M&P 9 or 5906?
I am constantly watching local sites for interesting guns. I already own 6 nine mm handguns. Four Glocks and three HK's. There are a couple of Smiths that I have found. One is a 5906 and the other is an M&P 9.
They are both in similar condition and price. The 5906 comes with 5 mags and the M&P two. I have always liked the stainless Smith autos. I own a 4566 and a CHP 4006. I used a M&P 40 at work for about 3 years before my employer switched to a FN 9 mm.
Any issues with either gun such as finding mags etc?

I don't own either. For me the 5906 is the more interesting of the two. However from your post you are pretty well stocked on the modern tactical and vintage police pistols! So flip a coin!!

Get the 5906. You already have two of it's siblings, so you are familiar with the 3rd gen platform.

You already have 4 Glocks chambered in 9x19, so you are well prepared for the zombie apocalypse. The M&P 9, as fine of a pistol as it is, is a current production model and I don't see S&W halting production any time soon. The Model 5906 is long out of production and it is highly unlikely to ever re-enter production, there simply is not enough demand from distributors or government agencies. I'd get the Model 5906.

If it's going to be a range gun, I'd go with the 5906. If it was a duty gun, I'd go with the M&P.
Of course, as you usually hear around here, Buy both.

I own both. I hadn’t handled a 5609 until earlier this year. I liked everything about it and I knew I wanted one. I was lucky enough to win the bid on one on Gunbroker before the prices on all firearms went up. I still have my M&P9 2.0 in my nightstand, but my 5609 is probably my favorite pistol and I have a few. The grip, trigger, stainless steel, and character puts it on top. How much are they asking for the two pistols? If the price was right, I’d buy both. Like others have said though, you’ll be able to buy M&Ps for a long time. That’s not true with a 5906.

As you can tell by my avatar I have one of each. I'd go with the 5906 in a heartbeat.

My answer is both but the M&P9 is easier to find and will be available longer.

I'd say there's no question, the 5906 is the one. As was said, magazines can still be found, and the M&Ps are all over the place while the 5906s are gradually disappearing. I picked one up from another cop when I was still working for $280.
Good luck with your choice!

It depends on what you like and what role the pistol will play. If they are just range toys then it’s not really relevant, but if you plan to carry then the M&P is a lot lighter. For a home defense use, the M&P has a rail for a weapon light while the 5906 doesn’t unless you get a TSW model. If you like to modify and improve your pistol, then M&P has more options for sights, and you can install an Alex trigger to get a really nice trigger pull, and even get a match grade barrel if you like. The biggest difference is going to be the action - as you know, 5906 is da/sa and M&P is striker fired. If you want the consistent trigger pull, M&P all the way. If you feel safer with the heavy da first shot, then 5906 wins.
Like many on here, I have an M&P (compact 2.0 3.6 inch barrel) and 5906 (TSW). I like both of them a lot. If you can only have one, it’s really a matter of what you want and what you’re looking for. Either is a fine choice.

Hands down 5906, they haven't been made in forever. M&P line can be found everywhere easily.

Go with the 5906, a 9mm would round out the .40S&W and .45acp 3rd Gens you already have.
Plus.. you mentioned that already have 4 Glocks, why add another "Glock like" poly pistol like the M&P.
And as others have said, M&P's will still be available down the road.
