Couldn't resist the siren song of this Model 645
Through a convoluted series of trades and sales I wound up with store credit at a local place that was eating a figurative hole in my pocket. Today this hunk of steel appeared in the case, and went home with me.
It came with four mags and nothing else. I've had a 4506 before, and I liked it, but I traded it off for a shiny hat or something now forgotten. I'm glad I found this 2nd generation near replacement.
I can't wait to shoot it. Luckily I have a good stash of .45 ammo.
Any other fans?

Color me oh so green with envy!
I'm channeling back to Sonny Crocket (Miami Vice) when he toted one - I think between the times he carried a Sig P-220 and then the Bren 10. I've never had any luck with S&W semiauto handguns - at least those chambered in 9mm - it took me a while to figure out that they just don't fit my hands, but I've always wanted to try one of the S&W semiautos chambered in .45ACP. When I was younger, I was a huge Colt Government Model .45ACP fan. Unfortunately, a wrist injury left me no longer able to shoot the Colt as my wrist would unlock under recoil. I think a 645 would worth trying it again.
Best of luck with yours - I think you made a great acquisition.
Regards,
Dave

Good score on the 645. A Friend owns one I’ve shot a good bit. It was very reliable and accurate. He carried it in uniform as a Deputy Sheriff.

Very nice! That giant philips screw holding the safety on just looks off, though.

Nice snag!
I'm having fun with mine shooting my non-spendy handloads.

There's only one problem with a 645 . It leads to a 745 , then a 945 , and if you're lucky an 845 . What didn't cost you much could cost you a lot in the long run . Nice looking 645 , plus you got 2 all metal mags . Happy shooting , and give us a range report .

Too funny but too true. Not necessarily in that order though.
Very nice 645 example “sigp220.45”. You’re gonna like it.

Congratulations on picking up a really nice Model 645. Keep the screw on the safety tight, they developed a reputation for loosening and departing during firing.

I have one that I converted to 45 Super.
Not as clean as yours though. And mine has the curved back strap. I much prefer the straight backstrap like on yours. That is what I have on all of my other third gen guns.

Yes I believe that is why in later iterations they went to a hex head screw. The even more modern 4506 series used a detent/ dovetail configuration to fasten the safety. I own both and both are great shooters. They feed anything to include empty cases flawlessly 😎

Nice catch.

Yes, you are right. For some reason to me, the guns look a whole lot better with wooden grips. The black "plastic" factory grips just don't make it look "cool."

Very nice find. I do not think that I have seen one in ages. I do not see many reasonably priced second and third gens for sale at all lately.

That's a great looking 645. Just a reminder....if (when) you loose the screw off of the ambi side of the safety, Everbilt (and others) makes an 8x32 crowned hex screw that works great on these assemblies. To me, this screw looks better than the OEM Phillips version.
In this particular assembly, removable type thread locker is your friend. The screws have a tendency to work loose.

The 645 was my very first .45 way back when, but I was disappointed with the quality control and traded it in on an early 4506 when they first came out. I still have that pistol to this day.
It's funny but I don't seem to remember my 645 having the red insert on the front sight - but every picture on this thread so far has it so it must be my memory. I don't see color in my mind's eye so that could be the reason.
Have fun with it!

Mine is a soft shooting, accurate pistol. The trigger is much nicer then some other 2nd and 3rd gen. pistols I've shot.
Those extra mags are getting expensive, you got a great deal getting some extras.
Enjoy it.

Actually, some came with the “Phillip” and some came with a hex head screw as I recall.

I bought my 645 when they first came out. Wonderful gun, and totally reliable - will even feed empty cases (manually, of course).
There is just one little problem. On the right side safety lever, there is a Phillips-head screw. Unscrew it. Apply a drop of blue LocTite to the screw threads. Screw it back in. Problem fixed.

Your 645 looks fantastic. AND you got 4 mags to boot. I just bought a 645 but it only came with one mag and a very loose right safety screw. I'll probably never shoot it and will leave it to my kids. I just wanted one and found one at a reasonable (considering the virus pricing) price.
I wish you good shooting!

Did someone say 6450? Yeah, it's a "transitional" pistol. A 3rd generation frame with a 2nd generation slide. Mine had the red ramp front sight removed and replaced with a proper white dot and it wears Hogue grips over the standard Delrin grips from Smith. She's a beauty to shoot too!
It's a shame they didn't make more of them but I suspect they were just using up parts from the leftover 2nd generation parts bin. Mine is number 27.

I have a 645, and like it very much. Then I handled a 4506-1 and liked it even better. So, now have both. They are set up for different uses. Put adjustable rear sight on 645 and Tritium sights on 4506-1. Do not think I will ever get rid of either.
