That is an early production 5906 with the optional fully adjustable rear sight.

SKU 104006 produced 1989-1991 with early trigger guard and adjustable sights. Most likely 1989-1990 production.

My TET prefix 3904 is a 1990. It’s a different early one with the factory Novak’s.
I know it’s not a 5906 but the year should be the same.
Nice 5906 you got. Many, (most,) here don’t like that style adjustable rear sights, AND that style trigger guard, but I sure do.

Most likely mid year 1990, possibly May/Jun time frame.

Okay, I have to ask, why does the frame look smaller than my 5906?

Because it's more rounded off around the edges.
Older models with the squared off trigger guard were just plain blockier, which leads to the optical illusion of being larger in size because you can't see around the edges like you can on a newer model with the edges more rounded off.

I see it. I think you said it backwards but the point is made. To me that older one looks smaller but I can see how the trigger guard creates that appearance. Very interesting!

My new buddy : 5906
I think it’s the angles of the photographs that make the old model appear smaller.

That would be the correct answer.

It looks like the square trigger guard also has more room for gloves in winter, which might have been a good feature for some LEOs.

Exactly!
The "Winter Trigger Guard" was a feature designed to accommodate gloved hands and attract military contracts.
Too bad it made the pistols look "odd".

Mine is a 1989 production with fixed sights. TCZ prefix.
Great shooting gun, but a bit heavy for carry. Not that I need a 15+1 double stack these days. That said, it's a very nice range gun.

It's an optical delusion.

It does not seem odd any more compared to some modern guns... compare to a CZ-P10 trigger guard and the amount of room, and that gun is getting rave reviews.
As for the "wings" on either side of the adjustable sight, I assume those are supposed to protect the sight blade. I have one S&W revolver with a badly dinged sight blade already and I've seen others. Assuming you want an adjustable sight, you would be happy with that. LEOs bang on doors and car doors with their guns, and they sometimes roll around on the ground while trying to put the cuffs on someone... I on the other hand put my guns on a nice clean towel when I set them down at the range, and wipe them off with a nice clean silicone rag... LOL
None of the people these were intended for were worried about what they would look like when their gun was finally "ready for its closeup" on the internet.

Those wings beside the rear sight always remind me of the tail fins on a ‘57 Chevy. Of course, the design had a well respected history when S&W started using it... witness the 1917 Enfield. Protecting the rear sight in hard usage has its advantages!

The S&W adjustable rear sight with those protective ears came from their experience building pistols for USN Seals.

I always regret that when the local PD here went from 5906 to Glock that I didn't pick one up.
