My S&W 39-2
I bought this Model 39-2 at a very good price. It is in excellent condition and looked like it was fired very little if any at all. This is what the right side looks like. Why would someone do this to a gun? The takedown lever pushes out with ease with the finger.

Perhaps not the original takedown lever?

Yeah, that’s a cringe moment there. Suppose it would look a little better cleaned up a bit. I also cannot quite see why that would happen or have been done on purpose.

Looks like someone used a punch to take it apart. I know some of them are a little stiff trying to take that out however, the back of a plastic screwdriver with a slight tap would do it. That's a shame for that pistol.

Someone banged the heck out of it. Dang shame. I would probably use a black magic marker to make it look a little better. That's why you got it at such a "very good price". Won't affect functionality so shoot and enjoy it!!!

My guess is that if the takedown lever pushes out that easily, perhaps someone tried to stake around it with a punch to move metal around and tighten it up. There is no end to how idiots can bodge something up.
I've seen an electrical wall switch used for the lights on a motorcycle, and have pulled a wood screw out of a motorcycle I was restoring.

My guess would be that Bubba did not know how to properly disassemble your 39-2 and tried to use a punch or big nail and hammer to knock out the slide stop pin. Also note the dings along the bottom edge of the slide just above the slide stop pin.

Something odd about the pic. There are no marks on the end of the pin.
Appears the peening was done with the pin removed. Perhaps in an
attempt to tighten up the hole? Im sure the gun shoots fine but it
would bug the Bejusus out of me. Remedy? I dont see one that would return it to original.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I thought it was odd also. The place I buy most of my stuff has another 39 for $350. I might just buy it. He purchased hundreds of guns from a guy’s collection that passed away. That guy went everywhere buying guns and stashing them never shooting one.

Howard, had a late idea. If it bugs you think about this,
Remove the pin and slide. Where the hole is and the peening misdeed has been done, envision a small circular crater, like the later four digit model number guns have. Just a thought. You would have a customized mod-39.

What do I do with the silver color? A sharpie marker? It is alloy. It doesn’t bug me. I dropped a new engraved 1911 from standard mfrg the day I brought it home. Fell out of my truck to the concrete!

Birchwood Casey makes a chemical product called “AlumaBlack” that can help color the bare metal. It is somewhat permanent, and you will have to re-apply. It isn’t expensive and it is easy to work with and a bottle of it goes a long, long way.
I like Mike’s idea of dishing the hole a bit. It seems like almost anything would be better than what is shown.

What does the inside of the slide look like on the left side? Maybe tried to pound out the slide stop with the slide fully forward?

Thanks I Forgot all about AlumaBlack. I used it almost 40 years ago. Maybe it will be worth twice as much being a customized gun! I never even looked at the right side when I purchased it. I looked at the left side and the feed ramp area. It looked new at those points. Thanks all

Inside of the slide and frame look great. No marks on the slide stop lever or the outside face of it sticking out on the right side when assembled. I have the correct bits to dish out the outer face of the hole being a jade, ivory carver, silver, and goldsmith.

It is possible that Bubba so damaged the slide stop pin that it had to be replaced. That would explain the lack of damage to the head of the pin.

I think we will have to enter this 39-2 into the book of unsolved
mysteries.

You could put it in a plain, brown box and send it to me for... uhhhhh... "disposal".

Howard, dont give up yet. Try the dishing idea I proposed.
The condition of the gun is not your fault. You cant make it any worse than it already is. Just do the dishing a little at a time and apply some darkening agent.
