I'm thinking of adding another .40 and would like to hear some opinions.

I have a full-size M&P in my nightstand. I have a Beretta PX4 compact to carry. And I have a .40 BHP to go with my 9mm BHP. Plse I picked up a Beretta 96 Centurion cause it was a good deal and I have a 4006TSW CHP in memory of my best friend who was a CHiP.

I don't really "need" another 40 but I really like my CS9 and 4513TSW for carry and as good as the PX4 is, I do like S&W.

So, I'm searching for a CS40 or 4013 or maybe a 4040PD. I'm not a great fan of DAO but can live with them.

But I get confused because I really like the .45 Shield (and the big M&P) and am wondering if I should go for a .40 Shield or .40 M&P compact to carry.

There's great logic in purchasing any of them, or even looking for something not S&W.

So if you were going to buy another .40 for carry...what's the best combination of shootability, value, and (yeah, money is a consideration) price, either new or (most likely) used?

(Common sense (?) says get the Shield; my heart says go for the 4013...and reality says keep what ya got and try and find more ammo at any price. Reality bites!)

Personally I am very fond of my H&K USP .40. I think the Shield is a little light for that cartridge myself, but my opinion isn't necessarily worth anything. If those listed are the two options, I would go with the 4013.

Robert: I had a USP 40 and liked it, but I made the fatal error of showing it off to my middle son....now I don't have one. And the reason I am considering the Shield in .40 is because it shoots so politely in 45acp.

I have the 4013TSW and really love it, it is also my EDC. I would recommend this if you can find one,

Just for the heck of it I googled "4013TSW for sale" (and looked in the usual auction places and online classifieds). Up popped a bunch, but Gander Mountain had one for $450. That seemed like a good price (average confirmed sale price on a big auction site was $700 but those had cases and papers); the gun looked good; I understand Gander Mountain is a reputable company; and I know I am taking a bit of a chance it isn't a total wreck and I doubt I'll be getting all the stuff...but. It comes with one mag but I have a bunch of mags for my 4006TSW and those should fit, but probably need a spacer.

I passed on one of these about 6 months ago, local guy was asking $375 and I've been kicking myself since then. I figured $75 more, in this fevered gun-buying time, wasn't too outrageous. And hey, it's only money!

It seems like this question has been coming up quite regularly lately. Maybe I’m not the only one that has discovered the wonderful S&W .40 3rd Gen, (and PC,) offerings that years ago I had dismissed as irrelevant and useless .

A 4040PD is another viable option and the Chiefs Special in .40 should be mentioned also.

If I didn’t have to start over here I’d be 4TGUY. (NOT).

I've never been a big .40 fan, I found a 40 Shield at a great price though and took a chance on it and really enjoyed it.
Sounds like you found a great pistol but I would still get a Shield in 40 sometime.

Just to weigh in, I have three .40's - H&K USPC, Springfield XD and a Glock 20 with both 10mm and 40 S&W barrels. I also had a 4006 which I sold several years ago, since I seem to shoot the plastic fantastic pistols more better.

Maybe take a look at the 4006 TSW model. They are (or were) I think given a bit more attention to fitting during construction. I have one and it is a very accurate pistol.

Get a CHP 4006TSW, you wont regret it.

I bought my first Glock40, Model 23. Most reliable pistol I had at the time.

It was ugly and soul less to me and I treated it like a red headed sister and kept it wedged between my seat and console where it disappeared.

It saved my butt by having it in the cruiser all the time. Nice to have a pistol in each hand when covering 2 suspects. Who would have thought?

I have a Springfield XDm Compact 3.8 in .40. I’ve had it for a long time and it has been flawless. I like having the ability to use a flush magazine for carry and an extended magazine for the night stand. The extended mag also makes it feel like a full sized gun at the range. Also has a Picatinny rail. Good luck with your decision!

Agreed. I'm not a huge. 40 guy, I have the CHP 4006TSW and a SIG 229.

I'd take the Smith over the SIG hands down.

I got my 4006TSW from CDNN and was very happy with it.

I have an M&P40 full size and a Shield 40. Love them both. And I have 9mm and 357 barrels to go along. So with one firearm, I can shoot 3 different rounds. I believe you can do same with Glock but I prefer the S&W. I did make a mistake recently by passing on a 4013 awhile back. Seller would not budge 5 cents and I was stubborn as well - live and learn.

This would be what I would look at too, considering what you already have.
Magazines are still not bad through GB, I purchased 4 of them a few months ago when I got me a NOS 4013TSW.

It's a very nice handgun.

The 45ACP is a low pressure load while the 40 S&W is a high pressure load, shooting a 185 grain bullet in 45ACP and a 180 grain bullet in 40 S&W would seem to be the same in terms of felt recoil but they are two different animals. I have Shields in 40 S&W, 45ACP and 9mm. I use a mild powder to control the 40's famous "snap". The Shield in 40 S&W is very manageable with a 'mild' powder. I generally use IMR 700-X as my go to 'mild' powder.

(For the record, I have several 40 S&W guns, the compact carry guns are namely the M&P Shield, Springfield XD Mod 2 Subcompact and the Ruger SR40C. My medium sized carry guns in 40S&W are the Tristar C100 (CZ75 compact clone) and Taurus PT940. The full sized carry guns in 40S&W are the Ruger SR40 and Taurus PT101. All are chambered with Speer 180 grain Gold Dot 180 JHPs with IMR 700-x.)
