Default Speaking of the 10mm

I have the 610 revolver and am considering getting a 10mm auto.
Other than the Glock (too large for my hands in this caliber) , which one(s) can you all recommend current production or not in production?

I have the Ruger SR1911 in 10mm. Love it. Great shooter. Reasonably priced also.

Thanks guys, how is magazine availability on the 10 series Smiths. Do they all use the same magazine?

How about 10mm 1911 mags? Does any one other than Ruger make a quality mag that will work with it?

The 10XX do use the same mags, but they are no longer being produced...and any that can be found are not cheap.

Wilson Combat makes 9 round 10mm 1911 mags.

Smith mags can be built from new parts available from Midway and Numrich for about $60-65 give or take.

Should be numerous threads here about it.

Once I bought a Sig 220 SAO in 10mm, I knew I had the best.

Not counting the Glock, there must be over 100 different auto-loaders chambered for the 10MM Auto cartridge currently in production

The various 1911 makers easily account for 50 or more variations currently in production. Single stacks or double stacks. Full size, commanders, compacts or even long slides. Then you have the custom builds

All of the CZ clone variations from Tangfolio

There are other striker fired plastic guns beside Glock, there is the XD

You can even get single shot barrels for the Thompson Center pistols

Then going to the out of production stuff, there are obviously the Smith & Wesson family

One of my favorites is this 20+ year old 7" long slide

Then for the lucky ones there are the Bren Tens.

Or if you like big and beefy, there is the LAR Grizzly

If you want to put 30 rounds of 10MM Auto ammunition on target in about 2 seconds, there is the HK MP5/10, though it is hard to come by, it is still in production. This one is sitting with a 10MM Auto SIG P220

I personally find the Sig 220 the best 10mm on the market. Lipsey has the hot colors...black nitron w adjustable rear and fiber front!!

Rock Island Armory currently makes several 1911's in 10MM. They make them in 4.25 and five inch with and without rails. They also make a double stack 10MM. I have one of the 4.25 inch rail guns and it is a great gun for the money. Its all steel so it soaks up the recoil and mine is very accurate.

Sig P220 10mm gets my vote. I've tried the Colt's, Glocks, Springfields...the Sig is what I settled on. Heavy enough to soak up whatever load you go with, 100% reliable, accurate and fits my hand well.

I had a Sig P220 Elite 10mm SA/DA and wish I had never sold it. That pistol is an absolute beast. Gorgeous too. The sale funded a S&W 1076 I had been looking for for years though. I figured I could always find another P220 10mm, but I might not find that particular 1076 again. I don't regret it, but I will eventually acquire another - they are that nice.

I thoroughly enjoy shooting my Smith 1006. I have all the 10XX series except the unicorn 1046. I expect my faith will be in St Peter's hands before I acquire that one.

If you want to get in on the 10mm Auto game on the cheap, it is hard to beat the price of the Rock Island Armory 1911's. No, they are not frilly pistols, but they are rock bottom priced and are generally good pistols. Their 10mm pistols also feature bushingless bull barrels and integral feed ramps, those heavy barrels do help reduce recoil battering of the slide and receiver.

10mm 1911 magazines are available from MecGar, Checkmate and Metalcraft. Depending on the pistol manufacturer any of these brands could be "Factory Original.", The only difference is ones purchased after-market will not be marked like one from the respective factory. Very few, if any firearms manufacturers make their own magazines!

Colt uses MetalCraft and Checkmate
Kimber uses Checkmate I believe
Ruger I am not sure
S&W has used MecGar for many models for many years
Most of the "Boutique" magazines sold for premium prices are made by one of these companies, Example, Chip McCormick are Checkmate products, or at least used to be. These remarks apply equally to all models and calibers from most makers.

All of these are first quality

I traded for a Glock 20 last week, first one I’ve owned, took it to the range Sunday and I have to say it shot beautiful. Put about 150 rounds of reloads thru it without a hiccup and very accurate, recoil was easy to handle and 15 round mags to boot.

I’ll be on the lookout for a Sig P220

I have an early Delta Elite and a 1076. I like them both, BUT, if I was going to carry it every day, I'd give the edge to the Smith. It is built like a tank, carries one more round, and has good night sights. The DA/SA feature is nice as little old ladies won't melt their tennis shoes seeing a hammer at full stand like a cocked and locked 1911.

Downside is any magazines for the Smith are scarce and expensive. Good magazines for 1911 are not tough to find.

