Default S&W 4513TSW Worth Having?

Saw a 4513TSW at a local gunshow today, around 500 bucks. Seems in very good shape but not excellent. One mag, no box, etc. Worth it?

Worth it!! 6 round mag or 7 round? Rail or no? If you are a Gen III fanatic this is one of 'them.'
If you pass you'll get 20 P/M's asking you to get them in touch with them.....

Well I feel that a 4513TSW is worth having but I am more than biased. Regardless of the type, (6rnd pre-rail or 7rnd railed or not,) they are great pistols.

At @ $500.00 in the condition stated it might be on high side price wise but that’s just my opinion.

My 4516-2 was starting to get a bit heavy after a long day so I replaced it with a 6rnd 4513TSW. (For carry that is, I still have the 4516 of course.) I’ve got a few .45’s but my 4513TSW’s are perfect for me.

[I bought my 4513 last summer and paid a little more than $500 but it came with 3 mags....."worth it?"....to me it was then and even more so now since it has become an every range day gun ......and very good M457's are bringing "around" $500 right now and that trend ain't gonna slow down with the way the winds have started to blow... If it is the pre-rail 6 round variant mags can be a little scarce but they are out there.........Take "18's" advice and if you don't love it you won't have any trouble turning it around these parts

Having owned, at various times, a 4506, 4566, 4566TSW, 4513TSW, 457, and Shorty 45, I feel confident saying that if you are interested in a 45ACP Third Gen pistol, the 4513TSW is the first one you should own.

I fully enjoyed all of the models listed above, and they were all completely reliable and excellent values. The 4513TSW -- especially at the price point you are looking at -- is a great way to dip a toe into these waters. I venture to say that if you buy it, you will be impressed and will want to try the other models depending on whether you want to go larger, more expensive, or value line. And even if you just decide to keep your stable to one Third Gen 45, you'll never regret buying the 4513TSW.

Let's just call this an endorsement.

Like others have opined, the 4513TSW is an excellent compact, lightweight .45 pistol.

This is an old pic of a couple of them. The top one is an early one I ordered when they were first released, and the bottom one is a late production model ('06?) I carried as an issued pistol in my plainclothes assignment.

FWIW, my older model 4513TSW wears some Hogue grip stocks in that pic, I modified to fit the cutaway grip frame. Hogue never made their rubber grips to fit the original 4513TSW compact. Only the later version with the standard length grip frame (7rd mag).

My early one has been used a lot, and I used the issued model for a fair amount of range training.

This is a pic of my issued 4513TSW (left) in an issued Hume H726 semi-break front holster, and my older 3913 (right) in an older version of the same Hume holster, which I used for an earlier issued 6906 and my 3913. You can see how the thicker and longer slide do add some size to the 4513.

When we were told we'd be able to buy an issued pistol, though, as they were being phased out for M&P's, I traded the 45113TSW for a 3913TSW. I subsequently bought that 3913TSW. Why pass on the newer 4513TSW? Well, I already owned a CS45S and that early model 4513TSW, but I only owned a standard 3913 and wanted to add a late production TSW version.

Wish I'd known those D Hume H726 holsters existed back in the day(Pre-internet) like the look better than the OWB Bianchi 19L I've got/used for my 3913. See they're still available for Beretta 92s and Sig 220s.

I had a 4516 that was too heavy IMO for all day CC.... got a 6+1 4513 did the Hogue grip mod for it.... loved it but in 1993 (?) couldn't find extra 6rd mags for it in the Burgh....... traded it for a Sig 245 which I still have with a bunch of mags......

They're still available for a number of current production pistols. I haven't seen them offered for S&W 3rd gen's for the last 10+ years.
H726-BELT HOLSTER [H726] - $82.90 : Don Hume Leathergoods, Simply the Best!

We ordered them for 5 different TSW models (with rails) back in the mid/late 2000's, but our was a decent size agency order.

My regret is that I didn't discover them until after they'd discontinued making them for revolvers. That would've made an outstanding fast off-duty holster for my issued 686 and personally-owned Service-Six 4" guns, and my recently acquired 3" 65.

One time when I called and placed an order many years ago, I was told that it would be delayed for several weeks because they were having to train new leather workers to make that holster.

They made some revisions over time, like going from the tunnel belt loops to the reinforced belt slots.

I've still got a few of them for various pistols, including both non-railed/railed, and square & round trigger guard S&W's. This is a few of them for the 3rd gen's. I have others not shown (Ruger KP90DC, Colt Commander, to list a couple off the top of my head). I still have one new-in-package black 726 for a round trigger guard 3913, which I've never gotten around to using.

The nice thing about the 726 is that the muzzle clears the front cut FAST, because of both the spring-loaded front cut and the short distance the muzzle has to lift to clear. It's not only a fast presentation, but it's kind on aging shoulders. Not so much UP on the Elbow Up (EU/ED, or Elbow Up & Elbow Down draw).

I've surprised a few suspects now and again in my plain clothes days. One day when a suspect was drawing a little pistol on my partner, my partner later claimed that his 726 was the fastest holster he'd ever carried, in either uniform or plainclothes.

If you ever decide to part with the one for the 3913 let me know!! Retired at the cabin I'm carrying more OWB on walks/hikes/ATV riding and I like the thumb snap retention holsters of my youth!!!

Drives me nuts....... the stuff we never knew about prior to internet searches!!! Just picked from what was on the rack at LGSs or Cop shops..... though I did find milt Sparks in the mid-80s.

They are great guns. I use a home made flush fitting 6 round mag in the gun, plus a 4506 mag with a sleeve for a reload. Totally perfect for carry.

Really only barely bigger than a 3913.
I carry the 3913 in the summer and the 4513 in winter, when the “hide of the bad guys is a bit thicker”
As you can see, the 4513 (Recon 45 in this case) is only 3.5 ounces heavier than the 3913. Each with full mags. 7 rounds of 147 grain 9mm in the 3913 and six rounds of 230 grain .45 in the Recon.

Hey guys. Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate all your input and thoughts in the matter. It was a rail version 4513. I passed on it though for two reasons: One, upon much closer inspection, I downgraded the condition from very good to merely good-plus. The abrasions to the frame around the trigger guard didn't catch my notice till I went back. Two, upon returning to the gunshow last Sunday, the price on said 4513 magically increased to 700-bucks. Definite pass on that. I imagine its the times we're in right now. I didn't call out the dealer for the price increase, its his stuff and he sells it accordingly. However, the practice of gouging right now among dealers is truly beyond reason and I reflect on these people as less than scrupulous.

I bought one of these new, and a new CS 45. I carry the CS 45, and keep the 4513TSW by the bed. It is a tad heavier than the CS 45, but still is a great alloy frame carry pistol.

Don't forget the 4536. I paid $550 for mine about 10 years ago and I was more than willing to do so.

Follow up. Its an odd karma as today I won a bid for a 4516-2 with one correct mag in very-good-plus to excellent condition on GB for $450. I wanted the -2 version as it had the minor issues factory corrected that were on the no-dash and the -1. We'll see what happens when it gets here. Usually 4516's don't go for less than $500 in today's market so I'm wondering if I may have bought a pig-in-a-poke. I love resurrecting vintage S&W autos that have had hard lives. The 5967 I have turned out to be a honey even though it was a murder gun caked in human blood when I got it from the police auction.

I won the bid on my 4513 in May of this year for $500. It's a sweet shooting handgun. Very compact and accurate, but also comfortable to shoot. I find it very controllable even when rapid shooting. It's a keeper and if you should ever come across another one priced at $500 I say go for it. I also own a 4516-1 and a 4586 which are also keepers. They're great pistols.
