Default 1006 Aftermarket Barrels

Looking up information on my 1006 I found that there used to be a number of aftermarket barrels made for them. Namely, Bar-Sto conversion .40 and 9x25mm Dillon ones. With how outmoded these pistols have become I wouldn't expect them to still be in production but I would at least be interested in a .40 barrel to be able to swap my gun into an ersatz single stack 4006 whenever I want. Are any of these still floating around somewhere?

When it comes to just aftermarket barrels, looking at Bar-Sto's website it seems they still list this one. Are there any functional differences between this and an OEM barrel and do they usually require handfitting? I'd like to be able to essentially keep a spare barrel on hand in case I ever end up shooting mine out.

Just because it is not on their website does not mean they won't make one for you

Give them a call, you might be surprised.

If you do not believe you are capable of fitting a barrel, tell them you want a drop in

If all you want is a spare for when you shoot out the factory barrel, just buy a used factory barrel off eBay.

Or you can just shoot the .40 out of a 10mm barrel. I know it isn't recommended, and the accuracy will suffer, but it does work.

I did email them but looking at their business hours it looks like they probably won't get back to me until Monday. An OEM barrel is a bit more than what's still listed on Bar-Sto's site so if it's actually better I could drop that in and preserve my factory barrel.

That occurred to me too but I'm still pretty leery about doing that in any gun chambered in 10mm. I'd rather play it safe with a gun that's been long out of production and very difficult to find a replacement for.

Semi-auto pistol cartridges head space on the case mouth. When a 40 S&W round is chambered in a 10mm, it is the extractor that holds the head space. This leads to variable head spacing and combined with the extra free bore you can get poor accuracy. Also, extractors are designed to extract the cartridge, they are not designed to prevent the cartridge from dropping into a long chamber during firing. Firing 40 S&W in a 10mm places additional stress on the extractor hook. I'd reserve shooting 40 S&W in a 10mm barrel for emergencies, I would not make it a practice, but that's just me and my desire to not break a S&W extractor.

Curious, how many rounds do you shoot it, or plan to shoot it? I rarely read or hear stories of people shooting out their barrels.

Even if you could, would a .40 magazine take 10mm rounds? Usually 10/45 are larger frames, and 40/9/357 sig are "medium" frames. With 1911 pistols, usually a 10mm version uses a 10mm magazine for 40 and 357 also.

How does BMCM get 10mm into a converted CS40 magazine?

Thanks for raining on my parade j/k. I might have some 10mm brass laying around but im sure the master will enliven us with his wisdom before then. Would be nice to have a convertible barrel for my 4046tsw.

You might be able to fit a barrel, but the firearm will never work.

The magazines are too short to hold 10MM Auto ammunition

The rest of the firearms geometry iws not set up for a cartridge that long

I'm just asking the question. But it is because of all this that there is the huge question why S&W doesn't just get of their collective *** and make a S&W M&P 10 pistol on the .45 platform. Glock, Springfield, Sig and numerous 1911 makers have been doing it for a while. Barrel, recoil assembly and magazines. Done.

The 4013/4014/4053/4054 firearms and the CS40s were all built to be 10MM Auto firearms.

The magazines are all 10MM Auto in length with a spacer at the back to accommodate 40 S&W.

All you have to do is remove the spacer and you have a 10MM Auto magazine.

On the CS40 magazine there are 4 spot welds on the sides of the mag holding the spacer in place. Break them out with a screwdriver, make sure it is smooth and that is all you really have to do. If it is not a smooth break, you need to sand it down

Some folks will put in a 10MM Auto follower to prevent tipping, but in almost a decade of shooting these conversion, I have not had a round tip in the magazine

You can also use the 10xx magazines in any of the pistols with a tiny bit of modification

Probably 100-200 a month. I'm planning on keeping and using this gun for a very long time though, and it already looked like it was pretty far into being 'shooter grade' when I picked it up so I don't know how much the last owner fired it but it definitely wasn't a safe queen.

Nope.

Too many differences.

1006 barrel is 5" long, 4006/TSW barrel is 4" long.

1006 barrel has a much larger and thicker chamber area and won't fit in a 4006 size slide.

Also, different angles on the barrel unlocking lugs.

Not to mention 4006 size grip frame is not long enough for a 10mm length round.

Single stack 40s and CS models were built on the 45 frame, just like the 10mm models, and that's why they can accommodate the longer rounds.

John

Some people drill out the crimp-in dimples in the mag's body but the spacer comes out pretty easily with just a chisel & some lite filing.

If you install a 1006 follower in a 1013 magazine you need to bevel the top edges ("D") of the 1006 follower, because the mouth of a 1006 mag is wider than a 4013's, to allow it to go fully up.
