4006TSW: I waited too long. Where did they go?
I've been planning on a 4006TSW (preferably CHP) for about six months. Something always seem to come up...either Beretta Model 70 I couldn't live without, a new dishwasher, or a car battery that finally gave up its charge.
So the other day when I finally got serious and went looking....POOF! Ain't none around except a semi-silly prices on Gunbroken.
Anyone have any leads on who might be selling. Summit had 'em at a very nice price and that's what I blew. Now if I were a real man do the right thing and just buy the .40 HiPower he's got listed...but $700 is a bit too much for the budget this month.
All suggestions (and a swift boot in the butt for being stupid and waiting) will be appreciated.

They're like cheap surplus Mosins and SKSs - cheap and plentiful until they weren't, I feel the 3rd Gen pistols have gotten that way in general lately. But what do I know, I'm stuck in California where they were never available to begin with despite them being a CHP gun so I'm just desperate to find one even for sale to begin with.

With all the panic buying caused by the pandemic, it makes sense that the 4006tsw CHiP pistols would sell out. They are reliable and cheap for what they are, and if you run out of bullets they make a great club. It seems like they’ve come out in dribs and drabs for the past few years, so maybe there will be another release? I don’t personally know, maybe this is it and now you’ll have to deal with goobers on GB saying $900 obo - “I know what I’ve got!”
I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a flood of used guns when things go back to normal and many of the first time panic buyers sell.

Keep an eye on GunBroker - There are 2 guys that are still posting one at a time - saw a really nice one go Buy It Now for $479 yesterday or day before - but you have to be quick.
Nice one listed now bidding at $505 and a real dog with blue grips about $300 with a BIN of 399 - could have had a nice one BIN for $379 a couple of weeks ago in the flood.

When looking and waiting to pounce it might help your patience a little bit if you keep in mind that these guns, when new, had retail prices that approached $900 and that was $900 twenty-plus years ago. And I’m definitely no expert but were the integral rail 4006 TSW’s even offered for retail sale or was that a product specifically for LE?
Given what I own and what I love (and what I don’t...) I simply couldn’t talk myself in to one of the CHP guns. But that doesn’t mean that these suckers weren’t one of the seriously fantastic deals of the recent past. These were a heckuva buy.
If you really wanted one and you missed your window AND you are slapping yourself because of that... haha sorry, but you should.

Did you actually speak with Mark at Summit? Those pistols have been in and out of stock there with regularity - he might just be waiting on another shipment.

I've seen Mark at Summit mentioned here regularly so it MUST not be against the rules. (?)
Try giving Rob at ibuyitright. 303-279-1023, or go to his site. He's a great guy and it looks like he is still offering some.

I'd hate to be a downer, but I think that the recent ones to hit the market were the last batch that the CHP had to ship out from their armory. They've been in the process of transitioning from the 4006TSW to the M&P40 since 2017 and I very much doubt that there are any 4006TSWs still in service at this point.
I knew that we were scrapping the bottom of the barrel when I got mine a couple months back because the batch I ordered from was in VG condition with some holster wear, all had their grips replaced with brand new Hogue Rubber Grips, only had 1 magazine instead of the usual 3, and came packaged in what appeared to be an irregular factory blue clamshell case which wasn't original to the firearm for $399.
Normally the armory would have replacement grips in supply, and issued guns should always come with the supplied three magazines, so that told me that the batch was likely the very last ones the CHP had left in the armory with broken grips, limited magazines, and no original boxes, ergo the retailer who got them basically outfitted them with some Hogue Grips they had left in stock which obviously weren't moving, then tossed them in some irregular factory hard cases they had sitting around to make them more attractive. Figuring this was most likely the last of them, I ordered one immediately and I'm glad that I did.
There may be a few more left floating around, but I very much doubt that there will be anymore examples of pristine CHP 4006TSWs with 3 magazines hitting the market for $375 anymore, so if you should happen to see any and must have one, then don't miss your chance waiting on a better deal. Keep in mind that 4006TSWs used to go for about $900 new, and that was before the recession, mind you. So if you can get one in decent condition for under $500, then I say get it. Being all Stainless Steel, they clean up nicely, so even if you can't bear the sight of one with a worn finish, you could easily shine it up like new with a Shotchbright pad and some elbow grease.

Thats a shame you missed the boat, I understand life gets in the way... I absolutely love my worked over CHP4006TSW, I actually like it a bit more than my PC .40 tactical which is a very rare PC variant.... if i had to keep one... it would be the CHP, if i ever find another local ill grab it as a back up.

