Saw a PC customized 4566TSW
Back in the day, when the Performance Center was formed, they offered customizing services. Different finishes, front slide serrations ect.
I was browsing the big gun auction board and came across one of these customized pistols. A 2002 production 4566TSW. I was surprised to see that the Performance Center was still doing customization for individuals that late. I thought it ended in the mid to late 90s. Perhaps the owner wrote for a gunrag or knew someone at the Performance Center.
This 4566TSW has a black slide (melonite?) and forward slide serrations. Nice two tone effect. I don't recall what else was mentioned, but I would suspect an action job was included. And of course the obligatory Novak night sights.
Anyways, a very nice pistol. Makes me miss the Performance Center and the nice pistols they use to make. Regards 18DAI

One would think that with the prices paid for Nighthawks, Ed Browns and Les Baer among others, there would be a profit to produce PC guns.

Just not enough profit. Unlike the custom houses, S&W is geared to mass production of guns for the civilian and LE markets.

I still like it, despite the rail .
If I owned it that rail would get gone but quick. Regards 18DAI

I've never laid eyes on a two toned 4566, but I must say, those black ones really have brought out the lust in me. Not that I'm in any position to buy one right now, I am going to try and get a look at it before it's gone. It sound very interesting.

Now we'll start scouring our favorite vendor web sites looking for the impossible to find guns. Along the way, we'll find eight others that are "interesting" and will purchase half of them.

I just had a look at the pistol on the big auction site. Very interesting looking with the dark slide, I like it. Still no bids on it, it'll be interesting to see what it goes for.

Anytime I hear 'custom' in a vintage firearm's description, the first and foremost thing that comes to mind is replacing 'custom' with 'ruined.' Bubba loves to 'customize' his gubs and that winds up just ruining the gun or requires the next owner to try and undo the harm, if possible, by scrounging at Numrich and MidwayUSA for original parts. A part of my collection of vintage S&W automatics were 'customized,' but half the fun was undoing it and returning it to stock factory condition. Usually requiring factory correct grips and internals or taking it to a gunsmith to have the 'loving' inscription removed.

Grinder1? The same "Grinder1" here on the Forum?
If so I'm surprised I don't remember it, (IF it WAS ever shown/mentioned here.)

I don't see "Grinder1" referenced.........?
Anyways, member Grinder (who I had transactions with - and miss his pictures and info he provided us ) sold off his Performance Centerc and scarce/rare 3rd gens and moved on to another handgun platform.
Knowledgeable man and generous too. He is missed. Regards 18DAI

Very interesting find 18DAI, I've honestly never seen one like that before. Riveted rails don't bother me (though the milled ones are much better), but I don't understand why they didn't just melonite the frame as well. All black would almost hide the riveted rail, and would look totally sweet with the forward serrations!

TercGen there was one Melonite 4566TSW, with the tack on afterthought rail .
It also had a 4.25 inch match grade barrel and Briley bushing. Adjustable target rear sight. It was one of one, as far as is known.
It was used in a gunrag article, which claimed it was made by the Performance Center to "gauge interest" from LE Agencies.
IIRC the writer.....Wiley Clapp?..bought it.
I do recall Grinder owning an identical two tone 4566TSW. I think he had a thread on it here. Maybe he IS the seller. Regards 18DAI
