Ammo for M41?
I've got some 1080 fps Federal Match ammo but would like to use up some
1235 fps target/plinking CCI.
Seems I heard/read somewhere that higher velocity ammo is detrimental to the S&W M41.
Any truth to it?

The model 41 and 46 were built around the Remington sv target ammo. Sv CCI also works well.
I would avoid the hv and mini mag stuff in the 41.

The best ammo I've found for it is CCI standard velocity. Consistent, reliable and super accurate!

CCI standard velocity is what is usually recommended but my M41 has about a 2% to 3% failure rate with it. Replacing the extractor, recoil spring, etc. did not help.
So I shoot nothing but MiniMags through it now which are very reliable but not quite as accurate. Still very accurate but not quite as accurate as the standard velocity stuff. I have to be shooting from a rest to tell the difference. No damage so far but I bought a buffer after reading about potential problems. The recoil buffer is a piece of plastic that stops the slide before the trigger guard does. The one I bought has been discontinued ( Buffer Technologies Recoil Buffer S&W 41 Polyurethane ) but others might make similar products.
The manual says nothing about standard velocity only. And a lot of people that do not spend time on forums happily shoot any type of 22 they want through the gun without any problems.
If your M41 is reliable with CCI standard velocity and you can find it that's the ammo to use. It's accurate in most guns and reasonably priced. But I would go ahead and shoot up the other stuff you have too. Its like shooting +P ammo in other guns. You may have problems if you shoot cases upon cases a year of it but a few bricks isn't going to hurt anything. The M41 is not some delicate thing that will instantly fall apart from an extra150 fps.
A lot of the only use standard velocity advice comes from people that use their M41 as a competition gun. They will not accept any loss of accuracy and can shoot many thousands of rounds a year through their pistols. Maybe 60,000 rounds from now I might have problems from shooting the MiniMags but so far so good. And if the gun breaks I am confident S&W will fix it.
Shoot what you have and enjoy your 41.

I am using ammo from my third case (5K rounds per case) of CCI Blazer. Both of my M41 pistols date from the mid-1980's. Blazers are more accurate than I am.

I have a M41 that I bought new in 1980. It always had FTF/FTE issues with SV ammo, so I started shooting HV, problem solved! For years my ammo of choice was Super X HV 40 gr, but the last 10 yrs or so I have used Blazer 40 gr. After 40 yrs of shooting HV ammo, I have NOT replaced a single part except the recoil spring.
I have no idea how many rounds fired in the 40 years, but it has been a LOT, I buy ammo a case at a time. The old pistol is not a safe queen, it's not pretty, but it is my go to fun to shoot pistol.

When ammo becomes available again I am going to try some Blazer. The MiniMags work well but are not cheap.
BTW, when I say MiniMags I am referring to the 40 grain round nose variety. My 41 has occasional issues with any type of HP bullet.

My 41’s were ok with CCI SV most of the year but had a fte occasionally in cold weather. I switched to Eley CMP bulk and have had no problems. As accurate as CCI SV and the higher velocity of 1070 vs 1025 makes a difference in reliability, at least in my pistols.

22 LR Velocity
On the ammo boxes I've bought by different manufacturers, the velocity listed has been out of rifles with 18" to 20" barrels. I have not seen velocities listed when fired from pistols or revolvers. One could believe that the supersonic velocities fired from rifles would drop to sub-sonic when fired from 5" to 7-1/2" handguns.
In my M41 pistols, the distance the ejected brass flies is the same for CCI Blazer or Ely match pistol (at $12 per box, I didn't buy it, it was a match prize of 1 brick). Within my abilities, the Ely match and CCI Blazer had the same impact point at 25 or 50 yards.

I have 8 M41’s and shoot SV 40 grain exclusively in them. There are a number of manufacturers of the SV ammo including CCI, Aguila, Ely, federal.

Mine seems to like everything but I shoot CCI SV as it is more than accurate enough when I shoot off hand at 25 yards. From a rest SK standard velocity is a bit more accurate. Some 41's are fussy and some are not.
