We got a CHP 4006TSW with the integral rail in today at the range. Our distributor had a few, so we got one for the rental counter.

I loaded up 5 rounds and took it out for a test drive. I sold all my 40s back in 2007, to feed the divorce attorney and hadn't shot one since. Gun felt great in the hand.

We ran a 2 inch circle target out to the 10 yard line. Shooting WWB 165 grain. My turn shooting it I got all 5 rounds into the center of the 2 inch circle. GREAT TRIGGER! Really smooth in DA with a crisp let off. SA was equally crisp.

The integral rail - which I have no use for as I don't hang things on my handgun - added enough weight out front to make follow through and follow up shots a breeze. Very nice shooting gun.

I had not intended to buy any more 40s. I thinned the herd to 9s and 45s only, some time back. But I think I will keep an eye out for a clean CHP 4006TSW. It shoots too good not to. Regards 18DAI

I'm not the best shot with my CHP4006TSW tho enough, I had BMCM work mine over forged hammer/trigger new factory night sights and 13 mags hahaha they are just so cheap...

I even give her some AIWB carry time around the property walking trees down, figuring a work horse should be worked.....

That was an anomaly. .40’s are not good caliber weapons regardless. Stay away from them.

I say all this just to keep my searches “safe.” I’ve got a hard enough time trying to get just the few S&W’s I’m looking for. I sure don’t want you or anyone else re-discovering or just plain discovering the hated stepchild .40 pistols.

Yes those CHP 4006TSW’s are super fine. I agree that I also have no use for the rail, (albeit integral,) but at least it’s not a riveted on one. I guess the integral rail is tolerable. Who doesn’t like the 4566 TSW WV examples or those Melonited ones with the same integral rail?

I called Rob and got a perfect one for a great price circumventing the auction stuff. It was perfectly finished smooth and shiny inside but I did put a NOS drawbar w/new style trigger spring in. I think it made the trigger pull even better but that’s just me I’m sure.

Looks like the prices are going up for the excellent condition ones. They’re already $100.00 more than I paid not that long ago. Excellent condition ones are going to be hard to get and expensive in the near future.

I thought that 40 was a wasted caliber between 9mm and 45ACP. I saw a CHP 4006TSW on CDNN much cheaper than they are now and thought that I would get it because how many more mass S&W third gen police sales would there be? Then I shot it, and have enjoyed it since. Several friends who never had a 40 also bought 4006's after shooting mine. I was wrong about 40 caliber. Not wrong for the first or last time.

I had no .40's until I saw the 4006TSW CHP on CDNN.

It's now one of my favorite pistols.

Great action, rock solid, accurate.

Same here. I have 2 .40 Glocks and rarely shoot them. I saw a 4006TSW CHP model on gunbroker and decided to get it. I just recently got into 3rd gen S&W autos. I like the 4006TSW so much I ended up getting a second one. Great shooter. The gun is heavy enough it gets rid of the muzzle flip you experience with the lighter weight polymer frame .40’s. The 4006 CHP guns are quickly becoming my favorite.

The all-steel 4006TSW's were a nice improvement over the previous 4006's.

I never issued myself a 4006TSW because they were too heavy for me to want to carry one all day/night for my plainclothes assignment. Instead, I opted for a 4013TSW, and finished my career carrying a 4513TSW (because a friend wanted the 4013TSW, which were in short supply but high demand).

FWIW, I felt the same way when I was asked to carry one of the then-new late production 4566TSW's after our first shipment arrived. I did it, but only until someone said they really wished they could have one when our next shipment arrived ... and I cheerfully arranged to have mine issued to them.

I got a nice one from Summit when they first came out . I finally got around to having BMCM put an adjustable LPA rear sight on mine . I got it dialed in and it will shoot out the bullseye . I guess mine didn't see much use , it's really clean . Either that or there's a CHP trooper with OCD .

I bought myself a CHP 4006TSW early this year which I sadly haven't yet found an opportunity to shoot. (Thanks, COVID!)

However, I can safely say that even the duty-worn example which I received is a splendid piece of machinery. It has without a doubt the absolute best trigger of any firearm I own in both Double Action and Single Action. It's also without a doubt the most durable firearm in my collection, an absolute tank of a pistol that looks like it could shoot .40 S&W forever so long as it is adequately maintained.

So yeah, if you see one, GET IT, and don't worry about finding a "clean example" because it's Stainless Steel and will polish up good as new regardless, or be factory refinished to look quite literally as good as new.

I received one with a fair amount of holster wear, some minor scratches on the frame, a few dings on the controls, and fitted with aftermarket Hogue Rubber Grips, but she's still an absolute beauty that looks nearly flawless in photographs.



I could polish out the little marks or have it factory refinished, but frankly I dig its little imperfections because they all whisper forgotten tales of its life as a proud retired veteran of the California Highway Patrol in which it served a real officer in enforcing the law, riding inside a holster rather than sitting inside of a desk drawer or on an armory shelf.

I really like to hear about personally issued/used, (in service,) S&W 3rd Gen pistols. It just adds more to my appreciation of them. It’s interesting to me that 20 yrs later these pistols still hold the attention of so many of us. I’m glad that some of these examples are available for such reasonable prices. I’m not sure but I think some of them cost more “back then” when they were first offered.

For some odd reason, when someone says they shot a (insert make/model gun here) the first thing that runs though my mind is, "Why? Was it acting threateningly?"

I really want a 4006TSW and can't get one due to ironically, living in California. I did manage to find a really beat up trade in 5906TSW which had a pretty rough career riding in some officer's holster, and despite that it still shoots pretty nice. Hopefully these haven't reached FBI 1076 levels of mythos and price by the time I get out of this state.

Don't worry, I doubt that the CHP 4006TSW will ever come close to mythos of the FBI 1076, much less command the same price considering the sheer amount of them (over nineTHOUSAAAND) on the market. Besides, it's a .40 not a 10mm, so unless it's reputation changes in the future, it will never have the Urban Legend-esq lore of the 10mm as; "The Grizzly-slaying cartridge which rivals .41 Magnum performance with recoil that brought tears to the eyes of seasoned veteran FBI Agents!" going for it either.

Besides, consider it motivation to move to a free state where both taxes and crime are lower.

I'm thinking about qualifying with mine as a secondary weapon this week. I think it would be kinda cool to put it back into LE service. It once served on the West coast, now it can patrol the East coast salt air.

Well..qualified tonight with it. 98% day 97% night...thing shoots like a laser. Shot much better with it than my duty P320.

I'm really happy with mine, thrilled. Its my bedside gun. I carry a Glock G45, and often mess with my Colt CCS70 1911. But by the bed, I want that DA trigger, the decocker, and the Surefire X300 hanging off of it paired with a Streamlight Stinger HLED handheld (handheld for searching, weaponlight for ID'ing).

I would love another that I can customize, guzzitaco'ish.

Glad that you were able to try one of these 4006TSW CHP's out 18DAI, they are the most affordable integral-rail TSW out there, and well worth the price IMO.

Forties aren't a popular caliber anymore, but the upside is that it is probably the easiest ammo to find at a decent price, and still a very capable round. More punch than a 9mm and better penetration than a 45.

These CHP's definitely handle the recoil nicely, and there is something sweet about how the trigger breaks, it does seem smoother than my other 3rd Gens. And I love the fact that they already come with a bobbed hammer!