On the bright side, even if all the CHP 4006TSWs have dried up, there are other 3rd Gen LEO trade-ins which come and go frequently, including ones which are even rarer with their own unique markings.
For example, last I heard West Virginia State Police was still carrying a unique variant of the 4566TSW with an integrated rail and a melonite hardcoat finish, which they're in the process of transitioning to G17s, so it wouldn't surprise me if those hit the market sooner or later.

See this thread:
Seemingly Endless 4006 CHP Supply
The seemingly endless supply lasted about six weeks.

Who wouldn't? Unfortunately, there won't be nearly as many available as the CHP 4006TSWs (maybe 10%) seeing as WVSP only has some 700 sworn officers, so they'll probably go for more and be available for far less time.

They’re not dried up yet, but getting close. If you get one with blue grips. Those were simmunition guns. The nice thing is the barrels are like new and a new recoil spring.

I believe the CHP guns were the only ones with integral rail - other TSW with rail were riveted on below frame - someone correct me if I an wrong - PS I would love to be wrong here.

And not MIM for period correctness.
I actually thought about doing that to mine since now I have so many forged and MIM spurred hammers. (I’ve corrected all my compacts that I put spurred hammers in. I was going through a “weird” time.)

This is why I also jumped on the 4046tsw brinks trade ins. The one I got was even better then the advertised photo. The people I bought it from last year had 5 pack 4000 series mags for 59 shipped and I ended up buying 2 lots from them but even the mags are now getting hit or miss and prices are rising to 5900 levels

Nope, there are other 3rd Gens with integral rails, but not many. After the California Highway Patrol special ordered their 4006TSWs with an integral rail, Smith & Wesson began offering 3rd Gens with integral rails in their catalog to Police Departments, and a few PDs ordered some.
As previously mentioned, the West Virginia State Police special ordered their own unique variant of the 4566TSW with an integrated rail and a melonite hardcoat finish.

WVSP 4566TSW
I believe it is one of about 30-35 over runs from the original contract.
If you search hard enough there are many more pictures of this pistol here on the board.

You cannot hesitate on any third generations S&W's these days. If you see what you want, you better get out the credit card and buy it. Even four months ago, they would sit around for at least a while. Collector's Firearms in Houston now has twice as many Lugers as Smith semi automatics - including M&Ps. It used to have display cases of S&W's - no more. I hear Brinks is selling off their S&W 40 caliber third gens. When I saw the CHP 4006 TSW on CDNN for $399 that was too good to pass up.

Fresno County ordered the 4566TSWs too and I think transitioned out of them to M&P45s, haven't seen a picture of one of those yet though. Wish some departments had ordered the 5906TSWs but those only seem to exist as factory examples.

Fresno Co Sheriff used a large number of 4506s. A few years ago there were tons of them on GB. It is possible, and likely, that they may have e utilized the 4566 for detectives and administrators. My agency general issued the 4566 and issued the 4516 to detective and administrative personnel.

I bought my first 4006 ( actually, 3 firsts: first S&W auto, first .40, and first 4006) at a pawnshop for 350 bucks, I think. I fell head over heels in love with it. Soon after there was a thread here about the TSW 4006 and I ordered one. Oh man, I am soooooo glad I got it! Both are in pristine condition and feel great in the hand and shoot like a dream. These pistols got me on the .40 bandwagon.

I picked up 2 of the TSW’s with the riveted rails from Kings Firearms online. I like the looks of these better than the CHP models. Heavy spuds when you’ve gotten used to polymer.
I then picked up a quantity of mags from ibuyitright. Six with red base pads just for practice. 🙂

Many thanks to all who posted. I'm gonna be better late than never thanks to a member here. We're in the process and I'm really looking forward to getting it. It may well be the last gun I buy, but it will be the best,as I'm purchasing it in memory of my friend, A CHiP who passed away in January and who's memoirs I'm currently editing. I miss that guy a lot.

Out of curiosity, do the first 3 letters of the serial number always represent a government agency, similar to what CHP stands for?
(I saw one labeled BDJ5xxx)

Typically, no.
Occasionally, a large agency purchase will request a "unique" serial number prefix, but the vast majority have no specific meaning.

The one I saw at Gander Outdoors was not the CHP variety 4006TSW, fwiw. I wish the image was better, it's pretty grainy. It does show an adjustable rear site, interesting. I know Novak made them but didn't know if they were even available on the TSW's, at least from the factory.

Many, many thanks to all who posted here. I've got one in the works! A member here offered me a very square deal and I jumped on it. I should have it in state in about a week, then have to wait 10 days for WA state to do its own background check as they no longer use the FBI. (Don't ask, it's a long ****** story.)
(And yes, pics when I finally get my mitts on it.)

Redcoat3340, congratulations on getting a CHP 4006 TSW sent behind enemy lines here in Washington.
Please do let us know when the memoirs of that CHP officer have been published. I'm sure many of us on the forum would enjoy reading them.
