Model 39 Lowest five (5) digit serial number
Greetings everyone.
I have been a collector of Model 39 and Model 39-2 pistols for about six years now. Late bloomer, I know. I sought out the latest serial#, earliest serial#, steel, nickel, engraved, and pre 39. Thanks to all of you for answering almost all of my Model 39 /39-2 questions. Except three. 1. What is the lowest / earliest five (5) digit serial number you have seen on a Model 39? I have #30540 and the entire frame has evenly turned Plum; 2. Where does a four (4) digit serial labeled Model 39 fall in serializing the Model 39. I own #6816 labeled Model 39 and has also almost completely turned Plum. I appreciate detailed descriptions on how and why steel frames turn Plum in earlier threads; and 3. Do non-steel frames routinely turn Plum. Thanks again. PJ

I have serial number 31xxx but until you brought it up, it never occurred to me to wonder where the five digits started.
Maybe an offshoot of the same question...
What guns used the 1xxxx and the 2xxxx? For that matter, we know the 52’s used 5xxxx and 39’s used 3xxxx and 6xxxx and 8xxxx.
Were all others used for the Models 41 and 46? And maybe the Model 61 Escort?

Thank you for the comment Sevens.
Is it possible that serial numbers 3xxxx, 6xxxx, and 8xxxx were Pre-Models and serialized from the attached chart?

Does anyone own or have you ever seen a Model 39 with serial number 1xxxx, 2xxxx, 4xxxx, 5xxxx, 7xxxx, or 9xxxx?

All S&W automatic pistols were numbered in the same series but blocks were set aside for different pistols. I think all the blocks you mention were used on Model 41 pistols.

108XXX would probably be shipped in 1969, although dates can vary widely. If it has a steel frame it is way outside the known ranges.

I need to make sure it's completely steel; I am not confident to say it is. I was handed down to me (was my dad's) and it's been put away for years. I need to pull it out.
What do these go for in value in today's market (it's not for sale - sentimental value too high).

Modern autoloaders started in 1954 at 1001 ,,,,, which would include the pre 39s.
