Default Vacuum Seal Bag for Storage

Seems like a good idea but want to check a few other opinions before I commit to it for a long time. Have a couple 41’s from 1959 and somewhere in the early 60’s. Don’t shoot them often and worried they’d begin to rust if I go 1-2 years before I look at them again. Took the grips off and coated one liberally in oil then sealed the whole thing in a bag. On the other I only did the barrel as I have a new barrel I want to shoot with on the way.

Any objections or issues with this plan for storing them?

I keep one vacuum sealed in my toilet tank. I check it out occasionally and it's fine. I only do this because I'm fighting against an obvious and abundant source of moisture in the immediate vicinity of the pistol, otherwise I would consider doing this absolute overkill... then again, maybe me keeping a gun in the toilet tank is absolute overkill.

Also, i have no clue why you'd own a bunch of 41's and not want to look at them for years at a time.

Yea, I object! You aint storing a steak in the freezer. Leave the guns in a safe with a de-humidifier. And check them occasionally.
Just my opinion, and Im a crotchety old man! Just ignore me, but I feel better. Best, Mike

Haha thanks. Appreciate the quick responses. It’s horrifyingly humid here and smooth blued surfaces seem to attract surface rust quickly no matter how often I check.

Here ya go:

BROWNELLS/BLUGUARD VCI VACUUM SEAL STORAGE BAGS | Brownells

Good for 5-10 years. Brownells has them on back order, but other places probably have them too.

Wow, now that's the definition of gun paranoia. Keeping a gun in a bag in your toilet's flush tank. You honestly think the bad guy is going to let you finish your business BEFORE shooting through the door? Please tell me you don't keep one in a hollowed out Bible by your bed.

Well, in the age of conservation some put bricks in their toilet tank if they don’t have a “modern new age” model.

I personally think it is a great idea. One which I never even thought of. Many of my S&W examples have been described as heavy as bricks. I might put my 645 in one of the lower toilet tanks, my 4506 in the other, and my 845 or 945 in the master bedroom one.

Wow indeed.

Why would I finish using the bathroom while a bad guy was randomly shooting through doors in my house? On the other hand, if I do have a bad guy randomly shooting through doors in my home while I'm in the bathroom, I'll be glad I have a gun there. I am paranoid, diagnosed, it's a serious struggle in my life, got any mo of dem jokes tho?

I have never vacuum sealed a gun for long term storage, (ammo and other perishables though without issue). But, you have to figure that rust needs oxygen to form, and your gun being in an essentially oxygen free environment, it should work fine.

On a side note, I too keep a SS handgun stashed in the bathroom. If you think about it, its one of the most vulnerable places you can commonly be in your home if someone busts in uninvited.

I’ve been using these silicone impregnated gun socks for my handguns, rifles and shotguns for years without any rust or corrosion issues. I keep a cotton rag that has some gun oil in it sealed in a Ziplock bag and occasionally I’ll take a gun or two from the safe, wipe it down, inspect it, and put it back in the gun sock. I could see vac sealing if you plan to store your gun(s) in a “bug-out” location that isn’t climate controlled space, for some future bug out situation, but otherwise most homes are perfectly temp controlled. Just my opinion

Zerust anti corrosion paper. Seal it in a bag and you seal in the moisture and it can still rust. Include some desiccant pods if you do that. Industrial components are shipped in anti corrosion paper

When the Tilia Foodsaver (which I think was the first of the home vacuum sealers) first came out in the late 80’s/early 90’s, firearm storage was in fact, one of the suggested uses for it.

Inside the tank, gun is above the water line, but the bottom of the bag IS submerged. In the bag is a .357 J frame with no reloads, it's just the gun that gets me to my next gun. At first I would check it every couple of days, then every couple of weeks. Now I check it about once a month, and I've never had a discrepancy. I use gorilla heavy duty mounting tape rated at 30 pounds to keep it secure, and I worry more about the vacuum seal failing then I worry about the tape failing, gorilla products are legit in my opinion.

The toilet tank is an old drug dealer trick. Jus' sayin".

As for the preservation in something part - why not? Cosmoline has kept WWII guns pristine since that era, so it's an old trick that works. If you really don't occasionally fondle your safe dwellers, then keeping as many as you want "bagged and tagged" would work.

Kinda like having your own private morgue. Or mausoleum. Or ?
But if we hear plastic ripping open in the next room when we come to visit, we're outta there!!!

Way back in the late 70's the LGS owner told me he would take the grips off a gun, put it in a plastic bag, then hose it down with WD-40 and seal it up and store it. That's just what I did, for decades. I would wrap the package in newspaper and put it in a safe deposit box in the bank.
Worked fine. I did have to clean the guns before use but that just taught me how to clean guns.
I did this back when I was single and didn't live in a secure abode. At times I lived in cheap trailer parks and such. My home is more secure now, but I'd do this again in a heartbeat if need be.

