Minutia on 39s
For the 9mm semi automatic pistol fans. I know there are only a few of us. Just a few facts I have dug out of my notes, so its time to share.
1. Sn. 1001 shipped Nov.15, 1954 to the factory and presented to Mr. Austin, sales manager. This is the first commercially released 9mm.
2. Sn 2623 and 2624. These two are the highest numbered 9mm that have surfaced. Both shipped on Nov. 15, 1957. 2623 went to New Jersey and 2624 went to Alaska.
3. The first marked mod-39, not a clue.
4. The last marked mod-39, not a clue.
5. The first marked mod39-2, un-clear. Translon period.
6. The last 39-2. A747148 was shipped Feb. 15, 1983 to Costa Rica.

Thanks, Mike. These numbers give some baseline data to make some sense out of the SNs out there. They should be very useful to have available.

The Model 39 marked pistols overlap with their predecessors. The same is true of Model 39 and Model 39-2 pistols. The guns weren't shipped in strict serial number sequence and features are mixed in some cases. So designations of "first" and "last" really don't have much meaning, but it makes for interesting collecting goals.

Kevin, very true, agree. But, there is a cloudy period point of transition.
Could have lasted months till the older parts were exhausted.

Model 39s:
My most memory of a Model 39 was in the 1970s era.
We were serving an arrest warrent on a known drug dealer.
Our squad had two "Cowboys" who big thing was bursting though doors during a bust or serving a warrent. These guys always were armed with shotguns.
As we assumed our appointed positions, the two cowboys did their "Thing" and burst threw the front door with shotguns and vests.
The BG inside sitting in a chair drew a Model 39, went to one knee and shot both cowboys in the groins !
The BG knew about the vests and where they did not cover.
Afterwards vests were purchased with groin protecters.
