OK so I have some extra cash and visited a local shop and spot a 1006 with 3 mags for $425. Looked to be in good shape. I don’t have any 10mms(yet) and don’t really need a different caliber in my safe, but It looks cool!

I would have bought that Model 1006 without a magazine for $425!!!!! If it has 3 factory mags, consider you will be hard pressed to find a factory S&W 10mm magazine for less than $80, so any way you cut it that is a smoking deal!

That's an unbelievably good deal for one, I paid over twice that for mine + the California tax and it only came with one magazine (which are at best $60 each).

It would be in my safe already at that price if it fired and had no rust.

Need someone to stop by the store and examine it for you?

I stopped back and looked it over. On closer examination there is wear on the sharp edges of the slide and bright marks in the matte finish. I’m undecided.

It's stainless steel, so finish wear shouldn't be a factor at all because you can easily refinish it yourself at home however you like.

Holds no bearing on the gun itself... with the slide fully locked put your finger on or in the barrel and try and move it.... if nothing then you are rocking! Ide be happy to call and sort this out for you!?

Unless something's very wrong mechanically, that's a great deal. Finish wear? Eh, it'll get that eventually anyway. Although I do have to wonder if the shop knows something we don't, at that price. OTOH, you could sell the mags, and probably get the rest of the price for parts. Just thinkin' out loud.

A 1006 sold for under 500 bucks makes me think there's something REALLY wrong here. Dry cycle and fire the gun, if it seems okay, I'd get it. The finish could be restored and I think S&W offers that as a pay-for-service. Unless the frame is cracked or the barrel is bulged such you cannot draw the slide all the way back, I'd pay the money and get it. It can be restored so long as there's no irreversible damage to the parts.

I don’t think a shop can sell a gun with major issues(such as a bulged barrel or cracked frame) due to liability. With that being said, it could slip through the cracks. I would do a function check and give it a good visual inspection. If it’s just cosmetic, that’s one heck of a price. Like others have said, almost too good to be true.

A shop can sell anything, even a broken firearm as a "U Fix Em." I've seen it myself, they're sold as parts guns. Also, in regards to used firearms, the principal of Caveat Emptor reigns supreme. Yes, they can sell garbage guns, its up to you the buyer to know what youre getting into.

So whats the result here Acorn? I'm chomping at the bit!

As others have mentioned, the spare mags are worth ~ $75-$80 each so it sounds like the gun is being offered at about a 70% off sale. If it checks out, buy it.

Many find the non-adjustable sights more appealing and I think they are fewer than the adjustable sight models and worth even more.

Here’s my adjustable sight 1006 along with my 610ND.

Honestly, since when did a cheap bead-blasted finish become so desirable that it's worth passing up a crazy good deal over?

If you aren't going to take advantage of this then the least you can do is provide the name/number of the gunshop so that one of the many guys here who would jump at this deal can take advantage of it.

I bought one at a pawn shop back in January. It was nowhere near as good a deal as the 1006 you may have let slip by. It was scuffed-up, but that didn't matter... Scotch-Brite made it look a whole lot better.

OK you guys convinced me. The shop opens at 10 Eastern. I’ll be there at 9:58. If it’s still there (it was there yesterday at 1)and checks out, I’ll buy it.
Who know maybe I’ll flip it if I don’t like it, after I buy dies, etc.
I really had no idea the $$$ these bring. I thought it was just a Gen 3 in 10mm.
Why are they so pricey? Whats the draw?

Well, they weren't in production for very long. Basically once Smith & Wesson went all in with the .40 S&W cartridge they dropped the 10XX Series completely in favor of the 40XX. Plus most of the folks who own them really like them and speak very highly of them, so they don't show up very option, and when they do, they aren't cheap.

I’m looking it as a blessing in disguise. I’d have to buy dies, shell holder, bullets and or mold, sizer dies etc. Then I’d have sent it somewhere to be refinished and on and on. Oh well! I can’t buy them all.