When traveling and staying in hotels in my working days, I'd take a loaded J-Frame S&W in a closed ziplock bag into the shower with me. Nowadays, when traveling for my wife's medical issues, it's usually a Ruger EC9s.

Toilet tank?
I used to keep a Mini-14 tucked up underneath the counter in the bathroom of my trailer. (This was a looong time ago.) It hung between the sink and the trim at the front edge of the counter.
So I guess I don't have room to talk about someone putting a handgun in their toilet tank. Except...isn't it remotely possible some kid might find it? Back in my teaching days kids would take a dump in the toilet tank as a prank. Just sayin'.

Between the language, kinks, random firearms, and many other forms of debuachery you may find around here, I will admit that it IS NOT a child friendly environment at casa '89. Luckily, we rarely host children and my dogs haven't figured out how to start pulling triggers yet.

We always called taking a dank in the tank a "double decker". Classic.

The old gun behind the toilet tank worked for Michael Corleone.

I was just fixing to mention Michael Corleone but I really like the fact that we are reminded that some folks take a walk in the woods!

Seriously, two things.

1. I use silicon sox or similar gun socks for everything. No plastic bags for me although I know they manufacture some for the purpose.

2. I always, that's ALWAYS, keep a handgun in the bathroom. I keep them elsewhere, too, but in the bathroom you are totally vulnerable and you need one nearby. My choice for decades has been a Ruger Security Six snubbie and I keep it in a gun sock. I have never had any issues with rust.

Just tonight a friend and I were discussing bringing handguns into the shower and I did say that if he chooses to do that he needs to use a plastic bag. But I wouldn't leave it in there afterwards. YMMV

Some of this is a real hoot. Leaving that behind, Yes, guns and other treasures, be they tools or whatever can and will rust under oil. All the oil does is seal in the moisture. I used to keep everything wiped down with a CPL rag. Metal has pores and grain just like wood, to a degree. Did some work for H&K and they supplied SHEATH by the gallon. I then started using SHEATH as well as the Breakfree. Haven't had a rust problem in a good number of years, and keep a constant vigil out for it. These days SHEATH is marketed as -BARRICADE - I would never be without it, not ever. If something does get wet, as rain, the water will bead up. Renwax helps as well. I have been cleaning guns etc for a long time and do not consider it a chore. I still enjoy doing it. After all, who doesn't;t like the smell of Hoppes around a campfire.

+1 on what J.R. Weems said about Sheath / Barricade. I have used it for years on guns stored for any length of time in the safe, and it does the job well. Leaves a slight film on the gun when the carrying solvent evaporates that is long lasting and effective. Does not dry or evaporate away like some oils, and wipes off easy when you want to use the gun.

I used vacuum seal bags to store ammo. I received a quantity of rare steel cased E. German made 7.92x33mm ammo. Its previous storage was not that great as the steel cases were starting to develop rust freckles. Steel wool was used to remove the freckles and the ammo went into a vacuum seal bag to prevent any further case deterioration. Oil was NOT put on the cleaned steel case as I was afraid of the oil penetrating the primer pocket and "killing" the primer.

In my pocket. It's been there every day for decades. Old Timer pocketknife.

All this talk of storing your gun in the dookie pit, or the thunder mug has me rolling on the floor...
On a more serious note, since plastic bags are made from petroleum, and most gun oils are petroleum based, I would worry about the oils attacking the plastic. I guess it depends on what kind of plastic is used in the bag.

For actual storage, and not stupid stuff like putting a gun in a toilet, I use Poly Gun Bags.

Just tonight a friend and I were discussing bringing handguns into the shower and I did say that if he chooses to do that he needs to use a plastic bag. But I wouldn't leave it in there afterwards. YMMV

I bought several of those o ring sealed waterproof boxes for canoeing. Reminded me of sealed camera housings from my SCUBA days. The wife has appropriated one for her kayak now for her phone. My pottie gun is concealed behind some artwork.

I have read and studied all 45 Posts. So what is the verdict on storage of your firearm, either short or long term? I have seen alot of early 1900 era pistols that were discovered in sock and pantie drawers that look darn near near. So I have some in my sock drawer, but since I dont wear panties any more, I moved them to my wifes bureau. . best, Mike

I am late to this show, but I think a hideout in the throne room is a pretty good idea. Most of the newer homes should have a very small closet in the bathroom. A person could put a wooden dowel into the inside wall above the door frame in that closet, then after the glue dries , you could hang a little Glock 42 were up something up there. A quick ransack of the house may not discover the pistol, especially since they will probably be in a hurry. And, it’s still available to the owner within a couple of seconds versus taking off the toilet tank lid, opening the plastic bag, and bringing it into action. Posting this for a friend ...

My wife says I am deadly enough on the toilet without a gun. Fromm my toilet, I can get to my night gun quicker than opening the toilet lid anyway.
