Default Model 41 Find

I found a Model 41 in decent shape yesterday, no box with one extra mag. I have $500.00 in it but the tag price was $800.00. I used "trade fodder" to acquire it.

Serial# A582266 which according to a chart someone posted puts it around 1979ish. Correct me if i'm wrong.

I was lucky in one respect. I bought a box of 40 holsters a few weeks back and there was a S&W branded holster for a Model 41 in the lot. Not that I think i will be carrying it afield but it's nice to have.

The dates about right . Mine is A5665**, and mine is late 1978-79 . If it's like mine , it'll shoot great . I held off shooting mine because it was NIB , but I finally caved . And yes , they shoot as good as everyone says , at least the older ones do . You're going to be happy .

I had one probably 20 years ago that I traded-off for a 6.75" High Standard Supermatic Tournament 107 Military package so I am familiar with the way they shoot but the H-S shoots so well I never really missed it thinking I could always pick-up another by and by.

Well I don't think I've seen one "out in the wild" for much under 1K since. What with the current "panic" and my trade fodder suddenly being worth a lot more than normal I figured I'd jump on this one.

I’d date your model 41 to 1980, most likely in the summer of 80. It’s difficult to date them precisely because S&W did not ship in numerical number order. For example, A600256 was shipped in Jan 80 but the much lowered numbered A576990 was shipped 8 months later in Sep 1980.

You have a great pistol and congratulations on your find. I hope that you enjoy your M41 as much as I do mine!

Nice score! Might I suggest acquiring a few more vintage magazines. The vintage mag's are more expensive but they are much better quality and they actually work. Good shooting!

I have two (4.50" and 6") 422s and they use the same mags and I have several extras for them. In fact of the two mags i got with the pistol only one is a vintage 41 mag, the other fits it and the 422.

I know where I can get a few more that are vintage 41 mags as they won't work with the 422. I'll pick-up those next week.

Other than the mag release cut they are the same mag, no difference in quality.

Since it did not have a box I went ahead and made me a fitted storage case for it that holds the pistol, two spare mags, a box of ammo, and the holster in the lid compartment.

The case is a nice idea. Would the foam or liner be prone to holding moisture? I would hate to see your nice 41 get rusty due to that. Maybe throw in some desiccant packs to be safe.

Nah, I've made many such cases and all the guns I have in them are just fine. Some have been in the same type of cases I have made for 15 years or better.

I use closed-cell foam that does not attract/hold moisture like the open-cell foam used in a lot of pistol cases.

I cut them from industrial closed-cell interlocking work station floor pads. They are also oil/chemical resistant.

Smile The Great S&W Mdl 41 22lr Pistol

Somehow I missed this great thread when it was first posted,
so I'll contribute today...

Wow! I had to go check on my S&W 41 22lr to make sure it wasn't stolen.
Your S&W 41 5"Bbl 22lr looks like mine. There's something about that
era of Model 41's 22lr that makes it recognizable to others. It's the Bluing,
Sights, Grips, Barrel length, I don't know.

My S&W Model 41 5"Bbl 22lr has been a very accurate Pistol. I enjoy
shooting it. My SN is A7155XX and what I was told by a well respected
S&W Enthusiast it was made in 1979.

After reading this Thread I wonder about 1979 now?

I was very very fortunate and found it a great deal at $375. Unfortunately
it had no Box, no accoutrements, and only one Magazine.

Thank you for Sharing and the Pictures.

The Best to you and your Endeavors.

By ALL means, get all the vintage mags you can snag!!

Mine is a 1990 5 1/2" HB. Not quite as nicely finished, but before the MIM and laser engraving and just being assembled rather than hand fitted. It has run like a top since day 1. I got it in 1991 in a straight up trade for a 1920s Colt ACE that would just not run and I wanted a shooter, not a safe queen. Did hang on to 2 of the original mags because I knew another ACE would be in the future, a Series 70 SM ACE about 10 years later, that runs like a scalded dog.

This was before we had a computer by a couple of years, but, soon after we did, I found RFC and the M41 sub forum.

That's where I first started hearing complaints about the "new" mags that S&W was putting out that listed 2 new pistols besides the 422 and 41 'for use in' on the back (the 622 and 2206 IIRC), but the ones for the 422 and 41, worked perfectly. These were still (relatively), easy to find as everyone seemed to want the new production and I liked to have at least 5 so I could load a whole box at once at home rather than at the range. Ended up with 14, 10 for the range and 4 still in the blister packs before I stopped looking. LOL, think I have enough!

Don't give up on that field holster too quick! Some of the most fun I've had is woods walking with the 41 in a Bianchi holster marked for M41. There is a bit of bluing loss on the muzzle end (form fitted), but being able to tote it around outweighs a little finish loss for me. YMMV

Above all, enjoy your M41!

Rob

I usually carry a rather tired (looks-wise) 6" S&W Model 17 .22 when out and about in the woods.

It spent much of it's life in a US Embassy in South America before being repatriated back to the US.

It was sort of a "community" revolver that officially "did not exist" that personnel would grab along with its old Bucheimer holster. Consequently it was not cared for very well. Still works/shoots great though.

That was a good deal! 5-1/2" heavy barrels are $1,000-$1,400 around here.

Ever sold any of those cases? From what I can see they are nicely made.

Well I finally got around to looking for those Model 41 mags this past Saturday. I found two 41 mags and another 422/41 mag. I also found a set of Model 41 stocks like those that are on the pistol I bought.

They must have been replacements as they had two wood fiber spacers that the screws went through.

I traded a 870 Police butt-stock for them that I gave $10.00 for at the flea market so I did OK.

You made a great deal for today's market. Enjoy it. The older 41's are really great shooters with exceptional craftsmanship.

Default Yup, they're special!

Yup, they're special but not top tier precision pistols.
