CS9 Price Check
A local pawn shop has a blued CS9 for sale at $449. It is in original condition with the Hogue rubberized grip. Condition is blued slide, black anodized frame. Edge wear/fading on the slide and slight freckling on the left slab-side where "Chief's Special" is inscribed. Frame has slight edge wear/fading. No metal damage, gouging, or rust. One original factory magazine with thumb rest floor plate, seven-rounds. Comes with S&W box. No extra mag.
One question, is it worth it at that price?

You better get back there quick or it'll be gone.

Five or so years ago that would be a bit high. Today? Snap that bad boy up.

I agree with above. they are quite tough to find to begin with. And the blued version were not made for very long as the stainless guns. Price today is fair especially for 3rd Gens.

S&W59,
I trust you didn't get a ticket as you raced back to the pawn shop.
You did go back didn't you?

No, I'll be going down tomorrow morning and putting it on lay-away. If its gone when I get there, its gone. I'll respond here once I know how fate's wheel turned on this. I have a stainless CS45 among a good many other vintage S&W autos. This would make number... well, I have rule about not telling people much about what I have. It prevents having too much attention and attention in collecting items of value isn't a good thing.

I paid $439 a couple of years ago if that's any indication. (Condition was near ANIB.) I'd be over it like a cold sweat. It's one of my regular carry guns.

I'd jump on it at that price, but would still offer 350 first. You never know unless you ask. I enjoy the heck out of my CS40. I hope you get it, OP!

Went back to the pawn shop today. It was still there. This time I looked it over with a buyer's eye instead of a browser's. I noticed a lot more ablation to the frame down to the bare metal at the front, trigger guard. The S&W box may or may not have been the original, but some jackass tried to scrape the label off with their fingernails, destroying the make/model and serial info. Box had no paperwork. The out the door price with tax would have been just under 500-bucks. This gun did not meet my requirements to be added to my collection. Any of you wanting this, you can personal message me and I'll give you the contact info to the pawn. However, be advised, this gun has seen better days and the wear is noticeable and apparent.

I applaud your self-control S&W59, though as you pointed out the condition sounds not so good. Prices for these guns have fluctuated quite a bit since I started browsing them 6-7 years ago.
My first CS9 was a blued one purchased around 6 years ago with minor wear, no box or docs, and I wound up paying $500 all said and done. Then a few years back there was a small batch of well-worn LEO trade-ins with factory night sights that could be had for under $400. I've seen ANIB examples go for under $500 and some pretty worn examples sell for much more. These Chiefs Specials are a bit of a niche interest and sometimes folks don't know what they are worth, or the auctions just don't get the attention you think they would. Great little guns though.

Sorry to hear of the condition. Don't blame you for passing on it. Hopefully another one will come along in great shape.

I have interests in more obscure model S&W autos. A 4576, a 6926. I'll keep my eyes open on something along those lines to show up on the boards or locally. I do pawnshop crawls about once a month. Found some cool stuff doing so. S&W supposedly will reanodize Gen3 pistols but are not taking the work right now due to the wu-flu. I don't have a lot of confidence in S&W's customer service commitment right now either due to recent experience.

TercGen , that bit about prices is true . I got a NIB CS40 not long ago for around $450 . There were only a couple of bids and when I showed I was serious the others stopped bidding . You just have to look .

Today I went to a gunshow in the Atlanta area and after being disappointed that the L1A1 handguards a vendor has for sale weren't there since he forgot to pack them. No sweat, in about a month and a half he'll be at a local show and I'll get them then.
HOWEVER that is not what this is about. Among the very last tables at the gunshow, I noticed a Smith&Wesson CS9. Due to gunflation I couldn't chew him down much from the $350 price he had on it but I did manage to get them to forego sales tax. So, karma sometimes goes in my favor. Behold....

Yeah, I live in a Republican controlled state. We don't "lockdown" here.

Sometimes things just work out. That’s great that you found one and I think the price was outstanding. You are going to like it.
A couple of things that come to mind.
If you don’t like the grip, (some do I didn’t,) ask “TercGen” to make/sell you one of his outstanding pieces of practical art. If you want wood grips KSD offering are an option. They are dimensionally the same but longer in the blackstrap.
Get a “lifetime” of recoil springs. They’re $1.97 right now with 18 left. Every time I mention these deals I get in trouble whereas others can just say EBay, Jack First or Midway so you’ll have to look. It’s not two of those places.
The EKW prefix are of course the early,(er,) ones. I called S&W CS and was told my EKW CS9 shipped in 1998. Someone was wondering about the EKW’s and I replied 1998 but someone else that actually had a box with theirs corrected the date to 1999.
Maybe you already know these things.

I was planning on ordering a new recoil spring as the action seems a bit mushy at the moment. Definitely replacing the recoil spring before going to the range with it. Christmas has me a bit depleted and purchasing the CS9 didn't help either. But yeah, I found where you were mentioning it was. Seeing if there's any other bits and bobs to round out my order. Thanks for the info.
