The 457s' were made 1996-2006. The 457D was rumored made for Chicago PD with the quantity made and when is unknown.
Maybe some others will post up.

If you call Customer Service, they'll be able to give you the date of manufacture. They probably won't have more information than that.

The 457D is one of the "mystery guns" among the 3rd Gen guns. There is nothing in the SCSW about them at all. The only pictures I've ever seen were posted in the For Sale Forum here a few months ago.

The serial number on that gun was VJBxxxx. The SCSW shows VJA prefixes as being made in 1997.

Do you by any chance have the box?

I'll mention in passing that we always like pictures of rare variations here in the forum.

Congrats! The 457D is a scarce bird. No info on numbers made, but you can bet there were not too many.

IIRC they were made in the mid 90s. Two orders. A handful of the early ones had second strike capability. The rest did not.

I have seen four different examples. All of them had VJB serial prefix. They also had metal mag catches, unlike some of the early 457s which had nylon catches.

The 457 is a very underated and under appreciated 45 carry gun. Enjoy your new pistol! Regards 18DAI

I work at the store that Smith sent T&E guns to do CPD could try the 457D. There were 3 guns that they tried. They were unlike the 457D that was made after they approved the design. Unlike normal 3 rd Gen Smiths that for dry firing you have to re cock the slide. These 3 did not have that. I was able to buy one had Trijicon NS installed and a Hogue grip. Love the gun great shooter.
I have some pics as soon as I figure how to upload them I’ll put them up.
