Default 39-2

I am new to this side of the forum...I spend most of my time in the 1980-present revolver section, but I came across a model 39-2 and I am hoping to get some pricing advice on it.

It looks like a fairly clean copy to me.

See photo below. Thank you in advance.

Nice condition 39-2.....in Montana it would be about a $400-450 dollar gun if it had the box etc.

In Texas too. Around $400-$425 w/o the box.

From the Sn. appears to be a 1973-74 era mod-39-2. One pic makes it difficult to ascertain condition. For me, $590 is high end on retail. You stated you are a rev. guy. Before you jump to the dark side, do some research.

Many were made and with most guns condition is everything. A shooter with no box is a good gun and will bring years of service but the price is as stated above in most areas...some exceptions.
BUT...a LNIB example could almost double the price to the right buyer. They are only LNIB once and not being made any more.

I have 4 39-2's, 2 nickle and 2 blue. One of each is LNIB but I don't shoot them so they have no application outside of pride of ownership. The blue shooter on the other hand goes to the range regularly and has been a joy to have. The DA pull isn't as nice as my 3rd gens (not really close) but the SA pull and reset can't be beat! Very tight groups and 100% reliable with standard load ball ammo in any of the regular grain weights of 115, 124 or 147. They also feel very good in the hand.

Smooth shooting and great looking is a good package. I suggest you give it a try as they aren't very expensive. New recoil spring and you should be good to go. Let us know what you decide! All threads need pics...

$590 without box, papers, and in used condition is a Gunjoker price. I'd say $400-$450 would be reasonable.

That looks to me to be a $400 gun around here (Virginia). Mine is a 1977, came with original box, docs, tools but did NOT have the spare magazine that these guns usually shipped with (my understanding). A exact correct mag (thin floorplate, S&W logo, black follower) cost me another $53.00 off of flea-bay so my package ended up around $425 all said and done.

I do admit they are very nice shooters, quite accurate, a pleasure to shoot, no felt recoil to speak of, but I spent too much non-shooting range time, loading that 1 mag, so definitely need the extra mag.

The other thing is the lube during maintenance. They don't like wet, and they don't like dry is what I've heard, and can now verify....so just minimal amounts of your quality gun oil on the rail/slide....kinda like a Glock.

That price tag is too high unless you are in California...those prices seem to be 15 to 25% higher than the rest of the country it seems. I would use the finish wear around the trigger guard, the "shiny" rail drags at the muzzle end, a little denting on the grips, the lack of a spare factory mag as negotiating starters and maybe offer $375 cash, be prepared to go up to maybe $450 but I wouldn't get any further out there, unless the owner does have the box, docs, tools and extra factory mag stashed somewhere. I do not usually use the box, docs, tools (or lack thereof) as any kind of negotiating point because most LGS either don't know the worth of these items, or they do and have already jumped in a fairly healthy premium. If they don't know then why tip them off?

The other thing that might work to lower the price is ask how long they have had it...some of the LGS here will drop the price (high to begin with) on used guns about 10% every 30 days, after 60 days from when they acquired it, until the price they will accept is about 60 to 70% of the ticket. They don't change the ticket at all (hoping somebodies drool will impulse buy), but if you ask you never know...after all it is unsold inventory to them, not a treasure, and to pay the bills they need to move inventory.

From what I was seeing, I thought it was priced too high, but wanted some expert opinion. Thank you for confirming what I was thinking.

The shop that has this is unlikely to reduce his price because he almost out of guns and doesn't see his availability increasing any time soon. Of course, because of that I'm not likely to bring it home any time soon.

Thanks, again.

I paid $200 for mine with a serial number close to yours, A195xxx. But...
that was 40 years ago. $590 seems a bit high, but all firearms are selling at a premium price now due to the covid-19. Go ahead and get it if you want it. It might be a long while before prices come back down. And in a year or two from now, it will be long paid for and the price won't matter any more.

As a follow up comment on prices I think you can always do better on a local deal if you can find it. The only issue there is to find the one you want at the price you want in the hands of someone local. I'm in the midwest and while there are plenty of guns around it is slim pickings for the older stuff. I haven't seen a 39 listed local for a couple of years. This can influence what a person will pay when they find that "one".

Example: I have a LNIB 3913LS. Have been on the lookout for a 3913NL to go with it. Seen a couple over time but none local. Passed on the couple I did see as they weren't the right one. Finally ran across the "one" I wanted and paid $600 plus fees. Maybe a little more than the value some would place on it but it was worth it to me and I am very happy.

