My brother in MD sent me a box of eight std. mod-39-2 factory,
black plastic follower mags. He has been picking them up at shows over the years, I took four std., blue 39-2s from
Sn. 200K to 700K, And started testing each mag. All good for gun 1&2, OK on the #3 gun until mag #6. It stuck about half way in.
Removed it and tagged it. Continued test on gun #3 and #4, OK.
Gave it a rest, and tried the next day. Same results.
My conclusion: but the tagged mag in the drawer and got seven mags for a steak dinner.
Any comments welcome!

Great price on the mags. I’m sure you can adjust the problem mag.

Hello guy, agree on the price. As far as adjusting, need opinions.
Since it fits three of my 39-2s, why bother?

Personally I would try to find out if its the gun or the mag that is odd and make whichever work correctly.

I would not want a mag in use that does not fit all of same model guns equally - would hate to find out I had picked up wrong mag in the dark for a particular gun.

But then I would probably just pull the odd mag out of service and either sell it with warning or put in junk mag drawer with the no-name mags I have accumulated.

My collection of 39, 639 and 52 mags. Cigar boxes work great to store. These are the ones for my shooters. Usually have two in the box with the collector ones.

#6 sticky mag has been tagged and stowed in the broken parts drawer.
If I ever need an internal part for a mag, I know where to look. Thanks

Does it not go into the gun properly, Mike, or does it just fail to drop free as it should? If the latter, I’d push it in and pull it out a time or two and look for a shiny high spot to relieve... or I’d send it to Uncle Froggie’s Home for Unloved Magazines!

Hello Mr. Green, slide locked back, insert empty#6 mag. Goes in half way
and stops. Just for a better view, I removed the grips. I was thinking that maybe the mag was catching on the mag release. Not even near it. The
other seven mags fit perfect. I will save it for parts. Thanks

Is it possible that the notch on the mag has a burr and is hitting the bottom of the grip?
Just a thought.

Tom, I checked for burrs and any rough spots, none detected.
The thing that is perplexing is that #6 mag fits perfectly in the three other 39-2s? There must be a high spot in the #3 gun mag channel in the frame.

Who knows how many rounds were put through it.?? First thing I do with a used mag is buy a new spring from Wolff Gun Springs and go from there.


Or take a spring out of a functioning mag and exchange with the "bad" mag see if that works.

Still Running Against the Wind

Mr. Rule, excellent suggestion. I took the #6 mag apart down to parts on the bench, and an empty shell in my hand. Shell got stuck in gun.
I have not gotten to the range yet to test feed and function. Springs
will be replaced as needed.

Having just acquired my first M39-2 that came with 2 OE S&W mags, did just order three (3) ProMag magazines for what I thought was a fair price.
Haven't arrived yet - we'll see how well they work.

Good job, you're learning!

Just rec. two nice 39-2 mags from a member. Nice shape and both fit all four guns. Got them for a local club member that needed some extra OEM mags for his 39-2s. Good deal from jimbo c in TX.
