Model 46 Collection
Hi
I finally found the missing piece to my model 46 collection. I have been looking for the 5.5 inch heavy barrel model for some time now.
I had to pay a pretty penny for it but I guess it is worth it as they only made 500 of them.
Does anyone know if there are any models other then the 5 inch field barrel model, the 5.5 inch heavy barrel and the 7 inch barrel?
Any info on these matters would be much appreciated.
Thanks Graydog

These are the only ones I know of but then I’m not a real authority on the M46.
The M46 barrels were $16.50 for either the 7” or 5” effective on the January 1, 1960 price list. That’s $145.09 in today’s inflation adjusted dollars. I expect you paid a bit more! Congratulations on your new barrel.

I was not aware they made the Field Barrel for a Mod 46. I know they were available as an accessory for either, but thought were all in a Mod 41 blue and not a 46 matte.

The Model 46 was sold in three standard configurations, 7", 5.5" and 5". Both the 5" and 7" barrels will have a smooth top on the barrel vs. grooved as a model 41 barrel. There were 500 5.5", 1000 5" and 2500 7" made.
There are variations within these such as square vs. rounded cut slide along with guns which are Military marked. There is also rumored to be 22 Short kits sold and fitted to Model 46's.
Nice work finding the trifecta! How about some pictures?

.22 short kit added to the 46
Hi
Here is something that most people will never have seen. This is the .22 short kit added to my 7 inch model 46.
In the third picture you can see how the mag has the added spacer so only shorts can be loaded in it.

Great addition. The 5.5 heavy barrel has eluded me.
I actually have two model 46s with short kits and a Smith & Wesson blue two piece box with factory printed "model 46" ".22 short" on the end. I will see if I can get photos for you.

Very Nice pistols.
Were 46s also sold with black stocks?

Black-no,
They came with nylon grips that were brown and later pistols came with standard Model 41 wood stocks.

What do the top of those 5 inch barrels look like? Better yet, a photo would help.