A little late to the party, but I picked up a 1006 today from a buddy who wasn’t looking to sell it - it took $1100 to convince him otherwise. Got two white follower mags with it. I would have been happier to pay $425, but I was tired of looking so I coughed up the cash. Now I can scratch the 1006 off my list and concentrate on other guns.

Looks like you snagged an early model. Congrats! ... I prefer the fixed Novak sights to the factory adjustables.

Be advised that good-to-VG condition factory 10XX-series mags are selling north of $75, and the ones that are allegedly still NIB - if you can find them - are well north of $100.

Too bad about that disfiguring ambidextrous safety scar. But, they didn’t come any other way. The old, smooth sided Second Generation models could be made to look most elegant by installing a cleaned-up 745 safety in place of the ambidextrous one.

Uhhhh, you can use a 2nd Gen non-ambi decocker on any 3rd Gen that uses an OEM ambi safety too.

The 745 safety choice was a curious one since the 745 never had the decocker feature, I’m curious if the safety drum is cut the same and will activate the hammer drop.

Mea culpa, I may have spoken too soon. The only 2nd Gen safety/decock levers that I have swapped around have been 9/40, so perhaps the .45/10 is a different part or of different dimensions.

Meanwhile, the 645 pictured above is interesting and very attractive. Is there a discussion on that pistol specifically? Or in lieu of that:

—is the finish standard/original, is it photo shading giving it the darker hue? Looks fantastic.

—the trigger guard... altered?

—the front sight... dovetailed?

—the target, nice group for sure but what was the distance? Was this from a rest?

- The 645 came stock with brush finished sides. This light absorbing finish resulted from sandblasting using 150 psi and No. 80 Garnet sand.

- I ground the obnoxious finger rest off the trigger guard. Did the same thing to an H&K P7. I really dislike hooked finger rests on trigger guards; they get caught on things and their use can actually be a detriment to good shooter performance.

- The front sight is a Wilson Combat white dot, which seemed like a good idea at the time (late 1990s). But now, given a second chance, it would be a tall Novak white dot. The Wilson dimensioned dovetail was cut after the original ramp front was ground off. The rear sight is an excellent MMC adjustable, unfortunately long discontinued.

- The target was shot standing, two handed, at 50 feet. The Bar-Sto match-grade barrel, fantastic sight picture, Third Generation guts and three pound trigger spring were most helpful. The load used was a very successful 50 yard Bullseye target load dating back to the 1950s (maybe even earlier), updated using Missouri Bullet Company Bullseye #1 .452” bullets instead of H&G 68s.



Here’s a late 1980s vintage Colt stainless steel GM 45 with the same finish, using the same load at the same distance, but with fixed Novak sights:



I suppose I could substitute a Novak adjustable rear sight to lower the POI. But, it doesn’t seem worth the effort.

I have spent about three hours in the last couple of days looking for the Norma box that I saw in my basement about six months ago. I thought it would make a nice photo prop and I was right. I haven't found mine yet. When the Delta Elite was first released I drove 75 miles to buy one. The only ammo available was the Norma 200 grain FMJ. I bought two boxes.

Let me help you out here........i picked up a cache of Norma several years back but fortunately I remembered where I put them.

Well I haven't found the cartridge box yet but I did find something else interesting today while I was rummaging through the loading shed. A box of original Norma component bullets for 10mm. Also have a hundred or so Norma cases that I found at a local shop. Top that case off with AA#9, brush it off level with the case mouth and stick one of those Norma 170s in it. Should just about duplicate the Norma factory 170 gr load.

Tried uploading images twice, including once flipping them before uploading. Oh well, you get the idea.

Would the adjustable sights on your 610 fit on your 1006 with the adjustable sights?

I don’t think they’re interchangeable. Completely different setup, IIRC. I can’t compare them because I sold my 1006 several weeks ago and picked up a VSP 1026 with fixed sights.
