I am looking to pick up a commander size 1911 for occasional range use and possible concealed carry. I have experience with standard size 1911’s. The S&W 1911 E SC Commander looks like an OK deal. I would appreciate any

Not the "E" series, but I have the older Scandium framed commander size 1911 Sc. It is very accurate and fires flawlessly. The new version should be even better and better to carry concealed. I think you would enjoy it.

What are they asking for the E?
The E is the most under valued 1911 on the market, to get everything it has done to it on a custom gun you'd easily be looking at 3k (the items included list is long).
I paid 1k for mine, used, but brand new.
They retail for 1,400 new at LGS, when you can find one.

Thanks for your comments. The LGS has one foe $1295, and there is another local shop on an auction site that starts at $1225. The pistol sure looks nice, and feels good in my large hands too. Willyboy

I love mine. Shoots great. Scandium frame, 4.25" barrel, and had it about 3 years now. Use a IWB Kramer horsehide for CC. Large on-line Tennessee store has it for about $100 less, and in stock.

Love mine although it doesn't get out much. I put a CT grip on it and it it very accurate and 100% reliable. I think this is the one you're talking about.

Not the cheapest but considering how much other companies get for theirs they are a good deal, IMO.

That's not bad if it's a new gun in the box, but then again it depends on how much you want it too. If you want it, what's a hundred bucks or so? Availability for used is very rare at gun shops, they can be ordered for full retail on the other hand.

I bought one several months ago. The only change I made was G10 grips and a few new CMC mags. I didn't care for the factory magazines.

I carry a colt commander aluminum frame. And train with it at the range.
You will definitely have some more recoil to manage but if you train with the right mindset you shouldnt feel it as much. So I say Get it!
I cannot find a used scandium frame in my state to purchase without exorbitant overcharge.

Edit: agree on getting some better mags. Some hot loads might cause malfunctions in the included cheap government style mags.

I only use Wilson Combat mags myself with the solid "non-tipping" follower, if you use the old "tipping" metal top followers in an aluminum frame without a hardened feed ramp insert the follower will eventually chew up the aluminum ramp. fwiw

I have an early JRE Billboard 1911SC. It’s my favorite 1911. Very accurate and surprisingly soft shooting for the lightweight frame. I recently picked up a Sig 1911 RCS in a trade that I figured I’d just flip, but I’m really starting to like it. It’s a Commander length barrel with an Officer height grip and it’s slightly thinner with smoothed corners. It carries nicely and since all my 1911 holsters are Commander size, it’s a nice fit. About the only thing I don’t like about the RSC is it’s tendency to eject brass straight back into my face. I’ve learned to pull the bill of my ball cap low over my glasses, so it’s not too big of a deal, but I am experimenting with different loads and I’ll try a new recoil spring.

My Smith 1911 ejected on my forehead when new. Sent it back and they adjusted or replaced extractor and good since. Maybe just an adjustment. Perhaps a local gunsmith can do it.

Yes wilson mags exclusively for range and carry but I heard good things about cmc railed mags too. Wilson offers an 8rounder for the chopped frames. I no longer use the factory mags in the picture as cartridges would somehow point vertically with heavy recoiling loads.

CMC are the Chip McCormick, right? I have some of those too, but I don't run them in my aluminum framed 1911s.
The ones I have run flawlessly, but have the steel followers.

Dan Wesson is an excellent choice. I had a Pointman .45 several years ago and wish I’d never gotten rid of it.
