I was able to pick up a 4006 10rd mag for 21.50 including shipping on fleabay. Not bad IMHO.

The 4th edition S&W bible indicates there are two versions of the 3913TSW. 1997-1999 3913TSW calls for a 7rd magazine, 2000-2006 3913TSW calls for a 8rd magazine and slide is labeled '9 Tactical Smith & Wesson, and those were the 'railed' versions.
The pic shows the baseplates for CS9 versus 3913TSW.
Mag 'C' IS shorter than 'D' & 'E', and 'C' has metal baseplates instead of plastic baseplates of 'D' & 'E'. Mag 'C' produces a better concealable pistol as nothing sticks out past the bottom of the magwell. Mag 'C' are rare and very desireable. 2nd pic.

Those original 10rd 4006 magazines are getting to be hard to find. Good score.

I took the standard commonly used chart, 1st pic, and put it in photoshop and did some re-arranging, 2nd pic, and then added some notes, 3rd pic.
Let me know if some other notes need to be added.

Turns out it was too good to be true. Seller just messaged me, said it was relisted but he didn't have it. Order cancelled and refund issued. Bummer

Keep an eye out for the 10rd mags on GB. Every once in a while I see a 5-fer-$100 deal from pawn shops or police supply shops... That's how I got mine.

That chart is excellent... I know it will be a big help to me, and I plan to print off a copy to keep in my files added to supplement SCSW-4. I just have one question though. How do you know without actually seeing a good picture which of the third generation 39 series mags have the little step in front of the black rubber baseplate to fill in the gap left by the longer mag body? Did I miss that somehow?

Thanks again for posting this!

I can't answer that as I don't know and I would need one of each for a picture.
Probably best can be answered by member of post #45.

Adding for the 'charts', there are a many 'transitionals' also that aren't figured in them.

I wonder if someone can identify a couple magazines I came across recently (while looking for others, of course.

From the post above, one may be a "later 639" (not sure what later means in this case).

The other one locks up in my 5906, and has a metal base plate with a lazy "&".

Thanks.

The one with a metal base might be either a x59 or 59 magazine.

The one with the red follower looks like an early 3904/06 eight round magazine. It should fit the 2nd Gen (439/639), and maybe 39-2.

The 1st and 2nd gen (single stack) magazines with the metal floorplate have a shorter tube than the later 3rd gen magazines with the plastic floorplate. That floorplate was used to adapt the longer tube magazines to the 1st and 2nd gen pistols so there would be no visible gap. It is indeed a 639 magazine that will not work in a 3906 (unless you switch to the flatter plastic floorplate).

Ok, so the single stack is a 639 magazine, and with a different, flat, floor plate a 3906 magazine. I can measure it if that makes a difference No wonder I could not figure it out, but I am glad I asked.

The second magazine locks and fits well into my 5906. I am going to measure and compare to the tube of my 5906 magazines tomorrow, but at a glance it looks to be the same length. It holds 14 rounds, not 15 like the factory 5906 mags.

I would still be interested in finding out which model it was for originally. Besides the lazy "&" in the S&W stamp on the floor plate, there is also a faint "A". It seems to be blued steel and weighs about 1/2 oz more than the 5906 mag.

The 2nd mag seems to be of from/for 59, 459, 559. Didn't the 659, stainless steel slide and frame, come with 'stainless steel looking' magazines with 'stainless steel looking' metal baseplates ?

Image one shows the exact variant I was asking about. If I understand correctly, that would be an optimal mag to have for the 39/639 because it holds an additional round compared to the earlier types and has the little step on the toe to fill the gap created by the longer tube, right? Now I know what to look for!
BTW, I seem to recall somebody listing a part # for that rubber base as a separate item, enabling conversion of the “regular” 3906 mag to be just right for my Franken-Smith dream kit. Does anyone have that part # at their fingertips?

I'm am struggling not to seem dense in the midst of more knowledgeable people, but...are you saying you just want the plastic floor plate from the magazine I asked about, or the magazine? You can have that plastic part, it is not doing me any good. I simply pulled a couple interesting mags out of a crate of other (and mostly dirty) magazines along with what I WAS looking for. If so, pm me.

Having said that, I think floor plates for at least some 3rd gen magazines are available from the usual online part stores for about $5... which would be very appropriate, because then your FrankenSmith could have little FrankenMagazines to keep it company...

Went to the Berea Ohio gun show today, Saturday. Was the normal big show. Picked up magazines, 1 CS9 and 10 45ACPs'. 4-6rounders for 45TSWs', 3-7rounders, & 3 8rounders.
My mag supplier had many in 9, 40, & 45. He only sets up at a few of the NE Ohio shows and the last one was in January. He doesn't sell on-line and saves the S&Ws' for me to look at first. He works the shows and his dad hits the 'gun store out of business' auctions.
2 of my other suppliers, one raised his prices and the other was almost empty of mags to sell.
I'm going back tomorrow.

Seeing as some are asking " What are these" I'm going to throw mine in . A few years go I bought some M52 mags and these were with them . They will go into my 52 , but just barely . So I tried them in my 39 and they fit , also loaded them with 9mm ammo . I'm guessing they are early M39 mags , but I just don't know .

Went back to the Berea show today and got 11 more magazines, 3 for 4013 and 8 in 45ACP. That makes 22 mags for the 2 days. Once I figure out which will be for my 'master set', the rest will go to the mags for sale thread.

The Model 39 military magazines have that cutout. Are the followers plastic or the metal "X" variety?

