Pawn Shop Score 3906? Mag
Found this one in the mag box at a pawn shop I visit frequently, haven't been in a month or so. Got it for $13+tax.
First time I have seen one of these in stainless with a metal mag bottom. All of the 39 mags were blued and one I think is NP, but not sure and the 3906 mags all had plastic bottoms.

Maybe it’s a 639 magazine?

All of these were pawn shop finds in the last 2 years. I paid $15 or less for each one. Some I got as cheap as $8. Gotta hit the shops and dig. Oh, yeah, there were 2 pro-mag 39 mags that I didn't get a pic of. Got them for $10 and added a new spring and red follower to one. Both shot flawless with the test at the range. The 2 at the top left had the finish mostly gone. I cleaned off the corrosion and re-blued them. They turned out quite nice.

Could be, sure looks like it doesn't it? I don't know the mag vintage very well yet. Just know it fits in my 3913 and 908 sticking out a bit.

Finding these S&W mags at pawn shops is like an Easter egg hunt. When you find one, it is like you found the prize egg. I get all giddy.

IIRC, the 3906 magazines used the same red follower as the 3913/14/53/54 and CS9 magazines.
Since that has a black follower and metal base, it's like to be a 2nd Gen magazine.
Doesn't matter much since it should work fine in a 3904/6.

Yes and No, the magazine body is too short.

Its definitely a 639 mag. The 3906 mags had a thicker, black plastic floorplate.

I bought one of the 3906 mags and added a modified Pachmyar spacer for my 3913 backup mag. Only bought 1, but now have several 39 series mags that will hold 9 rounds also.
Since followers and mag springs were cheap, I have replaced most of them with the new red follower and a new factory spring.
I haven't loaded up rounds in the new mag yet, but am betting if I put a red follower in it will hold 9 rounds (if not with the black one), the other 39 mags have held 9 with the red follower that I have tested.
It does seem like the metal bottom mags are slightly shorter than the plastic bottom mags, but will still hold 9 rounds if the proper guts are installed.

So you are saying all of the metal bottom 39 series mags I have will not fit in a 3906? That I didn't know, I assumed they would fit.

Just tried, it will only hold 8 rounds with the black follower and spring. The tail on the black follower is longer than the red one and so is the spring. I just installed the newer design red follower and spring and it easily accepts 9 rounds. Seems to be even better if you put in the new plastic flat mag bottom catch plate also. The factory metal one takes up a tad more mag space.
I am sure one could cut the longer tail off the black follower and it would work, but the follower doesn't work too good with the newer mag springs.

It's a Model 639 magazine.

It looks just like my two original 639 mags and I would pay what you did in a New York nanosecond!

Up until I started frequenting this forum, I only looked for those that I needed. Now I am looking for any 3rd gen mags or newer if I run across them. Figure I can help a brother out on here if I score a deal on one I can't use and or keep until I find the gun to fit the magazine...

Rosewood, I’m not sure whether it will play well with your 3906, but if it won’t, by all means drop me a PM and I’ll happily adopt it at Uncle Froggie’s Home for Wayward Mags. I stand to be corrected, but I believe that variant was only “issued” with 639s. Of course, they have wandered out into other applications in the intervening 30+ years.

I don't have one yet... I only have a 3913 and 908 which they work fine in.

If you’re looking for a perfect gun for this magazine, check out this thread;
Generation 2.5
This thread tracks my “adventures” with the Gen 2 version of the S&W semi-auto nines. From other threads on the subject, it sounds like the guns themselves are the easy part... it’s the mags that are getting hard to find!

Given the production numbers, I think you have a far better chance of finding a Model 639 than you do finding a Model 3906. I also think that a 639 magazine would look at home in a nickel plated 39, 39-2, 439 or 539.

Hit gun stores in Roanoke VA this last weekend on a visit up there. Picked up 2 pinky extension 3913 mags, non-pinky 3913 mag and a 3906 mag. Ended up paying $25 a piece for them. Wasn't a super score, but when they have gotten hard to find elsewhere, not a bad deal to pickup some spares.
One store had a 3913 TSW magazine (the short one) still in the wrapper and there was one 3906 mag left at the other store.
One store had a slew of 10 round 4006 magazines.

Bought a Universal M1carbine from a guy at a big flea market Oct. 1st. The guy said since I bought the rifle that I could have something free from his grab box. I grabbed a stainless magazine and put it in my pocket. The box was on the ground so I didn’t pay any attention what it was. Checked it when I got home and it was a 3906 mag. Red follower. Lucky me, now I have 3 mags for my 3906.

I wasn't looking too hard not too long ago, but with all the discussion of the 3rd mags being so hard to find, I am grabbing them up at every store where I find them with a good price. They are still out there, you just have to look deep in those boxes. Many of the gun store folks don't know what they have, especially the younger guys.