Shot the Glock, still meh...

SIG 220 might still be the best answer in today's world, I need to do more shooting with one.

I've shot the 1911 in 10mm. One thing's for sure: the XDM is much softer shooting.

When Darth Vader concealed carrries, it's the XDM with 16 rounds of full power stuff.

I have heard that the polymer guns absorb recoil better than the steel ones. Does make sense to me. The plastic can flex to absorb the shock. The steel transmits all of it to your hand.

I still like steel though.

The 10 series mags are no longer being made. $80-$125 each. The 1911 style mags are comparable in price to 45 mags.

It’s been years since I had both my Glock 29 and S&W 1006 at the range at the same time, but I remember clearly that when I did, this was my hands-on perception also, the Glock seemed just a touch more friendly in my hands than the 1006 with exactly the same loads I was running that day.

If I remember, I’m going to do it again soon and see if that perception holds true again.

If you were to (somehow?!) gather all the folks who have ever been passionate about the 10mm Auto cartridge, but also have near disgust for the Bren Ten, I would be standing tall at the front of that gathered group.

The Witness Match in 10mm is single action with a good trigger, holds 15 rounds and is the best ergonomically - feels good in the hand. The Glocks are reliable but feel like bricks in the hand. I have a Kimber 10 that is nice too.

Another great 10mm option is Dan Wesson, who has a few options. I currently have an RZ10 Razorback that looks good, is well made and runs like a champ!

Default The perfect platform for the 10MM

IMO the mid-length Third Gen guns fit the bill, especially the DAO M1086.

Here's a project I did many years ago.

We can't forget the rare CS10 now can we . Mine was done by the infamous BMCM (Bill). It carries well and the recoil is not bad . Only 6+1 rounds , but if you can't take care of business with that amount of 10mm HP's , you're in trouble .

The pistol that introduced the world to the 10mm Auto cartridge. It's a shame there are so few around and even fewer magazines and that no one has been able to return it to production.

How much do you want to spend and what will you do with it? If you have a clear idea of those two things, you’re in business. There are so many 10mm semi-autos available right now it’s nearly mind-boggling.

In my own case, I’ve always been interested to try a 10mm in a Commander-length, steel-frame 1911. Haven’t done that yet, but I might. I believe our forum friend Iggy has a similar gun made by Dan Wesson that he has shown us, but I can’t be certain. Maybe he will come along and comment here.

Yes, DW did offer a bob-tailed commander sized 1911 chambered in 10mm.

If I was going to get another 10mm (had a 1076 and sold it - still have the G20SF) I would plunk down the money for the Bruin by Dan Wesson.

They have a fair mil pricing program that will knock a few bucks off. Not sure what the wholesale is.

EDIT to add: It looks like they've added a model to their line; Kodiak.

I am also looking for a 10mm in very near future. I used to have all but the 1046 in S&W. They are Great guns. I will likely stick with a current production gun this time. My 2 current favorites are the Sig P220 and the Dan Wesson. Both are top notch. The Sig is favored the most by reviewers and owners and I also collect Sig P220s.
However, if you just want to see what the caliber is all about you may want to go inexpensive just to start with then pick up a nicer gun after you decide to keep going in the 10mm. For that you cannot beat a Glocks price, ease off selling and reliability. I am not a glock fan at all. I currently own zero (0). But I have in the past. They do what they do.. They are good guns. I just don't like them.

I now have both Smith 10mms, revolver, auto and a well rounded sampling of other 10mms.

Lots of nice 1911 versions of 10mm on the market today but I like a traditional DA pistol. I had the 1076 when it first came out and a 1086...Last year I went for the Dan Wesson Bruin, 6 inch...but after 500 rounds I turned it loose for my Sig Sauer 220 Legion traditional DA 10mm...just have had great success with the Sigs since buying my first one in 1985.
Shooting 10mm is fun...Enjoy !!

Then, for those of you who've got the discretionary bucks (like, $2500), there's the fully-custom CZ DA/SA 10mm built off the big Model 97 frame.

I believe Iggy has (From DW) what I had built, a CCO:

Another Ruger SR1911 10mm owner here. I own several Ruger semiautos and am highly satisfied with their quality. Shooting a 10mm 1911, when compared to a .45, is about the difference between a 38 Spl.+P and a .357 Magnum in a 4" gun.

I've owned an adj. sighted 1006 for many years. My latest is a RIA 10mm 1911 with adj. sights..****ns perfectly. I like it a lot.