The only person you have to satisfy is yourself. Do your homework to know the value's involved so you don't get taken then go after what suits you. A few bucks one way or another are soon forgotten when you are 100% satisfied with your purchase. I certainly am...

Correction on my 39-2. I checked my FFL log books, and see where I told you wrong...I paid $450 OTD for my "package" and another $53 for the factory original correct magazine off of flea-bay so my complete package ran me $503.

I believe Ihump1961 is spot on when he says, if you see the one you want a few bucks either way is not going to make a big deal because these are not made anymore, and you just don't see them come around locally (the only way I buy too) very often.

Add to this the fact with this covid stuff these days, all of my local LGS just don't have any guns to sell, new plastic or old used guns. I saw last week a beater Model 10, 4" looked like old police trade in, finish pretty well gone, don't know about timing and lockup. It went for $550 and with background check and tax I'm sure the guy paid around $625.....but the only revolver up for instant grabs at that shop.

Looking over my gun pics I ran across where I put my Model 39-2 up against my favorite 9mm, the Browning Hi-Power just a year ago yesterday. As I said....very accurate at 10 yards, but you really need at least 2 mags to stay up with the double stack BHP.

I would say all in all....go back and see if that 39-2 is even still there and grab it if you can. I see you are in North Carolina. That means you are too close to Mike (GM...) who is one of the top dogs (read "hoarder") in the Model 39's.

Best of luck in whatever you decide.

Given the recent uptick in prices, I would expect to pay $500 here for just the gun and a magazine and as said above up to twice that with a box, papers and extra magazine..

The economic principle of supply and demand. Supply is limited and demand is currently very high, so prices naturally seek the balance point of the maximum which demand will support.

Paid $570 for LNIB on GB recently - Received a different $400 gun with blueing worn thru ahead of trigger guard and cruddy non matching box. Right side of gun is nice but I hate left side with blueing damaged. Consensus here from multiple gun shops is $400 to $450 tops. Fraud Claim pending with GB.

Agreed. A 50 years old 39-2 LNIB doesn't come around very often and only a handful of people would be interested. I am one of those that is interested and I bought it. Consider the price of the semi, add in its original box, with the paperwork, tools, and the extra mag, it all adds up to a fair price for me.

In SEPA(South Eastern Pennsylvania)...... mint condition, original mag(Only 1), original box, papers and tools.

Don't ask!!!

But for real, north of $500. They seem to be creeping up a bit in $$ but are still a steal for such a nice firearm.

Regards,

Kobsw

SEPA= SouthEast Pennsylvania. (often abreviated as Pa.).

Mint.... ?... I am assuming it describes the pistol as "Mint" condition, simply lacking the correct punctuation.

Here is my 639 in a Strong H300-434 and G+G B733-4006. Most holsters for the 5906 will accommodate the 39 with no problem.

Yes, That's the place... I'm a little closer to philly though.

I should have used a , between SEPA and mint.....

Correction added...thx for pointing it out.

... but I wouldn’t try carrying it into The Mint!

Here in the other Commonwealth, we talk about NoVA and CenVA, so I understood SEPA immediately. Is it an example of some kind of Commonwealth-speak?

You have put your finger on the problem of our times! Gone are the days when you could go into your LGS and pick a card (or 2 or 6) off the rack with a brand new factory mag at what today would be considered a giveaway price. If you can find any factory mag for $35 or less, grab it! I don’t remember seeing nickel mags for sale, but I’ve been looking for stainless lately for my 639 Franken-Smith project and they ain’t cheap (nor easily found!)

Regards,
Froggie

PS I’m told that the later mags for guns like the 3906 will work and even give you an extra round in each, but I guess you probably want period mags??

Gunbroker or eBay, they turn up frequently. Stay away from ProMag and Triple K mags.

I just got back from the range. The 39-2 did fine withe the 2 smith mags it came with, one had a black plastic follower, the other the split Steel follower. Also a promag wouldn't feed standard ball from the first round.are those people just dumb??
I think I like it more than my 5906, it feels better in my hand.

As for don,t know how many cycles the recoil spring has on it should I replace it, and if so what pound spring, factory or stronger??
Thanks

ProMag's are great for practicing jammed gun clearing drills, but nothing else in my opinion.

