6906 Question

Looking at a 6906 marked N.P.D. 1218

The box is production code 104057, special order code is 2428, and features it says Special.

My SCSW is only 2nd Edition, no insight there.

Can anyone give me some info on this pistol?

There is a reference to 104057 and says "old style slide" but I don't know what that refers to. Can't speak for your order code or the word "special". Sorry not of much help.

There is nothing else in my 4th edition. 10457 is not listed as anything besides "old style slide", like yours. According to this edition there were two, "specials" in 2006, 150151 and 150167.

Dont think there is anything really Special unless unique Product Code - I have seen designation several times on box ends for various pistols with standard Product Codes and never seen anything unique unless Product Code was unique too - Would love to know if anyone knows more about "Special" designations.

Product Code 104057 is 1 of 5 listed with early (D shaped) Trigger Guard which probably makes it 1988-1991 production. The curved trigger guard 108211 started showing up on the 6906's in early 1992. Special may indicate a Special Order placed for a significant number of pistols on a single contract.

NPD 1218 most likely indicates Newark Police Dept - I have a 6946 with curved trigger guard marked NPD 1991 and a 3953 that dates from June 1991 that is also marked NPD, however both of mine have matching NPD markings on frame, slide, and barrel - so your NPD may not be Newark or possibly predates my pistols.

Usually the Special Order code is the year followed by the Julian date. So, yours would be a 1992 production. Even though it seems like it this year, there are not 428 days in a year.

Since yours says "Special" under features it had something custom even though it carries a standard Product code.

Features on mine are 12 shot (12SH), stainless frame(FS), alloy frame(AA). At least according to the SCSW. I think that FS was supposed to be SF for fixed sights and an error crept in there. Mine is a 108211.

A call to customer service would get you the production date. If you ask the rep if there is any other information you may get more, but you might not. It seem to depend on what the rep feels like telling you based on other threads.

I seem to recall a bunch of NPD on surplus sale....and they were indeed Newark PD. But that's not for sure. AIM?

I see the picture on Gunbroker - per SCSW that Product number should have "early Slide" but pictures show Novak sights which would be a later slide - mounting slots are significantly different.

1990 Literature is first to mention Novak sights and it appears you had a choice of the early fixed sights or Novaks on most pistols and also had option of adjustable but not on 6906 - just lists Fixed Sights for 6906.

May be "Special" was early implementation of Novak sights but that would be inconsistent with Prod Code for Early Slide - or maybe slide has been replaced with newer slide.

As to 2482 "Date" Code - I doubt that was conventional code - last digit of year followed by day number - obviously not 482 days. And 1992 catalog shows 108211 Product code with curved trigger guard. Also by 1992 Novak sights were standard not Special.

Seller says he has paperwork - that could explain.

Not worth $595 to me - if Novak sights were the "Special" designation, they were standard by 1992 - alternately if slide has been replaced, it breaks the originality and begs the question why?

It looks like a nice gun, but I dont think it is particularly collectable without more info than I think is available - and 6906 not that collectable by most standards.

My mistake - 1992 Catalog is first to show Product Code 108211 (curved trigger guard) for 6906 and 108611 (night sight option). The 1991 Product Code is 104071 which is 1st trigger guard (D shape) per SCSW - so presumably the 104071 one year Product code is 1st Trigger Guard with Novak sights (later slide)

Nice box and holster, and does not show much wear - he may get $595 but no bids - I would think that is a bit optimistic especially if slide has been replaced.
