Mod 439 find. Cross that out!
By description it sounds like a Mod 439 in good shape. Will be checking it over this week to verify and would like to know if there are any potential issues to be aware of and approximate value. Yup, looking to buy from private seller
Actually a 39-2, in hand, more info to follow................

Nice guns, hard (expensive) to find magazines - worth more if it has more than 1 magazine. Matching box adds value. You can check Closed Auctions on GB to get idea of value, but as I recall there were a lot of 39 and 439 pistols in what appeared to be very good condition going unsold in the high $5xx range.
Local range for a decent 439 (not Near New or 97% or near perfect condition, but a good solid piece with 1 or 2 magazines but no box) was $400-450 (1 magazine toward low end of that, 2 magazines toward high end). Beat up grips or a lot of wear / scratches thru finish subtract.
There was a recall for certain serial number ranges of 439 and other similar guns for decocker / safety issues - info was posted here when I first saw details. There is a simple check to see if a particular gun is affected and my understanding is SW will repair at no cost. I will see if i can find and post details.

After I inherited my 39-2 I decided I “just had to have” a 639 to go with it so I could put more wear and tear on that one. Not a great bargain at about $525 delivered, but I was in the market to get it right then. Of course I then “just had to have” a second mag, and that cost me a little more than $50. BTW, if that 439 only has one mag with it, plan on spending at least $40-50 each for Additional factory mags, and the consensus here seems to be “accept no substitutes.”

I picked up a used 439 back in the mid-1990s. I suggest that whenever you see magazines or spare parts, grab them. Also, remember that almost every xx39 magazine will work with a 439!

Thanks, after further research I see it could be a 39 if a drift rear sight. My info is a 9mm. blue and alum frame and wood stocks. Will know more later on in the week.

Unlikely a Mod 39 would have drift adjustable sights, the lollipop style is much more common, or rarely the adjustables with big protective fins. Various iterations of the 439 may be expected to have the basic non-adjustables like a 1911 Government Model, Novak style, or the finned style (think ‘57 Chevy.)

Other x39 mags and 3906 mags Kinda Sorta work but may not fit as well at bottom on butt as original - but not 3913/3953 (too short) - but as advised elsewhere stay with SW mags not aftermarket for single stack 9mm (MecGar OK for double stack in my experience but they dont make for single stack)

My 439 is a pinto. Still argue about it. Blued slide, clear anodized frame. Winged adj sights, round trigger guard. Beautiful lines on it. I have a few 39xx 9 round mags as well as a 39 and x39 pair that came with it. Will fire NATO or +P rounds if needed, but not a good idea for a steady diet. Just swap out the readily available recoil springs regularly, and keep the frame rails greased.
Mine has the Pach Signature rubber grips, and I recently got a NOS set here too. I do have several aftermarket wood sets as well, from Numerich a few decades ago.

PS in the first picture with 2 mags, the 8 round with thin butt plate is correct. The 9 round with larger butt plate is NOT a 439 mag

Not to pick nits, but isn’t the blued Model 39 on the right equipped with the windage (only) adjustable sights having a long tang imbedded in the top of the slide? This is the style I referred to as “lollipop” because of its round shape and tang. This style can also be replaced with a factory optional unit that has both windage and elevation adjustment.

You may be right. The 39 picture is not my gun. I thought i bought it but seller substituted a different 39 with cosmetic damage. Fraud claim pending with GB for nearly 3 mo with no resolution yet. Sore subject.

Mix and Match
I have a 439 completely original but found after market grips that are thinner than original and fit my small hands better. They are wood but black in color. I also have a complete 639 upper found on ebay and had to try it out. It makes a nice shooter with less maintenance.

I have to admit the '57 Chevy tail fins around the sights are starting to grow on me. I just may have to add that style upper to my accumulation. At the very last they qualify as utilitarian.