You need to change your screen name to “Mag Magnet.” I haven’t been to a gun show since the Kung Flu hit, but at the last few I went to, I sure don’t remember that many original mags even being available!

Then again, maybe we could form a consortium and put you on retainer since so many of us have benefitted From your unique abilities. I know I certainly appreciate the one I got from you and hope to deal with you again soon.

Your Phriendly ‘Phibian

As I posted in my post #70, my mag supplier (John) maintains an inventory list of all brands magazines, he sees me and hands me,without even asking for it, the book to look thru. I'll look thru it for new & interesting mags. He knows I'm only interested in 1st 2nd & 3rd gen mags. Then he'll hand me the containers to look thru (9, 40, 45) to help myself ( while he's dealing with others) and I'll pull out the ones I want. The containers also contain mags for the plastic S&W pistols so I search thru. About $500 to him this past weekend, so I'll have many to pass onto members.

Ran across this yesterday at the show. Not being a 45 person, is it for the 645/745 because of the metal baseplate ?
Is it unusual/rare ?

That is the second version of the Model 645 magazine, I do not think it is particularly rare. I now have 4 or 5 of them.

Picked up some mags at the Akron show today. Need info on 1. The 2nd one in each pic is like the one I posted in post #77, then post #79 said it's for a 645.
The 1st one in each pic is new to me, metal follower - different baseplate. Would it be the predecessor to the 2nd one in each pic ?

Not that long ago after years of looking, I finally did find and get an excellent Pre-Rail 3913TSW for the price I was willing to pay. $525.00 but it is excellent and complete with everything. Everything including two extra extended “finger” baseplates. They are exactly like my CS9 magazine baseplates. I “assumed” that they originally came with the pistol and seem to remember that they were actually original parts of the package. I copied your picture for reference.

The one on the left is the first version 645 magazine. The metal follower may not always engage the slide stop as the last round is ejected and the spring retained base plate can come off during a reload if the mag is forcefully slammed into the mag well.

The one on the right is the second version 645 magazine. The plastic follower and button retained base plates are far more reliable.

On more than one occasion (not related to S&W semiautos) I have bolstered my hard-to-obtain mag inventory by finding a gun packaged with a bunch of mags, and then re-sold the gun. Not the easiest thing to do, but it seems to me that "package deals" often tend to sell on auction sites for a price clearly below the value of all the components. I don't have a solid explanation for that and YMMV. I surmise people just don't like to have to calculate the value of the various package components and add them all up, but I don't really know.

Midway seems to get a fair amount of new factory magazines from S&W, but the models fluctuate. Sometimes you can order one on back-order, and sometimes you can't, and just have to check back.

This is the current situation for brand new 439/3906 single stack magazines. (No back-order, but overdue to come into stock, apparently.)
Smith & Wesson Mag S&W 39 439 539 639 909 952 3904 3906 3944 3946 9mm

I haven't seen any 4506/4566/4566TSW factory mags on the Midway site for a while, but then I haven't been looking, either.

I occasionally order another spare CS9/7rd and 3913/8rd mag from them, just to put back, but prefer to wait until they have a sale on them. I think I paid $26/ea some while back when they went on sale. Still not a bad price for $35, though, for brand new factory mags made for the discontinued (but immensely popular) single stack 3rd gens.
Smith & Wesson Mag S&W CS9 9mm Luger 7-Round SS

Rather than wait for the factory to list receiving a current order of 4040PD magazines, I checked some of the online vendors of new 3rd gen magazines (who sometimes have standing orders for factory mag runs). I picked up a couple more extra 4040 mags when Brownells quickly got some in. The were a bit pricey at approx $45/ea, but I got them for a few dollars less with a LE/armorer discount. Not as low as I could've ordered them from the factory (26% armorer discount of MSRP), if I wanted to wait a few weeks (or months) but Brownells had them listed as shortly arriving in-stock.

I recently purchased a 945 performance center. I assumed the two mags that were in the box were the correct magazines. They were not. Now I have a full sized 945 that I can't shoot. Who among you magazine wizards can help me out.../ point me in the right direction.

If they don't have the PC logo on them they aren't for the 045 . Most , if not all of my 945 mags say " For 945 use only " on them . I sent you a PM .

The 8 round ones will work in the 945 and the 4506. The 7 round ones will work in the 945 Compact and the 4516. I have some like the photos that I would sell.

I have several of them and they work fine in my 39-2. Except for not having the "S&W" logo on floor plate, they are very close copies of the original.

Question for the former S&W employees: What was S&W policy on the manufacture of magazines for their semi-auto handguns? Was the assumption that each semi-auto handgun owner would like X number of magazines for their gun? What was the number X - 2 or 5 or 10 or ? It would be interesting to get some idea of the total number of S&W manufactured magazines which were produced. Or was the number of magazines manufactured a variable where one model of semi-auto handgun had a total number of Y magazines made for it while another model had a total number of Z magazines made for it? An inquiring mind would like to know.

I only have one Mod 39 mag with the metal X follower, a well used one provided for me by oldman10mm. I can’t comment on its function, although it works perfectly for me, because sometime in its past it had a Metalloy finish added so it is super slick inside... in fact it has become my go to mag in the Franken-Smith. Thanks again go to oldman10mm!

Just rec. two nice Mod-39 X steel follower mags. These have the long floor plate stamped S&W. About mid 1960s to 1972. Not new/unused, but nice shape. Fit and function were spot on. Small line on the upper part of the mag body by the cut out due to the mag catch.
