3rd Gen add on rail
Has anyone experimented with adding a rail to their 3rd gen? Or maybe with one of those cheap NcStar trigger mounted rails from another gun with similar geometry?

Yes, for a while Smith & Wesson experimented by riveting add-on rails to their 3rd-Gen pistols. The results were less than ideal according to most accounts.

Do you have a certain pistol that you are maybe thinking about putting a rail on?
Of course you know this but most of the later S&W TSW offerings, in most of the calibers, had the factory rails. Depending on what you are thinking about maybe finding one of these would be the way to go. These TSW’s were and are a “step above” the regular factory pistols. They came with a rail and you couldn’t go wrong getting one if that’s what you’re wanting.
Someone else not too long ago asked this very same question, you could probably find the post in a quick search. If I remember some comments about doing this were not too supportive though.

Honestly im probably done for a while with buying other guns. But I ended up with a 411. Its great, shoots accurately. Its my bed side gun and daydream of putting a light on it, but I can equally yield my surefire at the same time.
Was just curious if could be done. Those cheap ncstar mounts, while for specific guns, peak my curiosity if a 3rd gen silhouette followed any other gun profiles the ncstar fits. Sig maybe?

Jim is correct in that the TSW models came with a rail.
There was a question on this Forum, re: Installing a rail on a 5906.
The response was disappointing because the S&W TSW rail won't fit the 5906 frame.
The good news is that (I'm pretty sure, I'll double check tomorrow) the TSW rail will fit the 411 frame.
The bad news is that S&W says they will only sell it to armorers.
The good news is that many people don't like them, and may be happy to rid themselves of one.
Personally, they don't bother me.
I'm happy to have the option.

In the end, I know i might just have appreciate it for what is and just go buy something else. But i really like that 411. Probably why I still cling onto my gen2 glock, just like it.
Regarding the TSW rail, that'd be interesting if it did. I had no idea if it would fit,, but silently hoped so. I been searching for a used one on auctions to no prevail.