Just for the record, did the 39-2s with the optional nickel finish come with nickel plated or blue magazines (or different ones at different times?)

I have two nickel 39-2's but only one in the box. As you can see the mags are not blued but but not nickel either...just not blued. One is matte and the other is a bit shinier...not sure why. I can't speak for what might be out there but mine are as you see them for the all nickel version. My other one has the blued controls and blued magazines. The grip panels pictured are not the originals...those are in the box. I put this darker pair on for reasons I can't recall!

The magazine on the left appears to be stainless steel, the one on the right looks to be plated in some form of nickel, possibly NP3 or similar finish.

All of this suggests to me that S&W never really standardized on their nickel plated 39-2 models. Blued mags and controls on some? Stainless mags? It seems like the whole nickel and Model 39-2 thing was always a work in progress. I’m glad to see the data base that is being assembled for the nickel guns, but it seems like the more info I see assembled, the more confusing it gets!

I think that is definitely your answer^^^

I have never owned a nickel 39-2 but I’ve seen oh so many. If you see enough of them, you’ll see that some have black control and some have nickel controls. Most came in the silver box... and I think they eventually ran out of the silver box so some didn’t. So with magazines, same thing.

I don’t think there has ever been any genuine plan that S&W used, it was the same as they’ve always been known for: use up what we have and if we get new/different parts, start using them.

I'm a revolver guy too, but i do have a few semis. My 39-2 is among the best in my corral.

I go to gun shows frequently and rarely see a good 39-2...or evan ANY at all good or bad.

If I wanted one now, knowing what i know, if I saw a good one I would snatch it up in short order, probably going as high as 600.

With the high demand and low supply right now, another chance may never come up.

S&W did have a genuine plan and they stuck to it...build guns and get them out the door so we can send an invoice and get paid. So we get a pay check. I have/had several NIB mod-39 with extra wrapped extra mags. I have no idea if that mag was originally shipped with the gun or not. Boxes, what ever was in the shipping dept. Same with finish config of controls. I started that nic 39 data list to record what was out there.
Draw your own conclusions. Mike

GypsumJim, 100% sincere apologies if this offends you in ANY manner, it is not my intention.

The truth and the reality needs to trump the feel and the perception. What you just said might lead others to believe the 39-2 is scarce or the supply is dwindling. Your luck and experience in finding a 39-2 is not for me to question but your report isn’t an accurate reflection of the market.

On Gunbroker and buyable right now are at bare minimum THIRTY of them. This is a pistol that went out of production almost 40 years ago.

The 39-2 isn’t scarce. Has anyone ever seen or owned the Model 745? Those aren’t easy to find all the time but you can snag ‘em. I have two (love them.) I use the 745 as an example today because Roy Jinks has published approximate production numbers. Across all three 745 variants, about 15,000 were made.

There were 23 times as many 39-2 pistols made at 347,000+.

Mr. Sevens, granted the 745 is a scarce bird! And darn nice shooter. Just does not have the same appeal and feel as a 1954 to 1982 pre or 39-2.
Like the one Dad had. Its a good entry level auto in a common caliber.
No sincere apology because there was no insult. Best and stay safe. Mike

I had successfully convinced myself I didn’t need a S&W semi-auto until I inherited this 39-2 I had found for Dad and begun to personalize for him. Like a case of poison ivy, they kinda creep up on you and get a good hold.

That being said, this is a 60 year old design at its base, and even the later variations have been out of production for about 30 years... it’s a classic old design, but an old design nonetheless. I’ve come to the game late, but I’m a serious convert. To keep the heirloom 39-2 safe I built a semi-custom 639 for “every day” use. I guess that speaks for itself.

I only name-dropped the 745 because it’s production volume of 15,000 versus the 347,000 examples of the 39-2 was merely a way to affirm my point.

The 39-2 is not scarce, not hard to find, it is the antithesis of rare and the simple fact that they quit making them in 1982 doesn’t mean that they are getting harder to find.

Consider that many older folks that love and own the 39-2 are selling off their collections or, *gulp* their heirs are doing exactly that.

It’s going to be a long time before 39-2 pistols are scarce.

Most holsters marketed for a basic Colt 1911 fit the 39-2 reasonably well.

The Safariland 19L is probably a very good choice for leather OWB carry of any of the 39-class guns.

S&W made a ton of Model 39's and 39-2's, but I think the scarcity is due to people not wanting to sell them. They are really nice 9x19mm pistols.
