If I had to choose between those two, I'd pick the 1911. In general, I'm not a fan of 3rd Gen S&W semi-autos. They don't feel right in my hands and I don't like the way the slide-mounted safeties work. With the 4506 specifically, I've handled them and to me they feel chunky and heavy.
I like 1911s. I have two, and my experience has been with full-size steel guns. I've always wanted to try a Commander-size gun. While I don't carry 1911s for self defense, if I did the lighter weight of the Sc gun would be appreciated.
You're definitely comparing apples and oranges, though. If at all possible, try them both, either in person at a gun store or gun show, or, ideally, at a rental range.
Or just get both.
Just my opinion.

I have both. The 1911 is nice but kicks much more than the 4506. Of course, its way lighter. The way it fits one's hand will also make a difference, as will the grips.
Many more cheaper parts for the 1911 than the 4506, if that matters to you. Since I don't carry either one of these for CCW, if forced to pick one it would be the 4506, since it's easier to shoot.
Final thoughts - since I bought a couple of N frame 45ACP revolvers, I am going to sell both of my semi autos. The N frames are just so much fun to shoot it's hard to describe.

A 1911 was the first handgun I ever purchased, and they do shoot very nicely at the range. Bore axis is lower to the hand, and the single action trigger makes accuracy easier. That being said, for actual use outside of the range, I prefer the manual of arms of the 4506 (and any other TDA S&W 3rd Gen) to the 1911.
The 4506 is safer to load, unload, and carry due to the safety/decocker. The 1911 will either have to be carried cocked-n-locked or you would have to manually cock the hammer to fire. Decocking a 1911 means that you hold the hammer while pulling the trigger and ease it down.
The 4506 is reliable with pretty much any ammunition, including defensive hollowpoints that my 1911 would constantly stovepipe on. It is necessary to learn how to shoot the first DA shot with accuracy, and the SA reset is great on these guns. Bore axis is higher, but with the weight of the 4506 I don't get much muzzle flip at all. Very easy to stay on target and be accurate with these guns.

I always tell folks to buy the 1911, that leaves more 4506's for me.

Personally, I'd go for the 4506. They're typically a lot cheaper and I'm really not a huge fan of S&W's 1911s.

Which do you like better, a 4506 or a 1911? That's like asking which do you like better, chocolate ice cream or cauliflower? Two vastly different things.
I will say that S&W is not and has not made a 4506 in a long time, whereas everyone and his brother is making some sort of 1911.

Bad example. Honestly, is there anyone on planet Earth who prefers Cauliflower over Chocolate Ice Cream?

4506, ... or better is a 4566. A bit easier to tote concealed, just as accurate.

Good question. I liked the 1911SC so much after I bought my first one I bought another one. But, for great big old single action/double action stainless reliability you really can't beat the 4506. Hmm, see what you mean...tough choice.
Buy them both. They are both great pistols!!
