Date of production help needed.
I just acquired what I was told is a 39-2 9mm semi auto with serial # of 1028---only 4 digits with no prefix. My research shows this to be early and unusual. Was this a military firearm? The weapon would have to be classified as 95-98% of original---NICE_NICE!
I would like to learn date of production and some history--Thanks in advance.
Thanks

Started with 1001 in 1954 and got to 115000 in 1970, then went into Alpha prefixes. Yours would be a VERY EARLY production model. However the 39-2 were as far as I know started up in 1971. Prior to that should be either pre-39 or 39 no dash. Very strange indeed. Even stranger if yours has a steel frame. Have you checked? I am confident somebody with better info that me will jump in here.

There are two possibilities here. If the full visible serial number is 1028 (stamped on the left frame above the trigger), it is a 9 mm Automatic or pre-model 39. If it is stamped MOD 39-2 the serial number has been altered.

Frame is non magnetic---aluminum--slide is steel. There is no model designation stamped on left side in area of serial #. Only the number 1028--nothing designating the model--no noticeable area of modification--no indication of alteration. Yes--it is 9mm as stamped on barrel--9 mm ctg. All help is appreciated as I stumbled on this unexpectedly in my travels in Minnesota. When I learn how to work photos here I will post some. Thanks again. Yes--it will be for sale when I learn what I have and can assimilate correct value.

So it is an early 9 mm Automatic. Have a look at the FAQ at the upper left corner of the page for photo posting instructions.

Hello Mr. 27. The 9mm started with Sn. 1001 and shipped on Nov.15, 1954.
Your 9mm was probably the 28th frame that was serial numbered.
When was it shipped, I dont have a clue. I referenced my data list of known Sns.. The closest I have is 1021 that had an experimental extractor.I would send in for an Historical Letter, which will note the ship date and destination. Or, come back as Open on the books. Stay in
touch. Mike

Cannot get to upload pictures. Sorry but I will go to another venue that is more user friendly. I am not a computer nerd and am too old to learn.

Im not speaking from gospel but from what I have read.
Up stairs management may have requested a sales sample or a gift and never logged out as far as date or destination. I have a few mod-39s
that fall into this category. No big deal, you can still est. a ship date.
Looking fwd to some pics.

Thanks to all for the help. Now to assemble what I have learned--maybe even put a few rounds down range.

Mr. 27, if you shoot, no hot ammo, and charge the chamber from the mag.
It may save the extractor.
