just another possibility to rule out.

The 3-pointed star thing is definitely a primer anvil, I'd guess the rest of the debris is what is left of a primer cup. The big question is how did this primer get ruptured and into the location where you found it. Yikes!!!!!

Did you take hammer, mainspring, side plate, levers &
springs, trigger bar, disconnector, etc out--everything?
With all the weird bits you already found--and continued oddball
malfunctions---there's a strong possibility there is/are still
some smaller fragments in there, doing Murphy's Work.

I don’t believe anything in your picture was “factory installed” in your gun. If you aren’t comfortable with a complete tear down (beyond field stripping) I would suggest field stripping and removing the stocks, then take a fresh can of carburetor cleaner and with the receiver assembly held upside down, thoroughly sluice out all of the inside. Then repeat on the slide assembly from front and rear. If that gun did suffer a mini-blowup, there may well be actual parts damage inside, but you probably won’t really know how bad it is until all the contaminants are removed and the parts are clean so they can operate as designed.
I’ve been working on my Model 39-2 lately, and the action can be pretty daunting, but it’s really not all that bad if you take your time and watch where everything fits.
Good luck!

Yes there are marks on the left side but, I tried 3 magazines from my 5906 and still have that problem.
I did not do a complete tear down, just a good field strip then it went into a sonic bath (hot) it came out very clean, air dried with compressor. Oiled it well. No luck, guess I'll have to tear it down to a bare frame.

This way, you'll know there are no bits twiddling about
to & fro, wreaking occasional havoc (remind me to tell
ya about some busted catalytic converter core, inside
an ex gf's muffler ), AND you can inspect all the
fiddly bits for damage...this guy's four vids will show you
how to do it all:

Based on your photo, the drawbar and or the magazines may be damaged or bent. I would look closely at the interior of the legs of the drawbar to check for burrs or damage. You should be able to see the shiny contact site on the interior of the drawbar using a magnifier.
Check the magazine release also. It could be pushing on the magazine and causing interference with the drawbar's movement.

Thank you for the replies, Steve912 that video link was very helpful.
I pulled the entire frame apart, inspected everything, nothing seemed out of spec. cleaned all the parts, oiled and reassembled it....had to put my head on the work bench, so frustrating, still that same problem. I refuse to give up, I have to figure this out. What else could cause this ? I'm going to bed, it's getting late and, my mind can't function anymore I'm spent.

You have one other option: Contact S&W via their webpage, open a ticket, get an RMA number and shipping label from them and send it in and let them fix it. They may likely fix it for free or for a nominal charge. If you can't get it working they will.

On an unrelated note, can you imagine how overcharged the rounds fired in this pistol were to dislodge the anvil in a round and lodge it in the hammer area? Someone fired over-charged hand-loads in this I would wager. So hot it broke the anvil out of the bottom of a casing and lodged it in the action.

The 559 was subject to a safety-related recall.

It's always possible your issue could in some way be related to this (assuming your pistol falls in the serial number range of the recall and fails the test).

Not sure that pieces of primer got in there, as a result of firing.
That would be a pretty weird situation!

jsbethel, thank you for that info, this serial number A7562xx drops right in there. I bought this a few months ago and, have no idea what the original owner loaded this with. Guess I'll be calling the Mother Ship.

Well, contacted SW, they without hesitation, sent a RMA. So, I'll pack it up and ship it out to them. I just hope they can fix it and, not try to offer me a new plastic pistol. I guess I'll have some sleepless nights. Thanks for all the help, advice and, general comfort. I appreciate it. Great bunch here.

Thanks for keeping us abreast of this whole process. As a relatively new convert to the world of metal framed S&W autos myself, I’m near the bottom of the learning curve myself, but working hard to catch up. Like you, I hope they don’t try to replace your real gun with a plastic one!
