Default Shorty Forty

Traveling in Texas, I like to stop in LGS along the way to see the sights. Found this one in the display case, listed on the tag as a model 39, and took it home for under 500 bucks.

Don’t know much about these - yet - but looks to be from original run in 1992.

No box no papers and only one mag, but I am a happy camper.

Congratulations!

I'll tell you, I don't know how on Earth I had managed to overlook the S&W 3rd Gen pistols for so long.

I remember how close I had come to purchasing a CS40 for cheap right when I was first getting into handguns, but I was ignorant at the time so after reading a bunch of utter nonsense that was being thrown around at the time about how .40 S&W was an absolutely terrible cartridge which was no more effective than 9mm Luger yet generated harsh recoil, lots more noise, a blinding muzzle flash, and would inevitably result in the catastrophic failure of any firearm chambered in it, I passed on it thinking; "Well, no wonder why such a nice-looking firearm is so cheap!"

*sighs* If only I could go back in time inside of a time-traveling DeLorean DMC then tell myself that .40 S&W is in fact awesome and so are S&W 3rd Gen Pistols, then I would have a my very own CS40 to complement my 4006TSW, even if only in an alternate timeline.

Oh well, live and learn. Enjoy your new pistol.

I’m glad other people are also finding these wonderful .40’s for great prices. I’m late to the party but catching up quick both in interest and nice finds.

Here is an image of the letter I got on mine. You may have seen one before but maybe not.

Sad day when we lost Lew Horton and our go to guy there, (Earl.)

Its big brother has been with me since it was purchased new in the early ‘90s:

This Performance Center Model 4006 Comp-40 (two digit serial number) has its barrel marked BAR-STO 40S&W, which actually measures 5-1/2 inches, rather than the 5-1/4 inches stated in the letter below or the 5 inches specified for the Tactical 40 in the text pictured above your Shorty Forty. I’ve seen other, later variations, with barrels which lack the BAR-STO marking. Another remarkable feature on my 4006 Competition Model is the Briley Titanium Nitride spherical bushing supporting that Bar-Sto barrel at the front end. The safety looks to be the same as on the 745, except for the color.

I found this copy of a letter from S&W concerning another pistol with serial number very close to mine:

The sights on my pistol are not original to it: An MMC adjustable rear with dots blacked out and a Novak .245” white dot front.

How is the barrel on your Shorty Forty marked and bushed?

.

Great gun at a GREAT price! I would jump on a stainless Shorty 40 of I could find one at a good price. I have one in black but sure love the stainless, too.

Going to range I hope...expect a report from you soon. This pic is kind of dark but it will have to do.

Barrel hood reads “40 S&W Performance”

I think the bushing is like yours.
